Growing A Plant In My Car (Carplant)

- Growing plants in the house is commonplace, however not so with cars. Growing a plant in a car requires a lot more thought due to safety concerns and also the extreme heat on a sunny day. In this video I explain the reasons why I chose to use a Jade plant (Crassula ovata) and I also show how I've fixed it in place to ensure it doesn't fall over with sudden breaking or sharp bends.
I intend to do regular updates to see how successful this experiment is.
Thanks for watching

So cool! Hahahaha I’m addicted to plants and was just thinking; “how else can I be surrounded by plants? Oh yeah my car!” So cool thanks for sharing
Good luck with growing your first car plant, the key is making sure you choose a plant that can survive high temperatures and high light levels.
I’m glad I’m not the only one
😆 me too, I thought I was crazy for wanting to try 🤭
🤣 Just have the idea right now, so searched and lol found you ✌️🤣
It's worth trying, but the heat and sun in summer make growing plants in a car a little challenging, you certainly need to use the correct type of plant which can survive the heat and strong sunshine.
The velcro idea sounds the best plan so you can remove the pot in winter and replace it with something more suitable!
I might look into some velcro and glueing it to the dashboard so I can change it when the weather changes. I've just potted it up with a plant for Winter and the epoxy resin is starting to come loose already.
Great idea. Never heard of growing plants in the car
First I thought I will use mini snake plant until I found out this video.
Im doing today.
Thanks for sharing. 👍🏻
What a fun idea, wishing the plant all the best in its new home. 🌞
What an original idea, never had thought of that😊
Cool idea! What better than some nature to carry along with you when you're sitting in traffic? :)
Thank you for being the answer to my question
Adam Stewart(RIP, my little Boy) we miss you, The Mustang Shop Mama Kitty
To keep things in place in my family's camper, we Velcro everything to a surface so it stays, but we can still move it if we want to. I think I want to do this in my car ! Thank you :)
Best idea
fantastic idea !!!
Awesome, I've thought of doing something like this :) Unfortunately I think Chicago can get way too hot, and way too cold :D
Neat idea. Any update on this project?
Yes, I am uploading a new video today.
Cacti would be better. Even a spineless one. Better handling of heat/ cold/ drought and won't grow fast
Yeah just get one of those cacti that are furry rather than pointy stabby XD
Yes, but cacti are too delicate. Cacti's roots may get destroyed while driving especially when the car accelerates then stopped.
I was just thinking about how the car would be a great place to grow a plant (because of the constant sunlight)! I think growing herbs/lettuce would be easiest.
It's a very harsh environment for most plants, light levels are usually too high for most plants and temperatures can go well over 40C (104F) on a hot sunny day cooking all but cacti and succulents. Also in winter it is almost as cold inside the car as outside so the plants have to tolerate freezing temperatures. If you want to grow an edible plant some of the Mediterranean herbs would be best as they like high temperatures and light levels, but can also survive some freezing. Something like Thyme, Rosemary, Sage or Lavender should be ok, but even with my Jade plant is sometimes suffered from the heat and needed a lot of water on hot days.
Any updates?
Hey! Any updates on the jade plant?
I love my PatPat
👏🏼 ☺️
epoxy resin?? next time try commercial grade Velcro /hook n loop...works just as good and you wont have to chip it off
I think I will upgrade to velcro next year as when I changed the plant for a winter hardy one today the epoxy resin was already starting to loosen.
It's nice, but how about put a black paint on that plastic pot?
That weird feeling when the steering wheel is on the wrong side of a car.:)
it's on the right side ;)
My point exactly!
Your just jealous because all the cool kids have right-hand drive
@@amills3271 in india all cars have steering wheel on the right :)
I just put mine in a cup holder
was there snow on the ground out side of the car?
Yes, I filmed it in early spring just after a cold spell.
why didn't you use blue tack?
There are a couple of problems with blue tack in this situation, the temperatures in the van fluctuate too much, in high heat blue tack tends to get very soft and in low temperatures it becomes brittle. Also the gforce is too high in a vehicle and so with heavy braking or fast turning it won't have enough adhesion to hold the plant in place.
I want to know how the car plant is doing!
I really like this idea but can't really do it here in the Northeastern US. It can get up to 140 degrees F in a parked car in the summer, even with the windows cracked....I'd be really interested to see an update on this :)
An update is on its way in the next hour or two. Yes 140F is probably too high for a Jade plant, however a Lithops might do well as its well adapted to extreme heat.
Epoxy?? Why not double sided tape
