Due to the pressure of keeping Lincoln looking “fresh” during the funeral route, he was embalmed many times over. Essentially experts say mummified. It’s strange to think the trademark Lincoln we all know is probably still recognizable after all these years.

Fleetwood Lindlay was the last living person to view Lincoln’s face. Did so as a teenager in 1901 the last time the coffin was opened. The face was alabaster white, the eyebrows were missing but the face was most recognizable as that of Lincoln’s.
@@theRappinSpree Lincoln finally got his last resting place. I could imagine being moved so many times must've been a real headache for Lincoln. Well, at least he can't be moved anywhere else now, you know, with the coffin being encased in a cage encased in concrete. People might've thought Robert Lincoln went overkill on the last burial, but considering how many times THAT body was moved, I think a little prudence was indeed warranted.
It's very crazy knowing that when I was in there i was technically 10 feet away from such a historical figure.

Thank you for posting this. I have always wanted to go to Lincoln's Tomb and pay my respects to that great man, but since I am now disabled and am unable to make the trip, this is the next best thing.

I lived in walking distance of the tomb, I walked there often each time in awe, each time impressed, each time learning something new. He was a great man and awesome president.

It is an impressive monument to an impressive man. I live not far from there and some of my family are buried not far from his grave. I wonder how different this country would have been if he had lived and had helped to guide the country through his final term in office and beyond. I think we would be living in a better world.

What I admire most about Lincoln was his battle against depression! Lincoln and Churchill both suffered from very deep bouts of depression. Both had a lot to be depressed about the American Civil War and WWII and the bombings of London! Yet they both seemed to have adjusted and went on to become men we honor and respect! Churchill said painting helped him deal with depression. Lincoln's dry sense of humor probably saved him!
Yes and Churchill saw his ghost at the White House.
It was unfair that he had his life taken away from that horrendous assassination. He was a great leader who saved this country from being dissolved. He will never be forgotten and we will always have his spirit with us. RIP Abraham Lincoln

I don't know how rubbing the nose of the statue of Lincoln can be considered lucky...Lincoln owned the original nose, and it wasn't very lucky for HIM!
I have visited the site a few times in my life and each time I am in awe of what I'm looking at. The man saved the Union. They have also preserved the old town back to Lincoln's day and is also worth visiting. But don't miss the Lincoln Library in Springfield. It's wonderful, with many things to view about Lincoln.

@@richardsokolis4668 my guess is that what he means, right? Because while there’s a few blocks around Lincoln’s Springfield home that has been preserved, he definitely sounds like the “old town” is New Salem.
I must add that I believe the OP is speaking of the Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library. You can go to the Lincoln Library but it’s just a...library. Great place. But you’ll sorely letdown if you go thinking there’s a lot to see about Lincoln!! 😂. The presidential museum is a handful of blocks away and it is fantastic. It was designed by Disney Imagineers. If that gives you any indication what this place is like! It’s wonderful.

I remember standing before the headstone over 50 years ago. I was 11 years old then, and for the first time i started to realize that Lincoln was more then a name in my history book, or just the legend I heard. This was once a flesh-an-blood man. I changed my perspective of him. As I studied his life over these past decades, I saw his humanity; imperfect, flawed, suffering bouts of depression, yet rising above to save the Union, and finally officially breaking the the bonds of slavery. I wonder how the last 150 years of our history would have changed had he lived. I also realized our mortality, and how brief a time we have tho make difference for the betterment of our country.
Some of my ancestors are buried in this cemetery.... I love coming here, so much respect.
I drove from California to New York and back for my 50th birthday. I took my time. I made sure I visited this spot because Abraham Lincoln embodies every great ideal that our country once represented. I was truly moved and humbled to stand at his grave. I hope we can find our way back to being a country that reaches for goodness and kindness and equality and greatness of spirit again. Remember friends, vote in November.

