- Vancouver bctv news report with Tony Parsons from 1988.Interview with Murray "Cretin" Acton regarding the obscenity charge against the lyrics on the Dayglo's album Feed us a fetus.
And the moral of the story is: Make your records offensive and get loads of free press. Punk rock victory.
David Firth love you David
David Firth. What's going on?! Love your stuff x
Almost bankrupted Fringe who was the main distributor of punk rock from the us...I grew up in a border town and the closest cool record store was over the bridge. POPToNES in Niagara Falls. ON. BEER AND RECORDS. Frank was the coolest guy who ever sat behind a counter...always suggesting stuff based on my purchase.
We appreciated the great Canadian bands...dayglo was my first punk rock show at 15 or 14, SNFU a year later. I just hit 50 and am cranking Guano right now. Timeless and as good as any hardcore ever. Always wore a Sabres hat to piss them off
David, you’re the man.
woah w david firth
So funny how little this is compared to the stuff we see nowadays. Dayglo fought for what makes music awesome.
Dayglo Abortions rule!
"This record here is ancient" the clerk says of the 7 year old DK's record.
I remember this ban. The only thing it accomplished was getting people to want to get their hands on the album. I bet it helped Dayglo sell more copies.
this special made me listen to the dayglo abortions
thank you vancouver
I like how 'Fuck My Shit Stinks' and 'Fuck Satan To Death' are back to back. Hell, I just like how a song title like 'Fuck Satan To Death' made it on to BCTV.
" ... who is also a policeman ... "
I remember buying this album in Toronto on Yonge at Sams. There was no ban that i remember. the album is actually really comedic, we still till this day sing some of the songs just for kicks to screw with our lesser cool friends that never heard of the band.
i have footage i shot 1st DGA Australian tour of 2 shows. One is at a skate park outdoors in the afternoon. They were playing past the time noise restrictions said they had to finish, the Cops rock up (they had been earlier to warn everyone about public drinking) and the band is playing 'black sabbath' and not only are they still drinking booze but jimbo's rockin a joint..the cops get on stage and they keep playing even when the cops are in their face signalling for them to stop! f'n CLASSIC!!!
Hey, I saw that video about a year ago. Fantastic video, thank you very much!
this record changed my life.
Did I just see the Dead Kennedys used as an example of something old in 1988? LOL!
"Ancient" is how she put. I guess 9 years is ancient. LOL!
@@sydbarrett5 lmao
@@sydbarrett5 That chick was clueless
"The rodent has been shot."
nah, they just hid it
@@nucleardubs Yeah but where they hid it, you don't want to know.
That cop is Fitzgibbons! He's in the lyrics of Two Dogs Fucking. LOL. I never knew that was his real name. Fucking brilliant.
LOL he got immortalized with the Mayor of Napean.
The Dayglow's are the BEST,Anyone have footage of them on vhs or dvd IM working on the OFFICIAL DGA DOCUMENTRY,Im tryin to get as much stuff as i can so i can put the BEST of dga Live stuff from 1979-present,Cheers
Flash forward to 2017 and DGA still doing it.
How can you see "Stupid Songs" on a track listing, pop it in for a quick listen, and not go, "Oh, I get it. This is awesome."
I bite all my words from each TV Guide
I steal all my solos from the Rolling Stones
Went to a dayglo show last night with my two (now adult) sons. Family outing to the hardcore show. Unless you’ve actually been you can’t understand how genuinely nice and wholesome that is.
Also was talking to Murray as I’m from Victoria in the 90s and he said “oh yeah I sent them thank you cards we were nobodies before they did that.”
Proto-Streisand Effect.
Oh what a stupid world!
Thank you for posting this brings back my youth .
I used to listen to these guys while stag diving in a mosh pit at Queen's palace in Toronto
D.G.A. are still playing (1979 - present) in 2021 and They Will Be Toasting 'Till the End of Time!!!
My mom told me about when they came to our hometown and played "Release the hostages". Not one woman raised their shirt and the lead singer was so visibly disappointed. Mom felt pride at the moment lol
Another one of the countless feeble attempt to diminish free expression and use business as a means to do so.
