As an aside, I'm proud of Macaulay Culkin, as he's turned himself around from his trainwreck of growing up from child stardom a few years back and is now a rather chill and humble dude on the internet.

Which is why it's all the more interesting that Shia is so easily hated. Rarely as there been a more pathetic and unlikable "victim." Anytime someone tries to point out how shitty of a person he is, it's all about "my family, my upbringing, my dad, my childhood," and when he does "take responsibility" it's always performative. "A man knows when to apologize, even if it's just to stop the bickering." i.e. "I'm a man and I'm better than you. It's YOUR childishness that's the problem."
He's feels the world owes him because even though he's been "unjustly wronged" by the world, he's sorry. Yeah, Shia. I remember being 25 too. Time to grow the fuck up.

Wow, I had no idea. I think a big difference with Shia is that HE was super motivated to succeed whereas many child stars were pushed by their parents. His seemed supportive but not maniacal. Once reaching the plateau of high level acting it must be difficult to know how to keep moving forward. Kinda like sports superstars who spend their whole lives being single minded about success but then reach a point of having to retire and then having to live the rest of their lives not being in the spotlight.

I reckon those kids wanted fame early on too. I remember being an egotistical little shit. Kids aren't as innocent as they seem. They want the fame and fortune. Maybe you can blame the TV, the culture we live in, the allure is inescapable - to be rich, to have lots of stuff, all that illusion of salvation and happiness has been there, and deceiving us, from the beginning for us since we were kids, deceiving us into false sense of happiness, some salvation that lies in the future. Maybe they were driven by the same mortal fears like everyone else: fear of death, or maybe they were running from the question that we all must answer: who are we really? For some, salvation was to find the antidote to death, in whatever way we could, whatever form it may come. For me it was to find some sort of real magic in this world, to find God, to escape death. I found the answer, in a way I never thought I would, and in a place I never thought I would, and it's not an escape from the physical death, it's to find fearlessness because there is no real death, there is no real life, it's only a dream. It's like a different dimension, where the limits of current thinking (of the ego/person) are transcended/simply not there. We are one. blah blah blah, I've lost you haven't I.

Your wrong about the athletes not living in the spotlight. these high level athletes are training their asses off day in day out and constantly getting hurt during the game. Outside of sports their body is always hurting and in pain cause of the physical toll. When these athletes leave sports it’s hard on them because their entire life since they were kids was focused on the sport, not the spotlight.

Even success stories of change involves setbacks and backtracks. The idea of people getting that one message that changes everything is mostly in stories.
Though also note that the constant 'i messed up'messages were not what he said in between messups. The video just pulled from his future interviews where he talked about the past.
What used to happen was that he would screw up then type a message he took from somewhere else as his apology, then repeat that. They more genuine responses were more recently after everything fell apart.
Does this guarantee change? No. Butt a person who is going to change will make these actions. Time will tell if he follows through

Egotistical abusers often give "heartfelt" apologies because talking about themselves & how bad they feel still feeds their ego.
It's wonderful how empathetically people have received his words, but I wonder about his actions.
I don't know what he's done with his time/money/energy making things right that he did wrong -
All I've witnessed is him apologizing then continuing the same pattern of behaviour -
Maybe he thinks rehabs & apologies are the only steps he needs to take to change, or perhaps the only ones he's capable of right now, instead of ongoing therapy to address reasons/triggers/etc for his behaviours.
He has the time & money to get the best kind of help, if he thinks it's worth it, but many people who have the means to go to therapy do not go, because they are afraid. They don't want to face themselves.
He's an actor who throws himself into roles so hard perhaps because he doesn't like to be in his own head - same reason we all look for distractions at some time or another but we have a 'Self' to return to.
He openly states that he needs guidance. I don't think a parole officer is the one to do it tho ~ I think he needs a therapist who can help him.
I have nothing against him & I truly hope he gets the help he needs.

