Here on my channel, I am renovating a 250 year old stone cottage on my property in Normandy, France. By using traditional, low-waste and off-grid methods, I'm aiming to keep the charm and character of this old building, and turn it into a furnished, finished home for family whilst keeping environmental impact as low as possible. There will also be content on living in France, visiting beautiful rural places, hunting for antiques, gardening and more! Hit subscribe if you would like to keep up with my journey, and hit the notification bell to be alerted when we go LIVE where we have a first viewing of the video as it is published with a live chat so I can answer all your questions! See you in Sean's World.
It’s great to have that extra pair of hands when you need them! It’s also wonderful that Sean is passing on his extensive construction knowledge to his son. Well done you two!👍
Tom did a nice job - it’s great to have sons and daughters to lend a hand
I envy Tom to be able to work along side his dad. Great memories being built.
Good on you Tom, looking after Dad and Mum.
You’re a good son Tom, helping your Dad out. And a good job you did.
Hope your ankle heals quickly, Sean! 😮
Thanks
Your apprentice did very well, you can be very proud of Tom. A spiral staircase look good and take less space in the cottage. Have a healing, relaxing kind of a weekend. 🙏❤️
Iam very proud
Tom seems very well equipped to fill in when needed! Always nice to see someone learning and sharing an experience with their child or parent.
Well done Tom
Nice to see Father and Son working together....you are a good son Tom. Also a nice teaching time for Tom to learn from Dad. 💝
Love the father and son duo working on the cottage! Doing very good, Tom!
What a good son, Tom - you make me smile 😄
If that stairway is intended for daily use, you DO NOT want a spiral staircase. If you have to move anything bigger than a bag of groceries up the stairs, you will regret it.
Love seeing Tom doing some work with you Sean.❤️❤️❤️
S😮Ean, heal properly. Thank you Tom for helping !!!!!
Being a superviser is a job too. As long as Tom is there you should have him plant another rock garden so you don't run out of rocks to rebuild the walls. So you can teach a new dog old tricks.
Sometimes you roll with the flow. Great apprentice, What a lucky dad.
Thanks Tpm... helping your father❤
A spiral stairs would be so cosy! The fleur de lis ⚜️ you found in England is perfect for a French cottage! That will look lovely! Good eye! Great find!
Oh yes!
Your son did a great job. It’s awesome teaching your son how things were done years ago. .
💕Tom will be a jack of all trades soon💕
Tom has a master builder to learn from.
Great to see you help your Dad out Tom, definitely earned some brownie points 👏👏👏👏
Almost sneezed when you were sweeping up. Glad you and Tom wore masks!
You’ve got a good Stand in with Tom helping you Seán while you put your foot up and rest it.
Priceless! Learning such a useful skill from your Da! What lovely memories made as well. You are a wonderful son Tom!
Spirals do look lovely, but can be really limiting in the ability to get furniture etc. to the upstairs.
I will put in a trap door
Cool. Almost a tree house.
@@Seans_World I wouldn’t have thought of a trap door! This I’ve GOT to see!
Its always good to have extra help! Get well soon Sean, watch your step.❤
You should be proud of your apprentice, Tom did a great job 👏🏻. I hope your ankle feels better soon 😊
Good job Tom. You are an apt apprentice.
It’s obviously more work, but I’m so glad you are “preserving the character”. Things don’t have to be “perfect” to be perfectly beautiful👍
We love seeing Tom! 😀
Tom is lucky to learn a bit of the trade from you. Learning is never wasted, and you know a fair bit! He has a good attitude, too!
Good job Tom! Sean hope your ankle heals up quickly! 🙏
Learning to Plaster…on camera…😱 I’ll sit out, thank you! You are doing great, Tom!
If this cottage is for paying guests think about Luggage being carried upstairs (spiral staircase), don’t forget workers compensation
A spiral staircase is a good idea, but just make sure you have your bed and whatever furniture you want up there first. It's impossible to get anything up after it's installed. Ask me how I know......😮
Tom is such a fantastic son. Good job Tom and Sean get your foot elevated and ice it. xx
Yes he is, thank you 😊
Tom you are a good son!
