The people recording this festival had to get each artists permission to record their performance. Big Brother and the Holding Company, the band , refused. Janis basically held her breath until they agreed. She refused to perform unless they were recorded. She KNEW this was her moment. Love Janis 💘😪
That's Mama Cass of the Mamas and Papas in the audience. This was Janis's first big performance. She was pretty much unknown. Summertime is a good one. Glad you liked it!
I was going to say the same thing, about the lady in awe being "Mama Cass". Cass Elliot would tragically pass away at a young age, too. "Dream a Little Dream of Me" by Mama Cass is such a pretty song.
Apparently a record executive offered Janis a record contract later that day, and she said she would sign, but only if he slept with her! He did, she did.
For context, at the time of this performance Janis was mostly unknown ,outside the San Francisco scene. She was just the lead singer for Big Brother and the Holding Company, and they didn't achieve national fame until this appearance at Monterey. Whereas Mama Cass mouthing the awestruck "Wow" here, had already achieved fame as a vocalist a couple years earlier, as her band had already charted in the Top Ten a couple times, including a #1 hit.
I saw this performance in person! I grew up in the Monterey area. I saw her one more time in San Francisco at the Avalon Ballroom in 1969. Her energy can be felt out the doors and around the corner. She left us forever changed. She gave 110% each and every time. Her hot flame burned out way too early. I am so grateful to see new generations discover her magic and get blown away just like we did🎶✌️🎶. I suggest Me and Bobby McGee and Summertime🌹
Janis Joplin always credited Bessie Smith as a major influence. When the money started coming in for Janis she made sure a proper headstone marked Bessie's grave with the following words - "The Greatest Blues Singer In The World Will Never Stop Singing-Bessie Smith‐1895‐1937" You might like Bessie's old school blues. My Favorite by Joplin is "A Woman Left Lonely"
Huge Janis Joplin fan here all my life and I remember the day she passed. Jimi Hendrix had passed away the month before and we were in total shock. I love them both and still do. A suggestion which I'm guessing you've already gotten. You must listen to Beth Hart. Please listen to her singing "Am I The One - Live at Paradiso." You have to make sure it's the LIVE AT PARADISO version as that is by far the best one. She will blow your socks off, that's if you're wearing socks LOL.
The lady starring is Mama Cass of the famous Mamas and Papas. Yes it is so sad we lost the three J’s all at age 27 Jim Morrison Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin
When a singer of the talent and Fame of Cass Elliot is awestruck by your performance I think you've done a pretty damn good job!! I tear up everytime I hear this song just from Janis' passion and feeling and just her movements on stage when she really gets up there in those high notes and screams it just runs a chill down my spine and I cannot stop from tearing up!! RIP TO ONE OF THE G.O.A.T.S!!!!
It's very unfortunate & upsetting that she passed at 27 years old, we missed out on 15-plus years of music from Janis that our ears never got to experience 😢 💔 .
@@dubzer0649 Gotta see her with the Mamas and the Papas...classic harmonies!!! Try" words of love" on the ed sullivan show. It showcases Cass's voice in the group. "California Dreamin" showcases the harmonies.
@@dubzer0649 Cass Elliot was an astonishing talent, and another one who left us way too young. She was in the audience witnessing her crown of the supreme female vocalist on the planet being passed to Janis.
Other great songs by Janis are "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Piece of my Heart". BTW the woman in the sunglasses was Cass Elliott of the group The Mamas and the Papas. You should check out their song "California Dreaming".
I have no adequate words for Janice, she was just amazing! Mama Cass in the audience was huge at that time as well, she belonged to a group called the Mama's & The Papa's. You should check them out their harmonies were beautiful !
Janis Joplin on Dick Cavett show performing a cover of Bee Gees song called To Love Somebody. Also, a live performance of Summertime. You will love either.
I learned about Janis Joplin from my aunt Janice. Joplin was her idol. She saw her live and never was the same again. Lol. Bringing back great memories.
You said "her face"? man, the camera follow her because she is Cass Elliot "Mama Cass" from The Mamas and The Papas a very popular group from that time. She had a beautiful voice and her reaction is because she really appreciate what she is hearing.
You can't Karaoke sing this one song that was written I swear for only one person to sing who could pull it off with the iconic jazzy scat Janis added to the blues to fancy up a long note. You can't do or sing this song good enough to get this feeling Janis just made me feel. Janis made a customized for herself song here because I sure couldn't pull it off. That foot stomp was a great way to start off the song's mood straight off the blocks.
Hahahahaha!! Dub, I love the thumbnail for this video … your expression is priceless!! 🤣🤣 Janis Joplin is one of a kind!! Great raspy vocals & electric stage presence. It was rumored that Janis dated Robert Plant four months before she died October 1970. Gotta do PIECE OF MY HEART next. ✌️✌️✌️

Truly a seismic presence on the music scene. Interestingly, I'm old enough to recall Janis appearing on a talk show (I think it was Dick Cavett) & when asked who was currently her favorite vocalist/performer on the music scene, without missing a beat Janis said: "Tina Turner." So there's that as far as influences. Just saying.
