I play Vendreads. They're pretty good as a Link and Synchro deck and their Ritual spells are honestly one of the best, as all of them can Ritual summon from the graveyard.
One under-appreciated feature that both Slayer and Battlelord have effects in which they can search *any* Ritual monster and *any* Ritual spell card; you can build creative decks that way.
Their main issue is you have to special summon their main deck monsters onto the field, which often costs resources from the gy. One card that I don't see played with Vendreads is Lich Lord, King of the Underworld, whose effect is not limited to a once per turn, which provides Vendreads tribute fodder. Zombie World also helps a lot (you can banish Diviner and Herald of the Arc Light).
I think the biggest issue with Vendreads is the Rituals have lackluster effects when on the field. Sure, Revendread prevents targeting and Chimera (often considered the worst of the Rituals) offers protection, but if you didn't use the Vendread main deck monsters as field tributes, you are often left without the ability to interact during your opponent's turn.
One solution is to have either a Vendread Ritual Monster *or* Vendread Continuous Spell that allows you to banish your opponent's zombie monsters from their graveyard instead of your own. This will allow Vendreads to be a pseudo Bystials, and be balanced out by the fact you have to run Zombie World, which is vulnerable to removal.

I actually play these guys on a pretty religious basis, both in TCG and in MD, and honestly I think they are one of the best non-competitive deck since they don’t run out of gas easily at all unless you just get a bad start. But if you wanted to make these guys a competitive there I think all that would be needed is a MD monster that gives the effect to make the monster ritual summoned with it immune to card destruction. They already have very consistent ways to get 10k+ dmg on the field, great ritual spells, a board wipe trap, Vendread Reorigin, and a great link monster. Now they just need that little push that’ll make them at least tier 3

I would say that the last support helped vendreads a lot, being able to make an untargetable, banish 1 monster and 1 s/t executor is much easier now.
The problem is still that this deck lacks swarming, which is weird for a zombie deck, and that its kinda slow.
This is a deck that can see some really good amount of play in duel links, even without skills specific for the deck, if only konami adds the bew support.
Heck, they could even make a skill that allows the rituals to gain the monster effects from anywhere, not just the field.
Its kinda like how triamids has a deck that flows well, but then theres the trap that banishes the cards instead of shuffling them into the deck for whatever reason.

This is definitely a case of Konami being too afraid to give Vendread strong support because of the zombie toolbox. Being forced to have the material on the field to give otherwise mediocre Ritual monsters halfway decent effects really forces this archetype to jump through so many hurdles when a normal deck can do better off of 1-2 card combos.

You should cover Dark Magician. It really only sees use as a side deck option (as a meme), has over 15 cards to support it but a pure deck doesn't necessarily place or place consistently in really any format. Targeted banish doesn't do much when most cards have protection from targeting and a number of archetypes use banish as a means of floating/ banish doesn't do anything against them and just about the same number of archetypes/ cards make use of nontargeting banish (ex. Metaphys Daedelus & Evenly Matched). Eternal Soul literally kills your Dark magician monsters. The archetype could be rogue but let's be honest, people playing it is playing it to meme. There's a ton of ritual support released around the beginning of the link era with megalith, vendread and the impcantations all being released within a few packs of eachother. Still using Vendread in Master Duel, and it's still good enough even before Ravenous and Scar was released.
Revendread Evolution was great, even if it pop your ritual at the end phase, the point is just to put your Slayer or Battlelord on the field, so you can link them into Savior and triggered their grave effect. Or even better, if you open with Diviner of Herald, you can Synchro Slayer and Diviner into Ultimaya.
Though the deck release time was terrible. Their initial release is during the era where things like Gouki U-Link, Summon Sorceress, and Firewall Loop exist, and three years later when it released the last support, the deck can only be 'Decently playable' because the game already evolved so far.

Vendread is also one of the first Archetypes to use Pre-Preparation of Rituals outside of it's intended purpose.
Pre-Preparation's intended effect is to search both a Ritual Monster and it's specific Ritual Spell, meaning it would support old Rituals (as these had Ritual Spells that only worked on 1 monster) while newer Rituals with their more generic Spells would need something else.
But Vendread was designed to ignore this, since all their ritual spells are generic for Vendreads, but 2 of them also have an extra effect that specifically lists a Vendread Monster.
Origin with an effect that only protects Revendread Slayer, and Ravenous with an effect that _Excludes_ Vendread Scavenger!
It's a very creative way to go about it, and I've found it amusing for years.