I think it's a great sentiment to believe that redemption is possible but it isn't the public that needs to forgive him; it's the women that he emotionally and physically abused. Maybe they'll be able to achieve some kind of closure when the case goes to court next year. Redemption doesn't need to include, for Shia LaBeouf, living a public life as a celebrity, starring in movies, and operating an acting school.

He was descending into a fog that became more inescapable the further he disappeared into it. If anything I think that child stars that transition to adult stars should have some kind of "sanity break". It's a hard thing going that hard at roles for that long. Acting isn't a bowl of cherries, sometimes it is rather boring and time consuming. For Disney stars you are also pushed into a purity requirement as well, which is why so many former Disney stars rebel to wash away that whiter than white image. I think there is also a fear that if you go on a sanity break, you won't get roles again. But I'd argue that if you are burnt out already, you won't get the roles you hoped for anyway. Shia can recover this, he just needs some time of reflection and chill. He's got plenty of money, he can turn it around.

Sometimes we roll the dice thinking we have the right one, I took a gamble in marriage more than once. I've ended up divorced both times. The second time it lasted much longer though. I am a father of two grown kids. One is normal and getting on with her life, I'm proud of her she works hard and has an associates in Accounting, and now a good job etc.... However my son who is 21 now is a low-functioning autistic guy. He can't talk, that's known as non-verbal and his life is difficult. Even so he goes to school, for those that are like him. And he wants to go he wakes up good and his mom gets him all ready and takes him in, and coming home the school bus does that. I'm there and have become his care-giver now upon his return. So really I've accomplished many things I wanted and never did want to be lonely. In my fifties now I'm mostly retired and I concentrate on my adult kids and have learned to work with their mother, my ex-wife. There is just enough money to live and get some things I want and help them too. I bring that up because money management is important, struggling to pay bills had me working 2 jobs for 4 years or more after being in the regular Army for 12 years. And also was in the Army Reserves after I got out of the Army and then had 2 jobs too. Sometimes you gotta give more than 100% to reach an end goal. Now I realize that I did that.

You completely glossed over the end of the "Don't Worry Darling" story (as well as the peripheral drama on that production). Much like with the Alec Baldwin case, Shia produced texts after the fact that vindicated him. The director (Olivia Wilde) said she fired him, but he had texts and even a video call where he backed out because he didn't want to do the film without a longer rehearsal time (because he's so "method," as we know). The video call is begging him to come back to the production. There's a lot more than just that, but I'll have to summarize: Wilde then went on to claim Florence Pugh was scared of Shia, which Pugh denies. Wilde replaces Shia with Harry Styles, and ends up turning the cast against her by sleeping with him on-set (There are reports of production delays due to them spending so much time in her trailer). (BTW, can you imagine the backlash if a male director was slipping away for a fling with a starlet ten years his junior? I have yet to hear the word "unprofessional" in this case, but actions speak louder than words because...) The press tour for the movie ends up being a disaster and memed multiple times. Pugh purposely misses some of the dates and shows up late to the premier so she doesn't have to interact with Wilde. Chris Pine famously looks like he doesn't want to be there. Wilde swears she never hooked up with Styles until after she split from the 10-year relationship with Jason Sudeikis, but look up the "special salad dressing" story from the nanny. Lots of details in there no one could invent, and not the sort of thing Sudeikis and Wilde want out there. Shia may run with a bad crowd, but he dodged a bullet by skipping out on that trainwreck. Sucks that most people are only going remember Wilde's side of the story even with her cemented reputation as a liar and cheat while he's got receipts no one wants to see.

I get the point he was trying to make about copyrights; creativity being "owned for profit" and wanting to liberate that creativity, etc. But the way he went about that was, hypocritically, to profit off others' creativity for himself---exactly what he was purporting as the problem.
Even if he truly felt that creative endeavors and entertainment should be open source, he went about it in such a way that hurts his stance more than helps it. That, and he should have realized how he got where he got in the first place.....

