Yes, he clearly went around, but the ball clearly hit the bat. The unclear things are what did the ball deflect off of. Luke's glove? If that's the case then the play is not complete until either the batter runs to first or is tagged out. That's the biggest mystery.
Because on the previous pitch, Mike stanton got hit in the face and had to be sent to the hospital. That previous pitch had been called a strike since mike tried to block the ball with his bat handle. Reed johnson comes in as a pinch hitter since mike's in the hospital. Very next pitch idiot Fiers throws up and in again. That's why they're pissed off you stupid ass bitch

dylan cox It shouldn't have been a strikeout. It should have been called a foul ball, since he did go around on it. If the catcher caught it before it hit the ground, then he's out. Edit: Nope, I'm wrong. Sorry about that, it's been a while since I saw/heard that rule.
***** Oh grow up, players get hurt all the time including MVP candidates in every major league sport. Stanton isn't invincible to major injury just like any other player. It's terrible news and we all feel bad for him, but even the most simpletons of simpletons can tell this commentator lost his cool in that situation. He turned into an angry fan and forgot he was on the clock, it happens. By the time he recovers it might be time to head out the door for a different club anyway if that makes you feel any better.
Yeah the announcer was going over the line in my opinion. I think the umps made the right secession by calling him out. The rule is, if the bat crosses the plate, it's a swing. I've been playing baseball for 10 years so I don't want anyone saying I don't know what I'm talking about. :)
How cus they speak the truth grow TF up 😂 you kds get butt hurt easy he was hit with the ball and umpires said strike Umpires are worse than the NFL refs
Kingsavagebruh welcome to baseball where if you get hit and finish the swing , you are out, and then complaining about the commentators is completely fair, they are and we’re very biased
Kingsavagebruh ... you clearly know nothing about baseball if you don’t think when the bat crosses the plate, that is not considered a swing. Stick to football you Steelers fan.
I know nothing I played baseball stupid 😂 bat cross the plate cus he was getting hit by the ball Y'ALL NEED TO LEARN BASEBALL BEFORE ACTING LIKE YOU KNOW EVERYTHING
Fiers did not intentionally hit either one of them, most especially Stanton. You can tell he was too shook up by it, he was having a hard time even looking at him lying there. He probably should have been replaced before Johnson came up. He did not have control of his pitches most of the night. I do not think he actually hit Johnson. I think it hit off the knob of the bat, not his hand, certainly not his right hand. His left hand was towards the incoming ball, his right was still tucked towards him. I think he played that up a little hoping to get Fiers ejected. Instead McGehee goes balistic and gets himself and his coach ejected and both benches get warned.
Nothing can justify that Two dangerous pitch, even if the second one wasnt a deadball, it is still way too dangerous, and Fiers should be ejected for the dangerous pitches. Doesnt matter its intension or not
Joz Sun in a ballgame, the pitcher is automatically rejected after hitting 3 players (that is if things haven't changed in 3-4 years). Also, I think the batter may have tried to get out of the way, but never pull your bat over the plate. He did swing when he ducked.
That one announcer should be banned for a few games. I'm pretty sure they aren't allowed to side with a team. Way too worked up, and frankly, pretty annoying to listen to.
Omega there both marlins announcers, are you telling me announcers never root for their own team? Also Giancarlo Stanton just had his face broken into pieces by the same pitcher. Let me know how you react if your friend got hit in the face with a baseball had his face shattered, bleeding face on the floor, in so much pain you cant even move and out for the year. And then right after another buddy almost gets hit in the face with the same exact pitch and same pitcher. How would you react? Maybe you would let 2 of your buddies get hit in the face with a baseball, not us Floridians.
Omega Each team has a set of announcers that announce during their games on their local network. The announcers only announce for that team and it's the organization that they are apart of, so of course they are going to be rooting for the team they broadcast for. Especially when the television station only broadcast in areas around the team's location, where the majority of fans are most likely at.
well dont forget this is the batter that replaced Stanton when he was hit in the face. When Stanton was hit they counted it as a strike and this was the next pitch afterwards. obviously everyone was pissed at this.