My main Deck in Master Duel is a zombie - deck that also contains some Vendread cards to support it.
I really like giving Houndhorde's effect to slayer - being able to banish one of your opponent's spell or trap cards per turn while also being protected by Revendread Origin is kinda nice.
Avendread Saviour is also quite nice. Makes it easier to get Zombie World on your Side of the field (by sending "Nekroworld Banshee" to the GY).You can also send Doom King Balerdroch to the GY for an even bigger debuff (-1600 ATK enables Saviour to beat over anything with 3000 ATK or less) and to get it on the field during the next Standby Phase (as long as there is a field spell on the field).
It might not be a good archetype on its own but some of the cards can be quite decent in generic zombie decks..

I'm curious as to if Vendreads would have been good or even a decent rogue option if it had come out a format or two earlier. A lot of these failed archetypes probably would have been strong if they had come out earlier than they had been. For all we know, this one could have been great if it came out with the first wave of Link Monsters. The banish effect could stop early Link Climbing, and popping spells and traps would have probably been a good call to hinder the enemy if they were playing something like Mirror Force to deal with Links.
It's just a shame that Vendreads have such an uphill battle going for them. It's appropriate, given the story of the archetype, but just making the main deck monsters restricted to only passing on those effects to Vendread Ritual Monsters probably would have been more than enough of a restriction to allow their effects to be passed on. Maybe this deck could be fixed with a new field spell that recurs the banished Vendreads for constant recycling, and maybe adding in some level manipulation so that they can be more effective in actually ritual summoning the cards.
But hey. At least the Vendreads are powerful in Master Duel's N/R format. That's gotta account for something.

Honestly, the one change that would fix the deck and make it competitive is just make main decks that are starters (similar to diviner or aluber). I've played the deck religiously in MD and it combos fine, but no summonable starters to add consistency is why the deck suffers, it's just basic deck design. Vendread practically just copied what some xyz decks do (hence the on the field restriction), but fails because no starters.

I am really hopeful that one day we will get another awesome ritual deck as it is my favorite form of summoning but with how much the design of rituals busts I'm not keeping my hopes up. Also I am really hopeful that the Ashened archetype turns out good, I'd love to see another "reference" archetype that is actually really viable.

The main issue with this archetype is that the materials need to be on the field to give the extra effects. Sure Mezuki, Book of Life, etc facilitate that a bit but it’s still super clunky. They need to either errata the cards or make retrains that grant the effects when they’re used as material regardless of where they are. They should also make a card similar to Nouvelles “At Table” so they can recycle monsters and ritual spells from banishment (ha ha! New keyword!)

Excavate debuted as a keyword when the Sylvans debuted. With more and more cards interacting with banished cards, out of play cards kinda needed a collective term. For example Pokemon calls where their banished cards go The Lost Zone

It's so frustrating that Vendread have so many unnecessary restrictions, that only exist to bloat the cards and make them worse than their contemporary decks.
But with Vendread should have come a ruling change. Ritual spells say Equal or Exceed the level of a monster but that's NOT WHAT IT DOES it actually means:
Equal but can exceed unless the extra levels are not needed.
To this day you can't 7 lv1 monsters to summon a lv6 even though logically you should be allowed to.
Also also every Vendread monster should have been lv3 it would have solved so many issues as long as they had nothing to do with exact levels since you would gain access to a certain rank 3 that recycles banished cards.

@@nsreturn1365 Scar is a good card I was talking more about how it was proof that Vendreads didn't need to Banish themselves if they used the revive effect.
In an imaginary world where Houndhorde and Revnants both had a discard cost to summon themselves from GY but didn't banish themselves when leaving the field they'd be _okay_ if they gave their inheritance of used for the summon of a Vendread anywhere and the inheritance wasn't OPT they'd have been amazing for their time since you make a ritual using them on field(or linking them off) then make a ritual by banishing them from GY and then the Vendread endboard would have upwards of 2-3 rituals that each banish a monster and a backrow for free at Quick Effect speed which honestly would have been fine for their time.

messed around with the vendread loaner during the theme chronicles event and it felt clunky. considering you need the monsters on the field to grant their effects to the ritual while the ritual spells let you use the graveyard and the monsters would banish themselves or others for meh at best effects. you want to play a ritual deck that messes with the graveyard just go drytron. Scar and ravenous felt like the only that were actually doing something.

Charge is the key. It is all the gas needed to make the deck work. I played against some of those Vendread players and I saw lines they didn't where them summoning Slayer with both banish effects would have put me in a hole wouldn't have recovered from. It is a hard deck to figure out though, so I get it. Once you realize Slayers gy effect is not once per turn, it becomes easier to see the lines and grab the right ritual spells.

Certainly feel like the biggest problem with Vandread is the banish aspect of the archetype. Like you said it took away resources without giving you enough of a benefit. Without a card that can seriously utilize the banished cards the entire archetype just feels like it revolves around shooting yourself in the foot to get what amounts to, imo, a wiffle ball bat.