What an awesome apprentice you have Sean! Well done Tom! Hope you ankle heals quickly. Take care.
Thanks
Time for some rest for the weekend💙💙
Great work duo. Hope Tom can help more often.👍🇦🇺
Sean, spiral staircase will fit the space and look fabulous - but there is danger involved that needs considered. Especially as you get older. Why does this scare me? Because my sister had a spiral staircase in her tiny home, which worked for decades. But as she got older, with arthritis in her knees and hands, it because less safe. She fell down it, at age 68, broke her back in 3 places, and died a day later. Please seriously consider who will be going up & down!
Tom is a quick learner and a good skill for him to learn. Glad he was available to help you while your ankle heals.
Tom did a good job . I think a spiral stairs will look good ❤
“Hey mate hows it goin” … you could pass as an Aussie Tom. Good to see ya from Australia.
Glad Tom could help you out. Handsome young man. Prayers for your foot to heal quickly.
A very traditional cottage might be better off with traditional stairs - also much easier to get furniture upstairs.
Really love to see the progress looking good guys.
I have a spiral staircase, and it is a nuisance. Its diameter and curvature restrict the width and length of what you can take up and down it.
Remember if you get a spiral staircase it is difficult to get bigger items upstairs.
Lovely to see Tom helping his dad❤ - rest up Sean and look forward to your next Video 😀
Like father, like son, gotta have that cuppa tea. 🤣🤣
Tom is a big help for you! Praying for your recovery
We love our American metal screens on our windows 😊 keeps out the bugs and the birds🐦 and cats in 🐈
May the Lord heal you and protect you 🙏✝️
Wow that extra set of hands will help out so much! The place is looking amazing!
That really is tricky. Sean makes it look so easy. 😂
love that window treatment with the brick surround.
Father and son working together. Awesome. Tom, you did great. Sean, I hope your foot feels better soon. Ice and elevation and some anti inflammatory. Ace wrap may help too. Sorry, that is the nurse in me still. If it continues for a few days go see a doctor. Keep us informed. We will worry about you now. I am a bad worrier.
Spiral stairs are most logical . Even if you can't afford wrought iron, get cheaper metal Spiral with.wood treads , then paint the metal several coats of black matte metal paint & it will fit your style. 😊
When you and Tom said " great quality" it reminded me of the old comedy show from back home years ago. The tailer always used to say " never mind the quality feel the width" lol. Great work Tom you have a good dad and a great teacher. It's good to learn by doing too. He's a good lad Sean give him a big hug.
Another great video! I really enjoy seeing Sean and Tom working together 💝🙏! Hope you continue to mend and we'll see you in the next one! Hope everyone from Sean's World 🌎🌍🌏🌟 has a wonderful weekend! Greetings from North Carolina 🌄!
I hope so too!
Ditto from South Carolina😊
My Friend, just half to remember, were not a Young as we used to be. 😂 It's about time you get a little help. 😊
Tom hello! Sean hello and take care of the ankle😊
How about using the underside of the stairs for storage for the kitchen? It gives you a good staircase leading upstairs as well as storage which there never is enough of.
Sean - you might want to get your Son's take on what to do about the staircase and maybe he has some ideas...
A nice looking helper too, like is Dad, :) At least he's trying, I have to give him credit he tries. Take care of your ankle, enjoy the weekend.
Jasmine, I'm glad you kept all that banter between your dad & Tom in the video!! Funny stuff!! My dad & brother used to do the same & it made for some great times & wonderful memories!! Good job, Sean & Tom! Such a nice video, father & son working & enjoying your time together!! 🇺🇸
Why change stairs? You already have privacy& straight up path, &tiny area under steps. So nice to walk down into kitchen and not to front door.
Spiral steps limits furniture/clothes/accessories movement...Will be cramped.?. Orig builder already solved that...leave steps to keep front
door draft going upstairs...the builder was pretty smart, already...Loved watching Sir Tom work as Newby. Great supervising, Hercules..Hope your ankle mends with speed...Loved the bird in the window, too...Happy weekend!
I'm from the west riding part of England, living in the US. It's been a while since I've heard the term "sods law", It made me smile and suffer a little nostalgia. I love the US but England will always be home.
