Panama's Untouchables: Exiles at Home | From Colon to Rio Abajo

  • In this one, we will travel back to Panama to explore the history of Afro Antilleans in Panama. Originally invited to build the canal, early migrants from the Caribbean were responsible for so much of its development. Despite structural challenges, the once thriving community held ethnic enclaves on both sides of the canal at Colon and Rio Abajo. In this video, we will explore how this population was systematically undermined by their own government.

Yes , Haitian Konpa has been big in Panama since the 70's... So much so that world famous Konpa band Tabou Combo even created a song for them called "PANAMA QUERIDA"

Thank you so much for this brother. You’re telling my family’s story. Came from Jamaica to Panama to work on the railroads. Caribbean creole in Panama is being lost sadly as the older generations start to die. My grandma is 100% Panamanian but her first language was English/Creole. Didn’t learn Spanish until she was much older

Whoah. When I was in Costa Rica in the early 90's, the music we'd know today as reggeaton was mostly associated with Panama and a singer named Gabi. But what I didn't know until I listened to this is that it had to do with the migration of West Indians to Central America, and then this music became viral both in Latin America and the US.

Yes, Haitians are surely Afro Antilleans but they didn't go to Panama with significant numbers..... Meanwhile, Bajans and Jamaicans did..... The connection to Dancehall and Reggae is an act of reconnecting with their familial root. Whereas Kompa and that connection is a little bit different....

The first thing. I look at in foreign countries. Are the kids' faces. Rich USA kids are not as happy as Panama kids. I hear the kids still pray in schools they are not prey. Well done, Panama. I am a poor man. I am going to find a way to get there.

@@KeenanLambert198 I understand but it's just racism that's prevalent across all of north and South America. You don't need a new paradigm. What happened in Panama is comparable and equivalent to what happened to black people in the US or Brazil or Mexico or even the UK etc