Lukas Ollervides he didn’t intentionally hit him. Did you see his reaction after he did? He immediately jumped from the mound and he was clearly flustered and upset. Also why would he want to bring the tying run to the plate? Hitting him intentionally there makes no sense (hitting someone intentionally AT ALL makes no sense)
I understand why the Marlins are upset about Stanton earier in this at bat, but Fiers clearly wasn't trying to hit them, he was upset he hit Stanton, and both pitches got away from him. Marlins commentators didn't have 1 thing right here.
The intent doesn't matter at that point, you drill a guy in the face and then almost hit another guy in the head right after you shouldn't be in the game. Don't need guys getting killed because Fiers can't find the zone.
@@cloakedbadger9762 neither pitches were that bad. Both Stanton and Reed were crowding the plate. Stanton must not have seen the ball well out of Fiers hand because he didnt even try to get out of the way til the last second. Fiers was pitching a shutout at this point. He was not having control problems
Very unprofessional of Casey McGehee to act like that. I do understand the situation and why he would be pissed off at that, but it's not sportsmanlike to go off like that, especially against your former team. I understood why Brewers fans booed him when he did that. As a Brewers fan (and a Twins fan as well), I never really liked McGehee that much (personality wise, great player though), and that contributed to my vote for Justin Morneau in the 2014 MLB All Star Game NL Final Spot vote instead of Casey McGehee.
weaselwrocks The guy has some fire in his belly, which is good. However, I think Bochy knows how to handle that and can't recall the last Giant that was a "cancer" in his clubhouse.
It was because, on two straight pitches that HIT the batter[s], the umpire said they attempted to swing at the ball, which is utter BS in and of itself. First one hit Giancarlo Stanton squarely in the jaw and took him out for the rest of the season [you're not trying to swing at a pitch coming at your face], and the next one hit Johnson, who was then pinch hitting for Stanton, in the hand, near his head. Again, you're not trying to swing in that case. McGehee was absolutely justified in his anger, especially considering the team had just lost their best player for the remainder of the season with a gruesome injury.
manjenson If you are moving from a pitch you turn your back to it. The bat crossed the plate so strike 3. The ball hit the arm not the hand which is not part of the bat so no foul ball.
I feel horrible for Fiers. I truly believe he didnt mean to hit either Johnson or Stanton. You can see he's visibly upset when confronted from the opposing teams dugout. It's got to really shake a person up when you realize you may have just ended someone's career with one of your pitches.
OK, I don't play baseball and I'm not familiar with all the rules. However, playing the pitch in slow motion certain aspects are clear: 1. Just before the release by the pitcher the batter's body is towards 1st base, his hands are behind his head, the bat is angled up and back over his shoulder, and he has a light squat to his stance. 2. When the ball arrives at the batter's box the pitch is over the plate. The ball is level with the bottom of the 'Cellular' sign behind them. The batter is now body towards the pitcher with both legs stretched out, one forward and one backward; thus he's now squatting lower. The bat has dropped down to be angled down across the plate. Batter's hand are over the edge of the plate and swinging forward with the bat in his hands. 3. Ball hits his hand on the bat over the plate and just below level with his shoulders. Both hands and bat continue to swing forward and he continues to pivot to his left while dropping his body lower. Now, it looks like, to me, the ball was in the strike zone and the batter brought the bat through about 100 degrees of arc while changing it's angle of attack by about 30 degrees before the ball hits his hand holding the bat. Does this constitute a swing at the ball or not, or does it constitute a ball in the strike zone - either is a strike call, is it not? I don't know which it should be called, but it was over the edge of the plate and in the strike zone. The commentators clearly don't like the play, that's for sure.
He's obviously still upset from accidently dropping Stanton, that was horrible. So he's still shaken up from that and tosses another one, and accidently goes up and in and these commentators in the game are biased as hell. Fiers is visibly distraught. Honestly it was Stanton's fault the pitch hit him in the face, he could have turned his head the other way, but turned it into the ball, I love Stanton too, but you learn that if the ball is coming at you to turn your head away in little league, so yea. Fiers was right to not be tossed.
