RE cigarrettes. I know this is an old video, so its unlikely either grey or brady will see this, but I think the thing about having only one puff from each cigarrette is not because the first puff is the best, but because re-lighting an old cigarrette tastes bad.
This reply will also be super not seen as its super late to the party, but the first puff of a fresh cigarette isnt the best because it tends to be too hot from the flame from the lighter.
The Internet is a strange place. Here I am writing a comment on something uploaded about a year ago. Most likely it will never be read by anyone. Anyway, I started listening to this podcast in August 2016 on the recommendation of my son. I really enjoyed it. It was fun, intelligent and different. I have been catching up on it and is leaving this comment as a message to other catcher-upers. As said I really enjoyed it at first but I must say that it is getting harder to listen to. Why? Ads, is why. I hate ads. I almost never watch commercial TV any more. Chrome+AdBlock takes care of RUclips ads and Netflix + HBO gives ad-free movies. This podcast is now interrupted 3 times (or more) by stupid ads. It breaks the flow and forces me to try to fast-forward over it. I understand that this is a business but I would prefer to have either ads or Patreon. Forcing your listeners to hear ads and then asking for patrons does not pass my smell-test. One ad at the start of the podcast, OK, I can live with that. But three in the middle.... Naehh. Sam Harris on his Waking Up podcast is running no ads and I am supporting him monthly. Again, I understand this is a business, but please stop complaining about RUclips wanting more ad-revenue when you are doing the same thing. It's a shame really. I have enjoyed it and will continue to follow up, but if I ever get to 'the top' and can follow in real time remains to see. If the ratio of content to ads keeps going in this direction I will most likely bail on it. Grey is also sounding more and more like an Apple Fan Boy. I seems like he is hellbent on owning a duplicate of every Apple Product on the planet :) Why not just get Apple to sponsor the show and be over with it. I like Brady's and Grey's videos and this pod has been very good (mostly) and I do hope it will not get any more commercial than it is now. So basically I am hoping that I can change the content of future videos (that have already been made). Shrödinger would understand I think.
On the subject of smoking; in my opinion the the first 3/4th of a cigarette is the best part, I rarely smoke in stress however and cannot speak for those.
I'm just now catching up with the podcast so I'm pretty late but... Lagniappe is used in south Louisiana pretty often actually. In Cajun French, its a very common word, and we use it to just mean "a little something extra". Many things can be lagniappe. We also use it as an expression really. Like "oh, that's lagniappe". As to say: "oh, that's extra; I don't really need it but it's nice to have"
I'm on the side of CPG with the broadening of the meaning of a word. That concept of redefining words for "modern uses" or inventing words for things that already are named (e.g. both effects on one word: selfie = selfportrait => picture with you in it, regardless of other content or even if you actually took the photo yourself). Don't take things out of their place just because you think they are neat. Leave the flower in the meadow so the meadow is one with flowers. If you like flowers, get seeds and grow em where you like them to be. Same goes with words. They have a meaning and we don't need hip folk to misuse them just to be special.
Except in the case of lagniappe (to which I assume you're referring) it actually does just mean "a little something extra", and the wikipedia page in question has clearly pre-narrowed the definition
Both grey and Brady are correct about there stances on which puff of a cigaret is best and the reason this can easily be this way is it is due to the mood or more appropriately the brain state one finds themselves in while par taking in the activity so rather each conclusion you guys came to is equally valid, I myself can certainly attest to.
usually the cigarette degrades in quality after the half way point or sometimes 2 thirds in and the first puff is usually the a little bit fresher and easier to take in and you can see how fresh your cigarette is by just looking at the back of the filter as it goes more yellow and brown but non filter smoking is a hole other story which i have no experience
But the thing is, it is a perfect example of utilizing technology. It's like playing a fireplace on tv. You want to do it once a year. You are not going to buy a fireplace for once a year. Now you don't have to: technology! Plus it looks nice, much cleaner than numbers.
The sweet spot is a couple of drags in, it's not usually fully burning during the first drag, but the more the tobacco smoke pervades the cigarette, the more tar you inhale, which, in my opinion, taints the cigarette.
The thing about self-service checkouts, for me, is they allow me to do some VERY complicated payment splitting. I often have cash that I just want to get rid of at the first opportunity. If I have £4.50 in cash and spent £7.00 in Sainsbury's, I might put in £4.50 in cash, £2.50 in Nectar points, and then pay the £1.00 by card. I'd feel VERY self-conscious and get a bit confused trying to explain that transaction to a human staff member. Also, they've largely supplanted Coinstar, because you can pour your change into these machines, and get 100% of the value out of it.
I can also imagine, in retail, that as long as you're not on commission, then having a bit of chit chat makes your actual work lighter. Instead of scanning products all day and working a cash register (who uses cash in 2020 anyway?), you're breaking the day into smaller chunks and having little 2 minute conversations in between customers.
Grey just doesn't get the American south. But it was very similar in Wales and Ireland when I was there to the way Grey described NC. It seems the areas people call less civilized and backward in the civilized world it happens. Emojis were invented to fill all the extra spots on the keyboard when they made the Japanese keyboard in ascii
The most recent time I've used one (was grocery shopping with my mom, of course) there was an issue where weight shifted on the "bagging area" and it also got confused with the number of items (that may have been our fault) and in trying to figure out what was going on, we wound up having to spend more time with the person nearby helping us than had we gone to a regular line with a person trained to use the machinery. That's the entire reason I don't like using them. It happens every time, no matter how I do things. :T
First puffs of cigarettes are not the best I'd say (although I've met people who for some reason love lighting cigarettes and giving the first puff), but relighting an old cigarette is quite disgusting (even if you're a smoker). The end of the cigarette is also something that many smokers don't enjoy, and it's quite common to see smokers just smoke around half of a cigarette (if they have the money, naturally). Plus I'm guessing that most of the peers of a millionaire would frown upon someone relighting an old cigarette.
I'm sure someone has mentioned this but *facepalm* Brady, there is also a level of social pressure and/obligation in being aware someone needs to be somewhere right here, right now. The likelyhood of you comfortably continuing a story knowing the person you're talking to's alarm has gone off is far less likely than being unaware and the individual gaging the urgency in which they must leave.
not at all, I've never been pressured to smoke by my friends, I simply enjoy smoking. Nobody I know got a cigarette from a friend without requesting it prior to being offered one
1:04:34 re: human interaction From Podcast Land, and living mostly in my own ecosystem for a year now, I can confidently say that interacting with humans in settings like grocery stores has really boosted my mood. I still don't like interaction, I just realize that small bouts of interaction are helpful in pandemic season.
Best puff of a cigarette. Id say the third or forth. I am a more casual smoker. Because the first and second more so is the kinda bitter burn into your lungs and throat. But after that I adjust and it becomes more pleasing. Now that may be because I am a more casual smoker. Like 1 every couple of days. And I also smoke cigarillos. So my opinion may be different from a smoker who smokes maybe 5 to 10 smokes a day.
I love how grey was aginst lanyap becuse nobody was buying vids but last podcast he was wondering if peps will demand better content prodution becuse they think they are paying for it. lol