I have studied and admired Abraham Lincoln all of my life. I have read over 90 books on him. I took notes the entire time and compared "facts" and then researched to find the truth.
There is this old question people like to ask friends. If you could invite five people to a meal with you......dead or alive...……….who would you invite? My answer is Lincoln five times. That's if they allow me that answer. I would give both of my legs and both of my arms to sit and have a three hour conversation with him.
The area of his death is where I like to stop because it makes me mad and sad! He was, in my opinion unquestionably the greatest American who ever lived. No, to me, he was the greatest man who ever lived. I know, people can jump up and argue about it or throw insults. Fine! I don't care. That's what he is to me and what he ALWAYS will be to me!
The last place or item associated with him I saw was his tomb. It's so sad to think about. I get mad because I know he deserved better. He gave everything for his country! Being President was not heaven on earth for him. The stress ate him from the inside out. A civil war, death, the torture of having to watch his son die a SLOW miserable death of over 50 days! Then watch another die, his mom die a slow terrible death as well as two grandparents! He watched a nation tear itself apart and fight to pull it back together! He knew his death was coming. He knew he was going to be assassinated BUT he never stopped!! He never quit working! And he was MASTERFULL and saving our country.
To visit his tomb would just be anger and sadness all over again I thought. I finally got myself to go. I went into the chamber, down the hall and stood in front of the place his body was laid to rest. As I started to cry my friend tapped me on the shoulder and said look. I turned around to see the tomb in the back wall. One for his wife. One for each son less Robert. I looked for a second and I actually smiled! I didn't get it before. But I got it then. It hit me like a ton of books. His story does not have the sad ending I have always attached to it. I saw it in a new way. Lincoln did all the things he needed to. He committed himself giving his health and life in the process. The day he died ………..wasn't sad. I think as he sat at the theatre God looked down on him and said "you have done enough! I am proud of you. It is time to ease your pain and reward you with your place in heaven where his 2 sons are waiting for him! God did not let him suffer the ills of the world anymore. Instead, he saved him right away. He eased his pain right away. As I stood there looking at Lincolns family member markers I understood that he was with his family. They were all together. He finally got to be with the 2 sons who deaths plagued him! I was looking at the marker of a man who has been in heaven since his death enjoying his family and perfect happiness. He was forced to live and suffer until he was 85 years old! He left the world early BECAUSE of what a great man he was!

When I saw Lincoln the movie in theatres I wept like a baby. I couldn't stop. Im a black woman and to think what he did for the slaves makes my heart feel so much love. He truly sacrificed his life to unify the country and end slavery.
I have about 25 books on him. And I hope to get a lot more. He is the closest thing this country has ever had to a King. He is a martyr and he deserves to be.

This English woman has the greatest respect for one of the greatest men who ever lived. Abraham Lincoln is without doubt the finest President of America, he bore the weight of the world on his shoulders never once faltering in his service to his beloved country. I hope one day to pay my respects in person, and just stay a little while remembering what he achieved, his wisdom and tenacity is sorely missed,

I visited a couple years ago in mid-summer on a weekday when hardly anyone was at the cemetery and no one else at the monument. I was inside and had it all to myself in the silence. Its one of those few places Ive ever been where even the air felt heavy inside the tomb. You could feel the sense of being near greatness....true greatness. Not cliche'd greatness in the arts or industry. But in humanity and reconciliation that affected the course of world history. Ill never forget it. Great visit. The library is also fantastic.

I visited the site a couple of years ago while on business in Springfield and there is a real atmosphere of reverence around that tomb. I plan on revisiting this site again this fall. Thanks for posting.

Is it a widely known story that Lincoln’s body was stolen around
15-20 years after his death. The robbers broke open his vault but couldn’t get the casket out of the vault. One of the robbers turned snitch and had warned the police of their plot to kidnap Lincoln’s body. He gave the prearranged signal and during the ensuing gun battle the robbers got away. But they were arrested soon after.
His body was moved so many times during the first 20 years of his death. The first tomb was so badly built that his casket was moved into the basement of the tomb where workers stored lumber and other things. A shallow hole was dug to put Lincoln’s casket in and since you could tell something was buried there they covered the ground with used lumber and other items to hide the casket better. Lincoln was kept in the room for years until the current tomb was built.
If I remember correctly Mary Lincoln died during this time and her casket was placed next to Lincoln in this store room.
The only people that knew of this arrangement was the men on the Cemetery Committee and Robert Todd Lincoln. The committee was formed to handle the construction and maintenance of the tomb. They notified Robert every time they did something to the President and casket. It was early 1900’s before the new and better built tomb was finished and the day they moved the caskets from their old location to the new tomb the committee on their own decided to open Lincoln’s casket and looked at the great man one last time. They said he looked like he was asleep since he received so many embalming treatments on the very long train trip that he decomposed very little. However his skin color changed. I can’t recall the exact color they mentioned. This was due to the skin reacting to the many embalming doses.
To stop any chance ever again in the future of someone trying to steal his remains Lincoln is not inside of the stone sarcaughagus
(sorry-spelling???) that you walk by inside the tomb. His body and casket is 10’ below and was covered in 10’ of cement.
President Lincoln had a very restless death for about the first 35-40 years after his death.
Do you know what’s the fascination to try so hard to steal his body?
His face was covered with red and blue dots, a mystery until someone recalled that a US flag was placed over his body, it had rotted away leaving only small dots of red and blue cloth.
The thieves were from a ring of counterfeiters whose fellow was caught counterfeiting nickels. They intended to hold Lincoln's body for ransom. The ransom being the release of their friend. This is when the Secret Service added presidential security to their original treasury duties.

