    I've read your other materials and appreciate the video to give visuals to that post. I have a question, what is the clearance between the cutting bar and the grate? How much material (thickness) is shaved off or harvested in one pass?

      The cutting bar is 1.5 inches above the grate. As the cutting bar moves through the material, it releases that 1-1/2 inches plus a little more that is disturbed also falls through, so I estimate it to be about 2" total. Thanks for the question and thanks for viewing!

    Is this vermicompost suitable for a tropical country like the Philippines and can, I used in rice fields like any other fertilizer?

    • @tools.for.vermiculture
      @tools.for.vermiculture  8 месяцев назад

      Vermicompost works to increase the microbial life in the soil, which improves plants' ability to thrive in the soil and also resist pests and disease. I cannot speak specifically for rice fields in particular, but I know that there are many vermicomposters in SE Asia. Thanks for watching!

    Where do you get your materials for the precompost?

    Hey Steve and all.
    Because horse manure, according to Glenn Munroe in his manual for vermicomposting, is a medium-good bedding (at 22-56 C:N) we were planning to mix horse manure with shredded paper. Maybe LOTS of paper to make it inert enough? Our food source (for now) is mostly school kitchen prep waste and cardboard.
    Is my thinking correct?

      Horse stall mucking is pretty close to ideal C:N, typically manure plus the sawdust or straw. It is usually left in a pile to burn off its urea content for a few months, starting the decomposition process, before using it in worm bins. If you have pure manure, you will need to mix it with a high C material like straw, sawdust or cardboard. If you want to include food scraps, you might need to add more C materials to balance it. Check some references to get a decent mix and your worms will be happy. Thanks for viewing!

    Why peat moss? I’d like a very in-depth book about vermicomposting, have you written one?