Here is what I saw, coming from a Marlins fan, and someone who has nothing against the Brewers. First thing's first, Fiars did not intentionally hit Johnson or Stanton, you clearly see in his facial expressions that it actually made him very emotional when Stanton got hit. Second, Casey mcGehee's reaction was very uncalled for, it was just feeding the flames to an already bad situation. Last, to the Marlin's announcers, I'm sorry but Reed Johnson did indeed swing. The anger is understandable, but his bat did break the plain. The Marlins have a right to be angry about being pegged up and in twice, but they blew it out of proportion.
I would love to hear the color commentary guy do the same for football. He would get livid about every holding and DPI call "JUST LET THEM PLAY" and "OH IS THIS SUPPOSED TO BE TWO-HAND TOUCH?"
If you get hit by a pitch, but swing at it, it's a strike. He was out, period, those are the rules. It happened to Rizzo twice last year. It's rare, but sit the fuck down.
crwilso6 Happened to Russell Martin this year, and he didn't even offer at it like Johnson did here, he only started his swing. This was a clear strike.
i always feel that announcers should be neutral and not cheer for anyone of the teams. get excited bout a homerun or a great play but always stay neutral. it used to be that way years ago but now days like the game thats all changed. the announcers of this game are just the worst at doing there job an not excite people watching the game at home. now days i watch a game without the sound to avoid listening to really, really bad commentators. with the exception of vin scully, the guy is class personified. he should be the announcer for the world series like he use to do years ago. i`ll take him over joe buck anyday
Ok, so here is what happened. While dodging the ball, the bat crossed the plate which is a swing. It is ruled just like if you were to dodge the ball and leave the bat up there and the ball goes off the bat, but in that case it would be considered a foul ball. In this instance, because the hands are not part of the bat, the swing counts as a strike. It is not where the bat was when he was hit, but where the bat ends its motion. The announcers are Marlins announcers, but it is very clear that they have no clue what the rule is and really shouldn't make themselves look any more stupid by dragging it out.
People in these comments talking trash the announcers but thats straight up entertaining and I love it. An announcer that loves his team and puts his heart on his craft
You're right. In most cases if a pitcher hits a batter and it looked intentional the dugouts are both given warnings, but in this case you have to look at the pitch count. Its a 0-2 count so for the pitcher to intentionally hit a batter at this stage doesn't make much sense.
David Kwon Um maybe you should know what you are talking about because the batter before him (Stanton) was hit in the face by a pitch and they called it a strike and it carried over to Johnson who replaced Stanton.
There are a lot of biased home network announcers but the Marlins have the worst and the most biased announcers of any MLB team. If you want the most unbiased announcers of a home network (that means not Fox Sports, Fox Sports 1, or ESPN) then you should listen to the New York Mets announcers on SNY. They have no problem calling it like it is. I don't mean they complain about the Mets like some of the fans do. They will actually give credit to the opposing team if that is where the credit is due.
They're more mad that fiers threw up and in twice in a row. Reed Johnson was pinch hitting for mike stanton who had just got hit int he face and sent to the hospital. That pitch was also called a strike cause Mike had tried to block the ball with his bat handle. Very next pitch fires almost hits another guy in the face and once again it gets called a strike. Any normal person would be mad you stupid ass bitch
I cannot agree with the marlins more than just know. They have all rights to be angry at Fiers, he hit their best player, then in the same at bat (apparently Stanton swung which is bull) he then hits Johnson who came in for Stanton. Marlins and the commentator have my respect
I don't think he should be ejected after what he did. However, I think Roenike should have taken him out so Fiers could mentally recover from what had just happened.
"MIKE FIERS IS STILL OUT THERE! MIKE FIERS IS STILL OUT THERE! THEY"RE SAYING HE STRUCK OUT! U KIDDING ME?! THEY"RE SAYING HE STRUCK OUT! There's no way. There's absolutely no WAY!" Holy double post rampage sir
There are a few comments about that not being a strikeout. Unfortunately it is. The rule on a ball that hits you, is that if you swing through it, it counts the same as a check swing strike. The hand is not part of the bat, so it is not a foul ball. It doesn't matter that the ball hit him before the bat crosses the plate. This is the correct call.
