    When I saw your left hand, I was so inspired because someone who has a hand like you can be so crafty but most people with perfect hands will not be able to do crap with a knife and some craft material. Thank you very much for not only making this instructive video, but also giving me a reason to put some faith back in humanity.

    This is super nice. I needed a parachute for an emergency rescue parachute for my multi-rotor. This is fantastic for saving a multirotor going into free fall.

    Great stuff. Parachutes a big part of my life. If you slide a nylon ring around the lines up to the canopy you get really cool openings. Enjoy.

    A great idea is to go to a dollar store and buy a small umbrella .Just take all the steel parts off and tie all the ends to string and you have a cheap parchute. They come in cool colors too .Just a quick way to make it. thanks for the video.

    Nice job Ed... I've been using the plastic bags from Target/Kmart/Walmart and such. Everything's the same except I tape kite string to the bag and use a fishing swivel to tie all the lines together, works great... except when the parachutes are tucked together for a day or two, they tend to, um, drive to the ground REAL fast. Otherwise if I just fold them soft like your second way all works great. I may have to try this... Thanks for sharing... AGAIN!!! jerry

    Very good your alternative to a parachute and I really liked even so consider a good idea what I'm going to ask, but what would you think of taking advantage of the fabric of a discarded umbrella? I've done it with great results.

    I just make up most of it, and test it by trial and error. I did once do a lot of small model rocketry, Estes stuff only. I was a skydiver for a few years and did 1000 jumps, so I learned a lot about parachute physics and behavior in that sport.

    As a kid we use to take a large garbage bag and open it up,cut out a circle then use the small strings inside the chord ,tied about every 4in around then tied all at the bottom,bad thing about that is it would tangle.nice job on the video

    A soldering iron on low to mid heat does well with heat shrink tubing & tape too. If the iron does burn the materials you are using for you parachutes it will make a hole but not set it ablaze. Nice video tutorial. I'll have to try this out!

    Can't think of an alternative, except for sewing. Be sure to use pretty hot glue and get it down very intimately between the netting and onto the nylon canopy. Mine have worked for dozens of deployments with no detachment. Anything radical you're doing? High speed drops?

    Have you considered putting a small hole in the parachute at the top? It will stop the wobble and stabilize the chute so it falls strait a hole the size of a silver dollar would be best you can adjust the size for each parachute size.

  • @usarmyfl1

    Great stuff. The cord is also called 550 cord, same thing. We used it for everything in the Army.

  • @ExperimentalAirlines
    @ExperimentalAirlines  12 лет назад

    Well, life is short and there are may bumps in the road, but you can't let them slow you down too much. It's interesting though how having a bum hand has made me use my head more to make up for the loss of dexterity, so I have to think of more inventive ways to do things. The mind is very resilient - my approach to these things is just to go for it and know it will happen.

  • @ExperimentalAirlines
    @ExperimentalAirlines  11 лет назад

    Agreed, I would also go with sewn seams, either heavy-duty netting or proper lines. I'm sure there's a formula out there somewhere but 72" canopy comes to mind as being able to slow that plane down to a relatively non-lethal speed, though I'm sure it would get damaged. But I would check that out further, don't trust me.

    @RCPrairieFlyyer I actually tried sewing it and it was a disaster. The tulle mesh gets all caught up in the machine. I was told you could sew it through paper, or use an attachment called a "serger", but for my $.10 and 2 minutes, the hot glue works pretty well.

    For controlled descent of something sensitive, like a camera, I would say 200g for the small and 500g for the large. Of course you can put more or less weight but the falling speed will vary.

    Very nice video. I have a Hubsan quadcopter H109s X4 Pro I was thinking of using your idea and apply the parachute to it. Have you ever put one of your parachutes on a quadcopter? If so how did you go about it? I would think the parachute would sit on top of the drone if you need to deploy it disarm rotors, deploy parachute. Just wondering about if I could use small brushless motor some how connected to my fpv1 transmitter. Any ideas?

    I am riddling on a low weight cheap multicopter solution, I will use my old pilot chute from skydive. it is made frim F-111. Thi will save you packing volume, and has a better chute-characteristic. usually you can also grab them cheap from ebay, from old chutes and skydive systems ;-) or ask the rigger from you next dropzone... :-) but nylon is doing also not too bad.

    Awesome tutorial ! I`m building a 91-1/2 " Telemaster FPV plane as I`m writing this. The Telemaster has a trap door under the plane I plan on using for a parachute in case the plane goes off course and gets into trouble over a populated area I can bring it down safely. The weight of the plane will be pushing 15lbs. with FPV equipment, how big of a chute do you think I will need to bring it down safely ? Also I think I`ll be going with sewn on cord instead of the glued on tulle ? Thanks, AJ

    @usarmyfl1 Thanks man, I'm glad you like 'em. My problem is I like to make all my stuff from scratch, so many companies would have a hard time figuring out how to sponsor me. • @alasdairmccarter764
      @alasdairmccarter764 8 лет назад

      +JP Michaels
      I made one using a piece of thin plastic tube about 30mm diameter, put two notches on one end and hooked a couple of rubber bands over the notches, and made a lid from a piece of flat plastic, a simple pin hinge on one side and then hot glued a micro servo on the other side. Using a wire hook i pull rubber bands down through the tube, push parachute in, close lid and activate servo so that the horn swings over the cap to hold it shut. Release by activating servo and if rubber bands are correct tension, it catapults chute out quite well. I only use a small chute to prevent major damage, good insurance.

    Can I get links for both fabrics? I can't seem to find them for less than $20(combined).

  • @slightlyokvideos
    @slightlyokvideos 9 лет назад

    Does the tulle provide any advantages over traditional string (eg. more drag?) I'm asking because I would think it would take up a lot more space than string.

    • @slightlyokvideos
      @slightlyokvideos 9 лет назад

      Also shouldn't there be some more tull to make it easier for the paracute to open completly as the lower amount of tulle seems to pull down on the sides of the parachute causing less air to be caught.

    • @ExperimentalAirlines
      @ExperimentalAirlines  9 лет назад +1

      Random Rampage The tulle netting can never tangle, which is the main reason for using it. It's also easy to attach to the parachute, and it's really thin and compact, I would guess about even with string suspension lines.

    • @ExperimentalAirlines
      @ExperimentalAirlines  9 лет назад +1

      ExperimentalAirlines Yes, ideally I think you could make a cone of the netting and allow the canopy to expand a bit more, and/or use an apex pull-down line to flatten the canopy. It's mostly a matter of simplifying construction that I just use circle-over-circle netting over nylon. It also folds up neater. Skydiving pilot chutes are this way.
