David Gates has one of the, most beautiful tenor voices I've ever heard. Imagine growing up in the 1970's and getting to hear all these natural voices, live, no auto tune, and no pitch control. Just pure talent. We lived in the best music generation ever.
Only a true expert could make this look so easy. If he were sitting there without the guitar, without the orchestral back-up, you'd still be mesmerized by his voice.
For my ears, the most beautiful love song of all time, just another day at the office for music from the 70s. Bread almost makes you believe mankind can live by Bread alone.....
Great Song! I grew up listening to the soft rock music of Bread in the 70's & had their albums. Love David Gates voice. He has one of the most soothing & mellow voices. They had so many hits such as "Make It With You", "Baby I'm-a Want You", "Diary", "Lost Without Your Love", "It Don't Matter To Me", "The Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender", "Aubrey" etc. In 1978, Gates enjoyed success as a solo artist with the hit singles "Goodbye Girl" (from the movie The Goodbye Girl) & "Took The Last Train".
Isn’t this one of the most beautiful things you’ve ever heard? It must have been played at millions of weddings back in the day. Might still be. David Gates was sort of the male equivalent of Karen Carpenter to me. Their voices were just so pleasing to listen to. So warm. Shame they never did a duet!
Interesting you mention KC. For whatever reason the idea of a duet on this song between those two popped into my head listening to this reaction...and yes it would be celestial... Wish I could get the ear of Richard Carpenter, actually, and suggest a KC duets project. Like the Nat/Natalie Cole recordings, or the duet on All The Way by Céline Dion and Frank Sinatra, or Gregory Porter duetting with Ella Fitzgerald...it would be quite a simple matter, now, to craft duet versions of Carpenter classics with KC singing alongside the likes of, say, Josh Groban or Adele or k.d. lang... That would sell. (As would a Carpenters standards CD, which is likewise still possible by combining existing tracks with new piano renderings by Richard solo...)
*Guitar Man* *Make It With You* *Baby I’m-A Want You* A few more to get you started. Dayum, these bring back memories! Keep ‘em coming! Lovin’ your journey down my musical past. The 70’s really were the best for the purity of talent and sound. We won’t think about the wardrobe choices.
The 1970s was probably the greatest decade of music! And yes, the musicians were like poets with their lyrics back then, while today's music if hopeless for the most part.
I still have a copy of Best of Bread Vol 1. Not really in my 'hard rock' wheelhouse, but I did listen to this quite a bit. I still tell my wife occasionally "baby I'm-a-want-you......baby I'm-a-need-you!' My favorite two Bread song are Guitar Man and Everything I Own. Memories.
Bread's 1973 album The Best of Bread was my favorite. I ended up buying three of the cassettes because I absolutely wore them out from listening to it every day. I still have the last one I bought.
You put one of the purest, most beautiful male voices of all time with arguably the greatest love song ever written, or at least in the top five, you have absolutely otherworldly music of a quality unknown today. It is as beautiful and relevant today as it was in 1975. This song was beyond popular when it came out, being adopted by many movies and TV shows as a theme, most notably The Young and Restless soap opera TV show....
I love it when music is poetry and heartfelt, and it touches your heart and soul. I love true artistry and not this processed, forgettable music today! This song is over 50 years old and still is relevant. Today's music is generally forgotten in 2 weeks.
I think a lot of people don’t realize that in 1974 I think when this came out, there was one pop station, one rock station, one country station (on a.m. lol), one classical station, and some local talk stations. A song like this that came out when I was five or six years old, and was played on the only radio station I ever heard that wasn’t sports, constantly through my childhood and teenage years. It’s just epic. Butterfly effect is all I can say. ❤ Also there were never any lyrics printed on anything we bought lol. Misheard lyrics channels are hilarious and real. My two favorite programs from when I was at university in the late 80s were Dr. Demento and the bad music hour. They’re right up there with the midnight special, trust me.
I got to see them in concert when I was 17. I didn’t really want to go but my Mom loved this song and I went as her date. Musically at that time I was more of a rocker, but man I’m so glad mom drug me to see them live.
I've seen this clip 30 or 40 times and I'm just as moved as the first time i saw it. Loved your reaction to this flawless performance of a just plain lovely song.
Bread is awesome. Two other great ones of theirs are Everything I Own and Aubrey. Aubrey always reminds me of the one that got away. 🥲 David Gates is a genius.
Listen to Diary, Aubry, It Don't Matter To Me. David went to high school in Tulsa, OK, with my old guitar teacher. He is one of the best ballad writers within the last 70 years.
Love David Gates & Bread ❤ David is an amazing singer & songwriter. He formed a band in the late 50's with Leon Russell. David & Leon graduated from the same high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. If you haven't you need to check out Leon & also check out The Gap Band who are also from Tulsa. You'll hear some great tunes 👌
I prefer live over studio as you get to see and hear the real talent of artists of yesteryear. No idiotic autotune or pitch correction. We all tuned up in the studio and recorded live together as one band. That's why the music holds up decades later. God gives the gift as he sees fit to all people. Use your gifts for everyone! No artificial fillers just straight up. Keep it coming Steve as I'm enjoying watching you grow musically.
Not only this is a great song the other thing is the greatest makeout record best of bread ever you had to have the same track tape in your car when you're on a date
You have to discover DAVID GATES' masterpiece: "Suite: Clouds, Rain" (from his solo album 'First', 1973). All his genius as a composer summed up in one song (in three movements; approximately nine minutes). Lyrics, music, sound effects, arrangements: Sublime!!!
I love Bread’s music! I have not heard one that I don’t like. A big influence on me as a teenager. I saved my money for ages to buy a book of sheet music of some of Bread’s hits. It was for guitar but I played from it with my clarinet. Someone stole it out of my band cubbie. I nearly cried.
The Yin and the Yang. Need me some Zen from Bread from time to time. Man he's smooth, darn near pitch perfect and so clean on that guit-fiddle. Live performances are so much more fun and interesting.
I often say , he is the male version of Karen Carpenter...what I would not have given to see them do a duo together. Damn, there I go crying again.....
All of these older songs from the 70s and 80s are just pure talent. The musicians had the ability to write lyrics, compose music and then sing and perform a beautiful piece, usually in front of an audience, and that performance would eventually become the music video. They didn't need half dressed twirking dancers, fireworks or strobing colored lights to make the show. The song lyrics made the songs back then. There was usually some sort of story or message and they didn't cut down people or target against race, religion or gender. Unlike today's music, there were very few cuss words used as well. The love songs were usually written and sung to someone special. Another song you might like is Reminiscing (1978) by Little River Band. They are an Aussie band that is chill and that song is so mellow. Its a love song and a little story. The music and the harmonies are smooth. ruclips.net/video/XBETVhHpcPk/видео.htmlsi=mvD9SbFgcAa1cYoP Enjoy!
This particular song uses words and beautiful metaphors to describe the indescribable and paints a deep emotional picture that we can all interpret and feel in our hearts. It takes a lot of effort to create metaphors that can capture the depth of what you're trying to say. It also takes a command of the language to find just the right words that perfectly convey the intention.
I just been watching one video after another Oct. 21st, well in 2 minutes it will be Oct 22nd 2024. 2 of my friends and I went and voted early in Minnesota. Yesterday as of midnight. I'm playing catch up. I've been out of pocket the last week off and on. But, these songs are just awesome. I'm a firm believer in the music from 1958-1985. You can't touch that. As MC Hammer said once. 😂😂😂😂 Just wanted to say love this journey you're on. Keep on keepin on Dude!✌️✌️✌️
I think the lp, the best of bread and the LP, Steve Miller's greatest Hits were probably in every single collection of every person I ever grew up with. If you want a summary of their greatest hits, check out that best of album. They have a couple of them, but the first one is just classic
Amy likes Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, Simon and Garfunkel and Elton John. I think we know what kind of rocker she is/could be. Prog is my favourite rock, followed by hard Rock/ Heavy Metal, but I can enjoy the softer side of rock. Amy’s preference comes as no surprise. ❤. 😊
Steven, meant to mention, you might want to check out some Jesse Winchester. “Nothing But a Breeze” is a good start. He has a very unique voice as well, “My Songbird” and “Eulalie” are two favorites. “Twigs and Seeds” is a fun one, too.