It didn't erase their wrongdoings, but rather taught them what sort of people the cannot be. As a few examples I can mention probably one of the biggest ones: Robert Downey Jr, who messed up big time on every possible field, but since recovery, he became one of the best actors of his generation. Craig Ferguson, perhaps less known, but one of my favorites had similar story to tell. Also let's not forget about Justin Bieber, yes, I know I know - Beebs. I couldn't care less about him, but since his Comedy Central roast in 2016 (if I remember correctly), he grabbed my attention as someone who is trying get off the bad boy path and get on the right one. He acknowledged he messed up, but also said something very interesting: I was a teenager, who all of a sudden became incredibly popular, millions of girls shouting at the slightest sight of me with a 200 million dollars bank account. I could have everything I wanted. How would you react? This sparked the thought, that probably most would fly off the handle in those circumstances.
As a final word: I wish all the best to those who struggle for different reasons, but especially to those who are willing to go to extremes in order to turn their life 180 degrees and make things right for people around and especially for themselves.

The key words in this self-excuse are "I can't let myself feel bad": When your friend comes home and tells you she got fired for unjust cause, got robbed on the way home, and got hit by a car outside of your house, do you say "I understand the struggles you went through, but I can't let myself feel bad when you're doing well in life but there are literally billions of people living in terrible conditions."? Empathy isn't conserved; when you use it on one thing it doesn't mean you now have less of it to spend! You "can't let myself feel bad" because you don't want to. Fine, be an unfeeling guy, but don't put it on the poor billions. They have enough troubles without shouldering your misplaced lack of empathy.

Shia is a vulnerable narc with a hint of bipolar. Something I know very well unfortunately. I call it death by Wetiko. I don't know any covert narcs that ever changed. I myself have to struggle with this every second of the day. These people are in so much pain, it's insane and cannot really be conveyed accurately. I think the best thing for us is to be alone and make art (and not be known). I honestly don't know if this demon can be conquered entirely. I really feel for the dude like he's my own blood....and the people who care for him...god help them understand. Deep inside he is just a child trying to feel anything... It's the anhedonia that drives us to extremes... noface as our phersu. And the result is genius...tragic genius.

Typical addict. It's not you, it's a "demon" or "sickness" or people not understanding your pain or your special kind of genius or art. You're all just selfish, abusive people who use others and then throw them away when they aren't useful for you. Nothing else. Even here in the comments you're trying to milk sympathy from people to justify your behaviour. I've seen hundreds of people just like you while working in rehab. I'm guessing your whole comment was rehearsed and you've told it to countless people to garner sympathy and pity so you can manipulate them and get what you want.

I would really like one of these child actors to do a tell all about what kind of torment they were subjected to and what terrible things they’ve been propositioned with and had to do to keep their place at the table because it seems that the only way they don’t end up either busted completely or having their careers rebound is to leave the industry completely or make a metaphorical deal with the devil.

I mean, it’s problematic that obviously bad people don’t get to experience suitable consequences, but sometimes the art is of great enough value to society that maybe that outweighs not having justice served. There are plenty of examples of art where the artist was a really horrible person, but we wouldn’t want for the art to not exists. H.P. Just a correction: The comic story Shia La Beouf stole from Daniel Clowes was "Justin M. Damiano" (published 2008), not "Ghost World" (published 1997). "Ghost World" is Daniel Clowes' most well-known comic and film adaptation, so it's often brought up as a reference point ("the creator of Ghost World") in the mainstream press whenever they're writing about him.

This was such an awesome video, thank you for putting it together. I do think I don't quite agree with your general closing argument that everyone always deserves a chance to be redeemed. There are some "wrongs" that are so extreme, that do so much damage to people or to entire industries, that there is not enough "good" or reflection you can do to ever truly "right the wrong". Physical abuse is one of those, so are things like sexual assault. No one is owed the closure of forgiveness or redemption when they have done something so grievous. Especially for people in the entertainment industry, you are not owed a place in that industry if you have caused so much negative impact to others in it. If your argument is "well what do they have to pursue then?" its just being a better person. You don't get a reward for deciding to finally pursue that minimum threshold, a reward of returning to the status quo should not be the point. Hilariously I think Bojack Horseman's ending depicts that perfectly.