The trip to Springfield and to his tomb is so well worth the trip. If you get the chance go to Lincoln's boyhood home in Indiana, about 250 miles away. His birth mother is buried there.

Wow. I've visited the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, and it is awe-inspiring. This is a great memorial, too, to what I think is our greatest President. Lincoln espoused the hopes and dreams of middle America. I grew up in Ohio and his influence was very profound even on us. My favorite Lincoln quote (there are so many) is "Tis better to remain silent and thought a fool than to speak up and remove all doubt."

In high school we ran a Cross country meet every year in the park immediately being this tomb. It was an annual tradition to visit and pay our respects.
His tomb/casket was opened during its last move to the current tomb and several people were allowed to view the body and one of those people was a 13 year old son of one of the persons there... this man, Fleetwood Lindley died 31 Jan 1963 but was interviewed three weeks prior to his death. He said, "Yes, his face was chalky white. His clothes were mildewed. And I was allowed to hold one of the leather straps as we lowered the casket for the concrete to be poured. I was not scared at the time but I slept with Lincoln for the next six months." Mr. Lindley was 75 when he died and 13 when he had viewed the body. He had been the only child to do so. Mr. Lindley was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery not far from Lincoln's Tomb.

Thank you for posting this video. I live in England 🏴 so I may never visit in person. It caught my eye because I have just read ‘Team of Rivals’. Rewatching the 2013 film ‘Lincoln’ benefitted, in terms of understanding, from having read that book.

He was originally buried behind that monument. if you had gone a little farther down the park past this monument you would have seen the original burial site/tomb in the hillside. i hope you were able to see all the other various sites in Springfield, Lincoln related!! Its a great place to visit!!!
That has to be the most incredible beautiful tomb I have ever seen
it is so disappointing and so surprising to me to see so many people just walk around and not just STOP and really read and look at the schuphers, but just walk though it all, like it is just another park, and learn NOTHING of such a great man. I Live in Upper NOrtheast Illinois and wish I could make the drive down to see all this and get photographs of all this, knowing that Gov. Oglesby, whom did a lot of the planning of his ole friend after death, and took care of a lot of the burial, is related to my husband, so to have the history in our family and that connection to President Lincoln, even though he may NOT be a ancestor, but to have him touch the lives of some of our ancestors whom back at that time, Knew him.
When I watched the footage of Mr Rogers crypt I had chills for a minute and sensed his angelic spirit..this LOVE. Now watching this footage, Im overcome not only by the beauty of Pres Lincoln's final resting place..but those statues look like they come to life at night 😅 but anyways the energy I feel from this place/his energy is this: HONOR, DIGNITY, INTEGRITY. What an amazing historic humble important determined upright man!

Good video I've lived in Springfield my whole life been in that tomb many times. One fact that most people don't know is that Oak Ridge Cemetery is the 2nd most visited cemetery in the country after Arlington. Theirs obviously more Lincoln stuff to see and some non-Lincoln stuff here always glad for visitors to our city. Welcome.

His first resting place as down the hill. Not the back side of the structure. When you walk down the hill you will see the spot and there is a sign stating that was his first resting place.
Untill men tried to steal him for ransom. .I read he was still intact & recognized as Lincoln when they put him in his new tomb.

This place has always been kool through my life. Growing up a few blocks away. I know not nice but was awesome back in the 60s&70s when I was a teen. Great place to party at night. Hey I was a teenager.partied in his house at night when a friend was night watchman.

I have watched the documentary about stealing Lincoln's body and it was very interesting to know the journey he had before finally being entombed where he is now. They showed scenes of this place in the show, but not so much in detail as you have showed us in this video. Even just watching you are struck with awe and reverence being in the final resting place of a great American and his family. Thanks again for sharing

Very cool to see how the bronze is worn on those spots from the millions of people rubbing them for luck.

They say Lincoln was very close to his son they called Willie who died while at the white house. It hurt him very bad and he was distraught. Looking at the dates of all his children though it all makes sense. His first son that died was 4 years old and died the same year that Willie was born. He probably attached his self a lot to Willie after loosing his first son.
Well the first son they lost. Not his eldest son.
:: Lincoln was so distraught that he would go the vault Willie was buried in and open the casket and sit next to the coffin for hours. So said. After the Presidents death Willie’s casket was put on the train next to the President’s casket for the trip to Illinois.

I remember watching CSPAN and they were visiting an historic cemetery in Baltimore and they showed John wilkes Booth's grave and visitors had left the stone covered with Lincoln pennies.
I live about 2 mi from there I paid my respect to that man a few times in my life rub that nose I just think he wouldn't like what's going on today he tried to make this a more perfect country we're not perfect sorry Mr President