Guitar Man. It's about the affect music can have on you.
@@setonhillstudios “Make it with You” which is their biggest hit
You have to listen to "Diary"!
The more I hear "If" over and over again, and it never gets old, this is the most prefect love song every written. EVER!!!!!!
David Gates married his high school sweetheart in 1958, he was 18, and they are still married.
In 1957 he recorded his first song “ Jo Baby” for her
Sounds like Dion DiMucci and his Sue!
David Gates has one of the, most beautiful tenor voices I've ever heard. Imagine growing up in the 1970's and getting to hear all these natural voices, live, no auto tune, and no pitch control. Just pure talent. We lived in the best music generation ever.
I saw Bread about 1975. You're right. We were so lucky to be alive then.
🇬🇧
Another gorgeous song by Bread/David Gates is "Baby Im'a Want You" 👌🎶🎼❤️
I think this is one of the most beautiful love songs of the 70s.
Yes along with the Hollies The Air that I Breathe.

This was my wedding song in 1978! Still brings me to tears.
Can't listen to this beautiful song without tearing up. Great choice for your wedding. :) Ours (in 1987) was Alice Cooper, You and Me.
@@justmare111 My song was "Unforgettable". He was forgettable!...lol

Diary. It's a brutal song.
The sound of the Ovation guitar combined with David's voice, is amazingly hypnotizing. Always loved Bread!
I'll put David's voice up against anybody's voice pitch freaking perfect
Art Garfinkel is up there, but his voice was different.
The best thing about musicians in the seventies they all supported each other no matter the genre
Memories.... I know exactly when, where and WHO dedicated this to me, I will never forget him......only once in my life ❤️❤️❤️
Such a simple, yet powerful ballad. One of the best, if not the best, love song of the 70's.
The 1970s was probably the greatest decade of music! And yes, the musicians were like poets with their lyrics back then, while today's music if hopeless for the most part.

'Diary' is another great song by Bread/David. It tells a story with that amazingly sweet voice.
Brilliant musician. That voice just so natural and easy. How could that possibly be that easy???
Shewee!! You ain’t lying! 💯
Checkout his album “ First” very well done and still fresh even though it’s quite old.

I was named after a Bread song, (Aubrey), you should check that one out!! I think it’s pretty, but I’m biased lol.
Bread is amazing! Diary by them is AMAZING!!!!!! DAVID Gates voice is so beautiful!!!!
