@@JinjiSayson That's not true. They were not all East Asians. For example Ali Wong is ethnically mixed and both her parents are born in America.
I used to work in southern Illinois, one of my patients lightly slapped my hand and told me she doesn't want me start her IV, she demanded for a white nurse. I asked other nurses to do it but they all failed, she was a hard stick. I ended going back to her room and at that point she allowed me to do it. @@RemorfChuket No, "diverse cast" means even though they are all ethnically Asians , but still, they are from different backgrounds, Asian-American, Asian-British, Asian-Australian... And it's a story about Asian culture happening in an Asian country, it doesn't make much sense to put white people in there.
@- SageAegis - give it 15 years and it’ll become noticeable in media.

Trevor, been a fan for a long time, I must say this presentation of Asian Americans is one of my favorites. Inclusivity should be the goal. I picked up a review one day and it was an Asian Reviewer had watched BTS, a Korean Music group on SNL/Saturday Night Live. I was struck that the reviewer was choked up by their appearance on tv. I wonder why? I read on to find out that this was the first time in all of the reviewers years that he had seen Asians being represented as the lead act on a National television show. He had seen Asians in cameo's or small bit parts but never as the lead or held in such high regard. I thought about his words and began to understand why this TV show brought him to tears & why it would be an important memory inside of him forever. From reading that review, the writer painted a picture that I had not seen or heard about before. I learned such an important lesson how representation matters in the world around us. You Trevor Noah are Also doing what needs to be done to help give these amazing people a platform, so they can represent their community. Thank you!
As a non-Asian fan of BTS, it was really eye opening to see just how deeply Asian fans were affected by the group reaching the level of fame they have. I saw multiple videos of families, from grandparents to babies, watching their US tv appearances together... seeing how the adults became emotional, while the young kids just enjoyed it and danced along really brought home how impactful it is to see someone from your demographic getting represented. Many people pointed out it was the first time they'd ever seen an Asian person at that level of fame be presented as cool, desirable and relatable for a mainstream American audience. Even though I'd seen how much BTS were discriminated against for their race and nationality over the years (and let me tell you that was eye-opening too) I hadn't understood the reality of just how lacking Asian representation was in the US or how deeply that affected people until I saw it first hand. It's not like I had no idea it was an issue, but I didn't understand the full impact... anyway, not sure where I'm going with this, except to say media representation is important. People from every demographic deserve a platform from which to express themselves and represent their point of view. This is basic stuff I know, but we clearly still have a long way to go.
It’s the same reason why I cried after watching Crazy Rich Asians in the movie theater. The film itself was fine. It had its moments. Nothing spectacular. But it was the first time in my life I saw Asians on the big screen. And, as an American, Asian films from Asia doesn’t count. It’s not the same culturally. I don’t have the same connection even though I grew up watching Asian tv and film. I was too young when Joy Luck Club was made so, yeah, CRA was the movie for my generation.
Not only do we rarely see teen movies and romcoms where the lead is Asian (or even other minorities), but normally when we do, there's something about their race or identity that plays into the plot. Marginalized groups rarely are allowed to be a lead where their identity isn't the purpose of the movie/show, which shows how producers find "white" as the standard and nonwhite stories only have to do with being "nonwhite". In reality, parts of our lives don't directly have to do with our race overtly, and it's disrespectful to not afford marginalized people the ability to just exist with their identity, without it being about their identity.
That is true but they only make up 5.4% of the US population, that's only little of 1 in 20. My point is you wouldn't expect them to have that many leads. One of the problem of SJW movement is logic perspective. Equality isn't going to to result in an equal distribution, it will result in a proportional distribution. Having said that the are likely still under represent as are other groups.
@@GlassTopRX7 and 5.6% of the movies don't have Asian teen leads where their story is not about them being Asian. I never said it had to be a majority of the movies. But it's not even proportional.
Let's also not forget the fact that people of middle-eastern decent, which is in ASIA, are considered white on the US census. So are northern Africans. So when you look up stats on what percentage of the population is what race, don't forget that white people will always be over-accounted for, as people who aren't even white are labeled as "white".
Let's ALSO not forget that minorities are more likely to not fill out the census. If you don't fill out the census, the US will assume your race, which is normally white if you're living in a majority white area, which is most places. Those people also make white people over accounted for.
14% (plus more for mixed people) of movies about teens AREN'T about black teens without making it about their race
25% of movies AREN'T about latine teens without making it about their race (25% of people aged 10-19 are latine)
5% of movies AREN'T about Asian teens without making it about their race
16.7% of movies AREN'T about LGBTQ+ folk without making it about their sexuality/gender
26% of movies AREN'T about disabled people without making it aboht their disability
But 95% of the movies about teens are about white teens and it rarely has anything to do with their race
You're purposefully ignorant if you believe the film industry is equitable.
@@GlassTopRX7 I never said it had to be equally distributed in my entire statement, where did I say that? What I said is 100% true and it was irrelevant and unnecessary to point out they make up 5.4% of the population, not to mention I said all marginalized groups, which also include LGBTQ+ folk.
@@nanochic No you didn't but you implied it by saying rarely when the expectation would only be ~5% to me that rare.
@@nanochic So how many African lead actors are in Chinese or Korean films? How many African films have Asian lead actors?
Thank you, Jon Stewart, for finding Trever Noah. He is such a terrific addition to our entire country.

'Stand-up comedians are cultural tellers'. Beautiful and truest thing ever said.
Nothing will fundamentally change until most Americans let go of this belief that they're better than everyone else. This will offend a lot of people but this is the root of the issue that most Americans shy away from admitting. No decent nation should ever look down upon others. It's morally reprehensible and counter productive.