No, it really isn't the correct call. It wasn't a swing because the batter made no attempt to "strike the ball". Go frame by frame and look at the position of his left arm relative to his chest-it stays in basically the same position until after the ball hits his hand. Simply turning your body like that is not an attempt to strike the ball.
It doesn't state he has to make an attempt to strike the ball, just the bat crosses the zone, which it did. He started his swing, and moving his head made him finish the process and swing through the zone. It is a terrible play, but the correct call.
" just the bat crosses the zone, which it did" OK, here are the official MLB rules: mlb.mlb.com/documents/0/8/0/268272080/2018_Official_Baseball_Rules.pdf Please find the rule that says if the bat crosses the zone, it's a strike. I'll wait.
I don't think anyone's disputing Fiers lack of control this game, but Johnson definitely swung at the pitch. If you're going to dodge a pitch turn the other way. When you turn your body the way Johnson did the barrel of the bat go with it, which resulted in the swing. The call is correct.
***** He had him 0-2 and one of those strikes was from another hit batter (Stanton) that was called a strike after he was hit in the face. Please don't comment if you have no clue on what you're talking about.
@@jerryjackson7813 and neither pitch was intentional. The point still stands. It was an 0-2 count and they were up by four. It was completely obvious both pitches were unintentional. Both Stanton and Reed were crowding the plate. The one to Reed was not even that far inside. Fiers did nothing wrong whatsoever
"He didn't swing!" Hmmm that looks like a swinging motion to me, if he were trying to get out of the way, Johnson would've moved his hands back rather than towards the pitchers
dannyrod56 "...And I don't care if he took a peek at it. It's his first one" -Right after José Fernandez's first home run. Nonetheless, I totally understand his reaction. That's just the heat of the moment. You wouldn't be a human if you didn't react like him. I mean, he's a COMMENTATOR (it's what he thinks)
AeroForceOne In some leagues that's a rule, where if you get hit on the hand it's considered a foul ball because your hands are technically considered part of the bat. Happened to me when I was 13. Actually got hit on the hands so hard it ripped off some skin from my fingers, but the ump called it a foul ball with the same explanation. It's not a rule in the majors though.
Why is everyone bashing the Marlins announcers? The second guy, who was freaking out is Tommy Hutton and he only commentates Marlins games so he could be biased a bit and he can get a bit emotional. Hutton was also pissed because Stanton was hit in the face by fiers earlier in the inning and still wasn't ejected. That's why he's pissed.
drew rice Right before that guy, literally the batter before just got hit in the face and had his face broken in pieces and then the next batter he hits him in the hand.
Gotta love Tommy Hutton. I'm glad MLB decided to use the Marlins broadcast because I guarantee you all of the comments here are going to be pro Brewers just like on ESPN. No one sticks up for the hapless Marlins. Get well soon Stanton.
The replay at 3:04 makes it pretty clear that he swung. The rules don't say anything about whether the bat crossed the plate or whether the batter turns his wrists. It's simply about whether the umpire thinks he tried to hit the ball, and he absolutely did.
@@camstar24802 neither one of those balls were going 98. The one that hit Stanton and Reed were 88 to 90. Both could have and should have gotten out of the way. It appears Stanton didnt see the ball until it was too late and he was crowding the plate . Reed was crowding the plate also and had plenty of time to get out of the way if he wanted to.
I think it was clear Fiers was upset because he already felt awful about hitting Stanton. I think he was having a bad game. The Marlins have every right to be angry and want to protect their guys but at the same time, I really don't think Fiers was intentionally trying to hurt people.
Tommy Hutton was not classless. I've been a Marlins fan since '96 and watch about 130 Marlins game a year. I enjoy his color commentary more than any others in the past. If you are a Marlins fan and watched that game, you know it was probably the most emotional distraught 2 pitches ever witnessed. The Marlins already lost Jose Fernandez to Tommy John surgery and were clinging to life for a wild-card. With Stanton the MVP contender, that pitch likely sealed the fate of any post-season chances. Marlin's fans were extremely upset and Tommy portrayed how we felt during this Marlin's broadcast.
