  • In this video we take you through the entire process of conserving and restoring an antique advertisement for Merchant's Gargling Oil.
The piece is cleaned and undergoes a gelatin resizing treatment, which flattens the piece and adds sizing back into the paper making it more durable. The advertisement then is restored using fully reversible mediums.
Merchant’s Gargling Oil is “a Liniment for Man and Beast,” a catch-all salve first produced by George W. Merchant, a druggist, in 1833. Merchant’s Gargling Oil was intended to treat burns, scalds, rheumatism, flesh wounds, sprains, bruises, lame back, hemorrhoids or piles, toothache, sore throat, chilblains, and chapped hands. The Merchant business was successful enough to produce a promotional line of almanacs, songbooks, and stamps. The Gargling Oil could be found on shelves, along with other fine Merchant’s products, until 1928, when the Merchant factory in Lockport, New York, caught fire and burned to the ground. Today Merchant leaves behind a formidable body of advertisements and miscellanea.

Truly amazing! I could watch your videos all day. I read the other comments about changing music and doing a voice over. I wanted to chime in and say I love these the way they are. Thank you for a wonderful glimpse into your work. Fantastic job.

Just wondering about those clear protective covers that enable you to flip the piece -- do you clean them, too, between the initial steps or is that not necessary because so little dirt clings to them? Thank you for sharing your process, it's very informative!

Would love to have accompanying voice over detailing the process and though process a bit more in detail vs the on screen text.

Love the videos. Can I make a plea to lose the music. Just use the sped up ambient sound a la Jimmy Diresta.
