You did an awesome job! I like all the extra/custom stuff you did to the cabinet as well. Adding those white LEDs to back light the marquee was ingenious.
There are a few varieties of painter's tape that also specifically do a bit more than normal to help fight paint creeping under the edges; worth adding to your DIY kit for the future. They usually brag about this on the packaging, so easy to find at Home Depot or wherever.
That kit is amazing! The cabinet just screams for that faux woodgrain peel and stick laminate that I saw on so many conversion games back in the golden age of video arcades in the early 1980's!
A layer of primer first helps the paint from spreading under the tape. Also try Frog brand tape. Works best for creating smooth lines. Also rolling paint gives you better control over it to prevent jagged lines.
Clear spray paint will stop the color bleeding on your next project. This is wonderfully built. All of the videos I've seen so far have sort of glossed over the case build, while having their wire harnesses magically appear built.
The overlay for the CP is actually the overlay from the old Sega Aero CIty arcade cab. Nice vid! I like how the OG jamma standard is followed here using the 3 button standard instead of opting for the 6 button layout which usually requires a kick harness. Keep up the vids, I enjoy them!
I built a MAME cabinet from the ground-up cutting MDF, t-molding, etc. DON'T SPRAY PAINT!!!! You can use a sponge brush for this size but prime it first, then put a layer of black paint on, let it dry. Put another on... then sand it down with fine grit sand paper. Paint another two layers, sand. Wet sponge off the rest and it's perfect.
Heyoo! You've got a Fiskars cutting board. I'm from the less-than-1000 inhabitant village by the same name in Finland where the company was founded. Crazy to see how big it has gotten over the years. Great video, thanks!
Removing the painters tape while the paint is wet will give a better result. You'll prevent paint crawl and potential paint peeling when removing the tape.
this gave me an idea, why not build a cabinet that would fit a laptop and just slide it in from the back but it would have to be made sleek and for the controller you can buy a usb stick and build it in the cabinet, so all you would have to do is plug in the usb before sliding it in. then u would have to find some sort of emulator and even be able to play online! never seen an online arcade cabinet :D
my only question is how did u regulate how much power was going to the pie and how much was going to the screen and audio amp? im trying to do the same type of idea but with a rechargeable 12v battery. It looks like your jsut plugging them into power and letting them differ the voltage on there own?
They all run off of 5 volts, so as long as the power supply can deliver sufficient current (amps), then everything works great. If you use 12 volt power (either from a battery or AC adapter), then you need a step-down converter to turn the 12V into 5V for the RPi.
This looks so much cooler to get my son for Christmas instead of a stupid Nintendo Switch which will keep him glued to a stupid screen all day outside.
Disculpame amigo, pero me podrias decir que tipo de diametro tiene el cable que usas. En españa no encuentro ese tio de cable, necesito saber su diametro.... muchas gracias y un canal que mola mucho
They're generic white LEDs. They have these little PCBs with a resistor built in so they can operate off of 5V (the LEDs themselves normally use 3.3V). I can't remember where I got them unfortunately, I've had them in my parts bin for years.
Is the screen large enough for comfortable single player gaming? This is my biggest hesitation. If you're playing a racing game like fzero or mariokart, is it really big enough? What are your thoughts?
Yes, this one was a bit of a one-off -- I mentioned as such in the subsequent review video I did. Retro Built explained to me that if someone asks for a custom button layout, they're willing to accommodate as best they can.
Is there anyway I could get a Retro Raspberry PI arcade building kits with eight buttons from Retro Built. I wish to get a portable arcade machine in the house. So, just wondering any advice ?
I thought I was smart in life but this guy just proves that there is always someone smarter than you. cool cabinet. good job. I probably wouldn't bother building one my self because I would just mess it up. but I think you can buy stuff like this pre built on ebay. cool vid ill definitely give a like.
Wow, nice mini arcade, i wanna built that too but instead of using RapsberryPi, i'm using NOAC (Nintendo On A Chip), old CRT TV, and NES Advantage on a single cabinet.
Adam Smith i not good at soldering, meanwhile my "NOAC cabinet" only needs some carpenter skills and cabling :D since "Famiclone" already build in so many games, i didn't even have to use cartridges.
Great Video - how do you manage to play games with more than 3 buttons ? - Is there a way to plug in a USB controller also ? or WIFI controller ? Thanks
Love the video and channel, arcades are awesome, I built a scaled up version of this out of an old mortal kombat cab and a pi3... put a kegerator in it. The arcaderator was born lol
I like the fact you made a SEGA cabinet. It is the only hardware we see officially from Sega, besides what rolls out from Tec Toys. They are making a mega drive machine, like NES classic except Tec Toy includes a working cart slot. What do you think of the Brazilian company TEC TOYS, who still manufactures hardware by SEGA?
How can you play most console games when it only has 3 buttons? Anything Genesis when Sega released the 6 button controller and beyond has more then 3 buttons.
Great video. For someone who is wanting to get into this kind of retro gaming, but has little experience working with electronics, would you recommend this project or should I start with something simpler?
I think a lot of this kit is simply plugging a into b. The most complicated electrical part is going to be wiring the buttons and maybe the speaker. But still, it's a matter of just routing A to B correctly. It looks scary but I don't think it will be that bad ;)
i think that the lack of buttons is the real missed opportunity, this little thing looks like how it's made for fighting games, yet there are only 3 buttons
I'm making bigger ones more buttons cool lights art work one with two sides with two screens and controllers for two players. I live in the United States
Interesting, but would prefer something portable instead, they used to make those cabinets since the hardware was large (crt display, console, game, and coin box). Now the newer technology is much smaller in size and can be made more portable.
You did an awesome job! I like all the extra/custom stuff you did to the cabinet as well. Adding those white LEDs to back light the marquee was ingenious.
for sharp edges on stencils and stripes, a light coat of clear can seal the edges.
There are a few varieties of painter's tape that also specifically do a bit more than normal to help fight paint creeping under the edges; worth adding to your DIY kit for the future. They usually brag about this on the packaging, so easy to find at Home Depot or wherever.
Mark will be pleased with this last game you played.
ALL HAIL LORD KARNAGE
Now all you need is to play it on the AR-ZONE and all is fine.
It's just R-ZONE...
That kit is amazing! The cabinet just screams for that faux woodgrain peel and stick laminate that I saw on so many conversion games back in the golden age of video arcades in the early 1980's!
This is sooooo AWESOME !!!
A layer of primer first helps the paint from spreading under the tape. Also try Frog brand tape. Works best for creating smooth lines. Also rolling paint gives you better control over it to prevent jagged lines.
Prime first with a sponge roller and light sand down to smooth out uneven parts.
Clear spray paint will stop the color bleeding on your next project. This is wonderfully built. All of the videos I've seen so far have sort of glossed over the case build, while having their wire harnesses magically appear built.
I know this is an old video but I love the colour scheme you went for with the paint. Really nice.
This is so satisfying to watch
Simply gorgeous, definitely on my to-do
The overlay for the CP is actually the overlay from the old Sega Aero CIty arcade cab. Nice vid! I like how the OG jamma standard is followed here using the 3 button standard instead of opting for the 6 button layout which usually requires a kick harness. Keep up the vids, I enjoy them!
This is absolutely awesome
Cool! Thanks for this video!