Marlins announcers are jokes. I'm a Mets fan and I live in Florida, I have my whole life and every time the Marlins are on I have to watch FSN Florida and listen to the most bias assholes, Named Tommy Hutton and Craig Minervini. I've heard all NL East teams fans complain about them, Plus some NL Central fans. The only worse announcers are the White Sox, Hawk and Steve Stone.
To be fair somewhat to the announcers, it did look like the ball hit the batter in the hands before the swing. That being said, they do sound like homers. I'm not sure on the ruling though, I know if the bat goes around (aka swings, whether your trying to or not) while you're getting out of the way, it's a strike. I remember going to a game a few years back, and in between one of the inning, they showed an example on the video board of someone moving out of the way of an errant pitch, and the batter had held on to the bat, and while he wasn't trying to, he was just trying to get out of the way, he went around with the bat, so it ended up being a strike cause he technically swung at it. Not sure about the rule if you're hit before or during the swing, and it looked like he got hit before the swing
Lortang Nope. The hands being an extension of the bat rule is actually a myth. The rule is if the batter swings, it is a strike, if not, he is awarded first base. Common mistake though.
you dont as an announcer approve of a fight needing to happen, or verbally assault an ump as a player. you're a bunch of thugs, with horrible people as announcers
Wyatt Braam Neither was intentional. After Stanton was hit, it was quite obvious that he was shaken up about it. He should have been taken out of the game. But the manager left him in, and his wildness continued and he hit Johnson. It happened. Marlins overreacted. Announcers are pathetic.
***** LOL thugs? Tell me again, how many punches were throw by Marlins players? Did you even know right before this, Giancarlo Stanton had the same pitch, a fastball, thrown at his head, and his face shattered? Giancarlo was face first on the floor, bleeding from his shattered face, he couldnt even move he was in so much pain, and out of the season. How would you react if you just saw a buddy get hit with a fastball in the face and his face was shattered to pieces and then another buddy right after almost gets hit in the face by the same exact pitch and same pitcher? Maybe you would let 2 of your buddies get hit in the face by baseballs, and one of your buddies have to get facial surgery, not us, we stick up for our players.
It is one thing to be upset that a teammate is hurt. It is another to try to start a fight over an obvious non-intentional pitched ball. If they wanted to be pissed at someone, be pissed at Milwaukee's manager for not taking Fiers out of the game. Fiers was wild and rattled after hitting Stanton. He had no business throwing another pitch after that one.
Mike Fiers didn't mean to do either of them, the ball got away on the Stanton one and with Johnson he was still shook up by what he accidentally did to Stanton, and the very next pitch (with all that despair and anxiety) throws a ball off the mark and clips the next guy and the commentators flip flop over the whole thing
Firers was raging for no reason. He had no rights to be mad. You hit 2 players. Sent 1 to the hospital, and a pitch up and in and was called a strike. Fiers is a "Class A" player alright.
Fiers* raged because he thought Casey McGehee was shouting at him calling him buulshit. Than Garrett Jones and the Marlins bench came out and raged over 9000. I understand why they would be mad but at the same time very classless
mikeshogunlee For the Marlins? Have some class, which McGehee lacked. You don't go at the umpire like that. Ever. The Marlins showed no class in this. Fiers was angry because the Marlins were yelling at him, as SlimShady9000Mac pointed out.
So... To get this all straight when a pitcher, who has already sent one of your guys to the hospital, hits *another* one of your teammates, you are to calmly speak from your respective bench, in an elevated but non threatening tone, "Why excuse me good sir could you please refrain from hitting our batters? We understand you may be having an off night, but if your scrupulous behavior continues we will be forced to file a complaint with management, Please and thank you." Look I am not saying you should let teams run out on to the field with bats and shanks looking to kill someone, but when a highly emotional series of events like the one that transpired in this games happens, people should be cut some slack. And I don't care if he swung at it or not, when a player gets hit he should be given the damn base!