Thank you BCTV for increasing their exposure and influence! The people needed it.
Just saw them play in my hometown. Still going hard!
lol my favorite song on that vinyl is ''fuck my shit stinks''
argh fuck billy!
You know I feel like Johnny Cash....going down in that ring of burning fire
"His teenage daughter brought the record home and HE decided it went too far!" LOL.
Sounds like the tagline for Reefer Madness.
Totally! That's what it was like in the 80s though.
I remember playing Let Them Eat Jellybeans in the car when I was a kid. "Jesus Entering From the Rear" by The Feeders came on and my dad frowned, then listened, then turned red, then popped out the cassette, threw it to the back of the station wagon, and launched into a litany of profanities far worse than anything on the album. 😂
"on the back the rodent is shot, and many song names include four letter words we cannot show you, and many songs include lyrics with bodily functions
Saw dayglo tonight
It was awesome
The company I worked for, Trend Music Group bankrolled Fringe, the company that supported the Dayglos,
Not enough is known about Trend, we gave Canada so much music thru out the years. M
But anyways, when this was going down my uncle who owned Trend told us about this, that the band was really out there but sales were sales.
And he gave my brother and I the album
Here for today guano tomorrow.... listen to this album frequently to this day
holy shit Tony Parsons looks young! Here we are 20 years later and DA still kicks ass. Been listening to them myself for 21 years now.
God forbid the police officer should sit down and talk to his daughter. No it's better just to ban anything that you deem to be offensive and take away everyone's choice and freedom of expression. Then you can pretend we live in a happy perfect world.
Landmark case in CANADA!!! I guess Dayglow's music was a little too rough for them in 1980s. Their records were seized\banned for a bit but hey the band won in Supreme Court of Canada even though the CEO of their record label (FRINGE) BEN HOFFMAN ripped D.G.A. and other bands off. Dayglow's 1979 - End of time.
What great free advertisement!

in '88 she holds up an album from '78 and says, "this record is, like, ancient...."
lol
3:11 some preppy wearing his girlfriends mickey mouse sweater.... was offended
@@cjparrott Both of those people cracked me up.
@@cjparrott You seriously think that guy has a girlfriend? Yeah right!
@@WhyDoIKeepFuckinUp lol
1980 I believe.
I remember watching this when it aired. Holy fuck my shit stinks
One father, who is also a policeman, thought it went too far. Fuck society. Praise Dayglo. Long live Cretin.
Bet they regret having him on. He makes them look like dingbats. Spot on.
Dayglos are playing tonight in Hamilton Ontario!!!
Yo I wonder if the daughter listening to them was a babe.
Great Canadian Punk Band. I bet the guy in the mickey mouse shirt was offended for "hide the hamster" lol, and we can all figure out why ;)
So an investigation was launched because a police officer didnt like the music her daughter brought home. Jesus Christ, the idiocy.
Their next album was entirely dedicated to him. The title track is about Jim Fitzgibbon discovering the obscene situation.
Really listen to that album and with the exception of the Crosby Stills and Nash cover every song is a direct fuck-you to all the above tennis ball headed douchebags, and some are mentioned by name if you listen to the lyrics closely.
GO CRETIN! you are my hero
Best punk band ever.
This was when "punk" bands decided they wanted to become "metal" bands.
Yes, the Here Today period was a channeling of their inner thrash metal selves. They were probably really into Suicidal Tendencies and Master of Puppets around this time.
I loved their transition from hardcore punk to thrash metal punk like Fuck Satan To Death.
first exposure grade 6 thanks to my best friends 5 yr older brother....never turned back.....and i was born in 1978...
thats so old school. I had both those albums over 15 years ago.
Where's the court footage? Can't find it anymore
did you use a speak and spell to record this
Suitable for mailing to Ottawa and Washington housewives, anyone else with an attitude about what they hear, and me too if you are feeling generous --==:-)
+DickPHC And Toronto. Especially the fuckin UT women's collective.