Boy, that's sweet. Maybe I will give it a shot someday.
Awesome work.

This video is awesome! Very cool
Love your taste in music dude. Keep it comin.
Great machine!
This is SO cool!
This looks like a neat little weekend project. I imagine I could find room for the finished product if I tried hard enough.
Nice job
whats the little red button right from the joystick for? thanx
this gave me an idea, why not build a cabinet that would fit a laptop and just slide it in from the back but it would have to be made sleek and for the controller you can buy a usb stick and build it in the cabinet, so all you would have to do is plug in the usb before sliding it in. then u would have to find some sort of emulator and even be able to play online! never seen an online arcade cabinet :D
I'd love to be able to do this but it looks as though you really need to know what you're doing. So cool though.
Nice video, I always find your videos have a very high production value to them.
I tried looking at the site but can't find the 4 button panel layout you have in this video. Was is discontinued or am I just totally missing it?
Really cool build process. I like these videos from you Colin! Will you build a Retro-Gameboy-Pi?
This is worth 2 thumbs up awesome vid!!
Nice build. What was the last shoot em up called?
Is there a reason you decided to solder the buttons rather than music with you next case you have to replace them later on
Really cool video!
What is that fighting game called?
It's King of Fighters R2 for the Neo Geo Pocket Color.
Thanks!