Not a fan of spiral staircase. So hard to get much needed items up. Yes space saving but nothing quite like the staircase you have with a little sanding and stain
Tom you did a great job😊
I like Tom's sense of humour-- a lot like my sons' (two). Your whole family is "brilliant"--an English expression I learned from a colleague here in Canada. She also used it in a sarcastic way occasionally, but that is definitely not my tone here. My joy is watching (and sometimes helping too) my sons and husband tackling a job--big or small--together. It also brings me joy to see others doing the same.
Thank you! 😃
One problem with a spiral staircase, how do you get a bed, matresses and furniture up to the next floor.
Iam going to put a trap door in
I noticed you don’t have screens on your windows. I would think a lot of insects would fly in without them . 🤷♀️
Hi Sean and Sam from Wisconsin! Love the "catio" you built for the kitties. I am enjoying your channel very much.
Much appreciated
Tom looks a lot like Sam and he appears to be very tall!! ❤
He is
Dynamic duo the apprentice has done well offer him a job thanks guys great video ❤❤
Get better ankles are not fun
Tom is getting good at it😊😊😊
Nice work today boys. Tom for being a novice at this you did yourself proud. Sean make sure you take care. Now that spring is here we all start pushing a little to hard wanting to get things done. It'll still be there tomorrow.
I forgot to mention the ironwork for the door. Great find. It's exactly what I would have wanted.
Thanks Ruth
The experience should help Tom with understanding stone buildings a little better for his real estate career. I’ve always felt estate agents should have some hands on experience, so they can sell houses better informed. I’d like to see Tom some more helping you, more for his benefit rather than yours. Plus I’ve seen him become more confident which is great. There’s much to be gained through honest effort. Great move!.I enjoy both of your channels.
Well done Tom. Heal soon Sean.
A spiral staircase would look charming in the cottage & add to the aesthetic.
A little help when needed is good someone to keep you company as well. Try arnica cream for the ankle Martin and Pleasance has a good one. Sure it will be good skills for Tom in case he ever decides to do a project himself :)
Sean nice to see Tom helping you out, sorry to hear about your foot, I understand the pain as I'm having trouble with my foot also. Hugs Kathy USA 🇺🇸
Sean, no more dancing the night away!
😂😊😅😮
Make some measurements before considering the spiral staircase. It seems like it would be very difficult to get a mattress or any other type of furniture up that type of staircase.
Trap door would be installed
I was thinking spiral too. Seen some made from wood with open steps and banister inside center of spiral.
That was great guys! Good support with Dad and son....good family.
Nicely paced tutorial! Lovely to see you two working together, passing skills along. Thank you.
Our pleasure!
Good use of the plastering trowel there Sean.😊😂 when you used it as a dustpan. Nice
Good job on the plastering. Hope your ankle heals soon!
Thank you!
Thank you for passing on your amazing wealth of knowledge
My pleasure!
Hello. Have you considered making stairs with a landing? Perhaps opening near where you have then a landing halfway down and turn left with stair floor landing facing fireplace coming down. You could keep it open or enclosed for a closet creating an entryway and gives you another wall for kitchen on opposite side. May also stop wind coming right in when door opens.
Maybe a U or L shaped staircase with a small ledge in the middle ??
You have a good helper.❤
Definitely
😊Well done Tom!
Yes well done 👏 Tom
So sorry you hurt yourself!😢
Have you thought about reversing the stairs 🤔Putting the bottom of the stairs by the door then you could have a cupboard under the stairs for coats and shoes. Just a thought. The spiral stairs are decorative but not practical. So nice to see father and son working together...teaching and learning new skills❤️😍
Hi Sean and Tom, so sorry about your ankle Sean, Tom you did an amazing job, filling in for your dad. Well done. Love from N.Y.
Nice job Tom 👍🤗 hope Sean rested his foot a lot & it heals soon 👍🤗 ☕🍰☕🍰
Love Sue ❤❤❤🇬🇧❤❤❤
Yes, thank you
Excellent job Tom,Sean your guidance was also on point. Another interesting video, have a restful weekend.
Good job Tom!