Well I was talking about tobacco because I thought that's what they were talking about. But with bud the first puff's usually the best. Didn't know smoking opium was still a thing. I tend to think of the late 1800's when I think of opium. That or The Knick.
Wow I always stand near far left field. In baseball, and kickball, and softball. I try to avoid participation, because I have to take Physical Education, because it's take that or take band or chorus and I am not singing or playing an instruments in front of people ever. No way. I hardly talk in front of unfamiliar people. Definitely not sing or play an instrument. I could do it play by myself not too horribly, but freak out so much about other people being there, so I would mess up...
That sounds like the same logic I would apply if I had to play a sport. Well, track isn't a team sport, so I can just be left alone by other people...hahaha
i don't get some thing about introverted people, could some one please explain it? I'm from North Carolina and people are absolutely as Grey described. the people there are very friendly and very much vocal enough to show it. what i don't get is what he means by saying its exhausting. how is it exhausting? physically, mentally or what? I'm sorry i don't mean to be ignorant or offensive but i don't see how this possible unless some one is suffering from a mental illness like depression however mild it may be. If that is the case i would think this would be a matter of concern.
As a introvert I will say it's tiring mentally more than physically but it really is just more of at least for me thinking about what I might say and how to say it that is exhausting.
Someone constantly taking your focus and interrupting your life is not exhausting to you? You must have the most boring life with nothing worthwhile happening that you don’t think constant interruptions are exhausting.
1:29:00 I am the COMPLETE opposite, I can barely understand people when they say “half past 10” or “quarter to noon”. That would never work for me, whenever I hear “quarter to 5” I need to go through: 5=17:00 - one quarter of... oh right, an hour so 15 minutes sooo.... 16:45 got it.

I'm gonna go SMBC on that puff conversation:

As Philip de Franco put it you are purchasing something its just the currency is different how do you guys think you get paid?
Why is this uploaded in 1080p @60fps??
For some reason Grey likes to upload videos at 4k even, just because the option is there :P
+Neurological Adventure The audio is better at 1080p because of the compression RUclips uses. As to why it is uploaded in 60fps, I don't know.