Is it possible to make this with a arcade go?
do you provide already built ones? or is it only do it your self kits...
Does RetroPie allow multiple machines to be connected via Ethernet and/or a hub for multiplayer ?
Can you make another one of these to give to me?!
We need 7 more buttons (Z, L, R, C-UP, C-DN, C-LFT, and C-RT) and a d-pad
Use a car spray primer before painting and you will not need to worry about any bleed between the lines.
Hey, What is the name of that fighting game you're playing at the end.
I've been looking for it for ages. Thanks
It's King of Fighters R2 for the Neo Geo Pocket Color.
How much money and time you use to do this? I want to make one but i dont know anything from programming or engineering lol
What is the name of the amp? I'm searching one with vol +/- buttons since several days... I don't want to use a rotary knob in my cab...
I think it's this one: www.parts-express.com/sure-electronics-aa-ab32131-2x2w-at-4-ohm-class-d-audio-amplifier-board--320-306
how long did this take you
Would want one but its way to pricy.. 330 for what you were given...
ebay lots of different kits to suit different budgets you can always buy yourself a cheap kit and modify it to suit your needs
Hello, what type of "foam tape" is the one that is used? regards
I used 3M VHB double-sided tape, though there are other kinds of foam-backed tape that would work equally well.
Thanks, i'm wondering if the heat becomes a problem there.
What LEDs did you use for the marquee? Where are they from?
They're generic white LEDs. They have these little PCBs with a resistor built in so they can operate off of 5V (the LEDs themselves normally use 3.3V). I can't remember where I got them unfortunately, I've had them in my parts bin for years.
Thank you, I have a kit on the way!
why not prime the case first?
That is so coooool!
Is the screen large enough for comfortable single player gaming? This is my biggest hesitation. If you're playing a racing game like fzero or mariokart, is it really big enough? What are your thoughts?
Do a dreamcast one.
i thought the three button layout was a bit odd...however if you go to the website, the kits are all 6 button.
Yes, this one was a bit of a one-off -- I mentioned as such in the subsequent review video I did. Retro Built explained to me that if someone asks for a custom button layout, they're willing to accommodate as best they can.

Don't use a Happ controller if you need more sensitive motions in the joystick.
Great video. Would have been nice to see little bit more info on GPIO connection with the arcade setup controls.
love it
but 6 button interface in the flick, cool vid thx
Wow, nice mini arcade, i wanna built that too but instead of using RapsberryPi, i'm using NOAC (Nintendo On A Chip), old CRT TV, and NES Advantage on a single cabinet.
IndraEMC Why not both?
Adam Smith i not good at soldering, meanwhile my "NOAC cabinet" only needs some carpenter skills and cabling :D

What is the overall price on this? Rough estimate.
Awesome!
cool
Love the video and channel, arcades are awesome, I built a scaled up version of this out of an old mortal kombat cab and a pi3... put a kegerator in it. The arcaderator was born lol
LOL I love the idea of a kegerator right in an arcade cab!

I love this background music! Nice to see you hit 25k subs! yous deserve it Collin!
How can you play most console games when it only has 3 buttons? Anything Genesis when Sega released the 6 button controller and beyond has more then 3 buttons.
you should have used one of those colours are a base color.
Goat simulator !😊😊😊😊😊 I like that game
instead of buying wood and painting wouldn't i buy plastic lines?
Great video. For someone who is wanting to get into this kind of retro gaming, but has little experience working with electronics, would you recommend this project or should I start with something simpler?

Brandon Butler Thanks for the advice. I know what I'm getting for Christmas now :)
Here i thought this kit was going to be friendly for regular people lol
yeah I was hoping for that too lol
Do the pre built ones come with the PI and the software on it?
You still need to supply the Pi, but all you need to do is plug in the wiring and install the software (which is very quick).
ty
Can it run of raspberry pi zero w?
You can use a Zero 2 W at only slightly reduced performance. Some of the more hefty N64/PS1 era games are about where it hits its limit.
Should have at minimum 4 buttons. A B X Y. These were standard on older consoles.
i think that the lack of buttons is the real missed opportunity, this little thing looks like how it's made for fighting games, yet there are only 3 buttons
if you watch the review vid the standard is 6 buttons
Just cool..👍🏻
seems like a novelty.
it is perfect...
Glad I bought gameroomsolutions
ncie work
Hi. I love your video :) Cant wait for new one
Nice vid.
These kits are no longer available; he only sells the laser cut cabinet pieces as a kit.
How did you installed the games ?
just google for the game you want to download, and put free rom download after the game title
I wish someone would send me a kit to review for free lol, This thing looks awesome.
TIP: The color blob appearing in the top right of your display means that the raspberry pi is not getting enough power from the power supply.
It looks great and all, but only 3 buttons? that mean no fighting games (at least a great amount of them).
I'm making bigger ones more buttons cool lights art work one with two sides with two screens and controllers for two players. I live in the United States
but can it run doom?
Interesting, but would prefer something portable instead, they used to make those cabinets since the hardware was large (crt display, console, game, and coin box). Now the newer technology is much smaller in size and can be made more portable.
So... many... hairs on your arms! :o
Looks cool though.
Inside bead of glue doesn't do all that much but yellowish mess
That doesn't look too comfortable to play
"Comes with everything but the raspberry pi" wtf? why? it's $35 just include it.
Ccoolty they are probably not legally able to include the pi w it since it's not their product
Gotta get Frog Tape.
this is a good video. but u forget about coin hole. thats a good idea for ez money haha
Funny that the LCD controller board is bigger than the Raspberry Pi itself...