Wow ! Pre-internet days when Seymour street was record row!....This story is hilarious. Especially the end when Doriana Temelo mentions The Daylos thought the police did them a favour by seizing their albums. "Record sales are expected to climb." hahahaha
been a fan since 89, these guys rule!!!!i am my own god!!!!!
I love the record store worker who shows the "Holiday in Cambodia" single and says its ancient, that single at that time was like 8 years old.. I dont know if that fits the definition of ancient, even by punk standards lol.
Not a rodent getting shot! People gas rats when they infest their homes or poison them. Thats supposed to be offensive? The Dayglos could have cooked up something way more offensive than that.
Canadian Legends
3:13!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Dudes got a mickey mouse shirt on, talkin about how he finds this music offensive!!!!!!! Too freakin funny!!!!
Hilarious
Victoria OGs and true inspirations.. DGA rule!!!!!!! Free Speech #1
I wish they wouldn't put those bars over those words that begin with an F. I'm trying to figure out what those words are.
I remember as a teenager in the 90s some smug shitbag cop was trying to brag to me and my friends about arresting the dayglos back when this happened.
+ninetysevena no u don't remember that it didn't happen
It's is 'Here today Guano tomorrow'
I remember hearing this obscenity charge in the paper back in 88, think I cut it out. Or maybe it was the woman who complained about the lyrics in dear abby.
Sounds like an identical story to Dead Kennedy's- Frankenchrist
Aargh, Fuck, Kill. lol
damn i wanna meet the chick who likes dayglo
How many of these hypocrites have mouse traps in their homes?
sound?
Fuck I totally remember seeing this on the news.
'... guano tomorrow' is the best record of the 80's.
Saw them in the 80's open for Gwar at the Brick'n'Wood in New Haven, CT and asked Spuds McKenzie to play Shred Central.....he gave me an odd look and said "Nah."
4 month investigation?
Be a responsible parent and teach YOUR children what's right and what's wrong. Charging these musicians does no 'justice' for the man's daughter. If your child is so easily persuaded by fun (usually sarcastic) lyrics such as Dayglo's, then punch them in the head. It'll do you both some good.
LOL, I only just learned that Jim Fitzgibbons was a real person.
The complainers are sick, not the Dayglo abortions. They rule!
and i dont need em anymore
Imagine getting worked up over a song called “Fuck My Shit Stinks”
no one is prob gonna believe me but I met the daughter of one of the guys in this band in a mental hospital in fact it's how i found out about this band lmao. she got put in cause she was yelling in some liquor store while holding a knife and ended up cutting herself they had to put her in isolation cause she wouldn't stop manically talking to me lol
I remember when this happened. Too bad Dayglo were on fringe. Maybe they would have gotten some more support if they were on another label.
what is a reck ord?
"the police did them a favor"
Don't you just love it when a plan backfires.
1:06
f*** my s*** stinks? FUCK YEA!!! HOLY FUCKIN MOLEY!!! IM GONNA LISTEN TO THAT RIGHT NOW!!!
ha ha ha the guy with the micky mouse shirt is a bit well how can i say this .....
Whats The Name Of The Song At 0:40
Here today guano tomorrow
@AdobeGillis AMEN!
great band
this fucking rules.
Got the re-issues, get 'em!
Only in Canada
you tell em murry
people in the 80s are way to soft, he's like cautioning his viewers that it has offensive materials and sensitive viewers shouldn't lmao
We had Karens even back then!
ha ha ha ! i cant wait to see these guys on 06/01/11 in denver co and 06/12/11 in cleveland oh. i grew up listening to these badasses
hahaha skull skates :)
They were Vancouver based I think. I could be wrong.
reck ord?
this record is ancient?! for fuck sakes it can not be more than 8 years...now a days music that is 8 years old sounds pretty much the same as todays
Haha, love it... GO Dayglo!!!
"It's certainly not something I would by" no shit it's not meant for you old copper lol
modest sales lolz,
I did buy a Dayglo Abortions album once. Sorry, wasn't that impressed with them, but would never want them banned or anything.
