Lou Reed earned the title of the King of New York if you ask me :) He was a poet in the most raw sense. The Velvets were a foundation of punk rock, in the sense that it's meaningful music made with very little, and they properly represented authenticity. Lou was the antithesis of the smiling pop star, to put it that way lol. John Cale, as well. Just real to the core, even brutally so. 'Heroin', 'I'm Waiting for The Man' and 'Rock and Roll' are musts if you haven't hit those yet.
The Velvet Underground were probably the most influential American band of all time. You mentioned bands they influenced. Someone once said the first VU album sold 1000 copies, and everyone who bought it started a rock band. 'Candy Says' and 'What Goes On' are also good tracks from the 3rd VU album.
Guitarist singer/songwriter Jonathan Richman was infatuated with the 'Velvet Underground' in the late '60's while in N.Y.C. Jonathan's music was somewhat inspired by The Underground. "Let Her Go into the Darkness" released by Johnathan back in 1995 was featured in the romantic comedy film 'There's Something About Mary' from 1998. Basically everybody is influenced by The Velvets, even if they don't know it! About 60 years ahead of their time.