Robert C by rule if the batter is hit and swings the correct call would be a strike. So the call is not ridiculous. If you don't believe me fine, but look it up for yourself.
McGhee, who played for the Brewers, being held back by Yelich, who now plays for the Brewers... Very strange.
That’s what I was thinking 😂
Probably their dream team.

@@muney_betz you mean the best franchise ever the first ever 6 time Superbowl champs and only team to do it without cheating like that Patriots team
he still swung, you have proved nothing in your argument so far
That announcer though😂😂😂 he clearly did swing but I love how passionate you are about your team😂
I hate announcers and commentators like this.
You should hear the White Sox commentators haha
Cus you can't take the truth kid grow up
Kingsavagebruh it was still unprofessional and they were being out of line and were wrong on some points (well at least the secondary announcer)
Doesnt matter its intension or not
It obviously hit his right hand. Watch at 2:56. Please dont say stupid things.
Hit the knob of the bat? Are you fucking blind? Lol I'm not a fan of either of these teams, but it clearly hit the top of his hand.
Fiers accuracy was shit during that game and the coach should have benched him after he beamed Stanton.
Omega I guess you have never listened to Hawk Harrelson call any one of the White Sox games
Seeing as I'm not a white sox fan, no lol.
Omega Very annoying and dumb. He actually helped incite it.
could they have gotten the other commentators? These two are clearly a joke and if they haven't been fired already they should be
They're cool you're just a Bitch
well dont forget this is the batter that replaced Stanton when he was hit in the face. When Stanton was hit they counted it as a strike and this was the next pitch afterwards. obviously everyone was pissed at this.
+Wu Ying-Min lol
Oh shut up you don't know shit about the game of baseball
Atrocious commentator. You really think Fiers is gonna intentionally hit someone when he's up 4-0 trying to protect his lead?
Andy Pandy858 he intentionally hit Stanton. Why not another guy too?
Lukas Ollervides He definitely did not intentionally hit Stanton. What are you smoking?
Lukas Ollervides he didn’t intentionally hit him. Did you see his reaction after he did? He immediately jumped from the mound and he was clearly flustered and upset. Also why would he want to bring the tying run to the plate? Hitting him intentionally there makes no sense (hitting someone intentionally AT ALL makes no sense)
@@lukasollervides6070 he didnt intentionally hit either one.
But they were upset that Mike Fiers wasn't able to control his pitches whether its intentional or not.
@@EpicOpMc He couldn't really pull himself out.
@@EpicOpMc Good thing you're not a ref because that's not how ejections are decided #Necropost
Will he be a cancer in the Giants clubhouse?
weaselwrocks The guy has some fire in his belly, which is good. However, I think Bochy knows how to handle that and can't recall the last Giant that was a "cancer" in his clubhouse.
weaselwrocks No, because even though Casey can get fired up, he knows better than to take it too far. I think he'll be fine in SF.
"you gotta beat all them umpires to a pulp!!! you gotta do it!" really? chillax commentators. you're not ON the marlins.
yureasGJKMLL
carmonkey but they work for them, they know them, it’s their team. Plus he didn’t mean it literally.
2018 Commentator Status Update:
Both fired by the Marlins.
Robb Dark surely they replaced them. They didn’t just drop the commentary on broadcasts.
BLESSED DAY
I feel horrible for Fiers. I truly believe he didnt mean to hit either Johnson or Stanton. You can see he's visibly upset when confronted from the opposing teams dugout. It's got to really shake a person up when you realize you may have just ended someone's career with one of your pitches.
He definitely did
miami commentators are the worst. the mets commentators arent biased at all. its called professionalism
You're kidding right? Mets are one of the most biased. Biased New York media just adds to it.
Same with the Brewers commentary
You should listen to the royals commentator. He's excited for both teams. How it should be
I FUCKING HATE THESE FUCKING RETARDED ANNOUNCERS.
+Josh Sutton exactly

OK, I don't play baseball and I'm not familiar with all the rules. However, playing the pitch in slow motion certain aspects are clear:
Aren't sports announcers supposed to be NON-biased?
These are the local announcers so they are bias
MultiMaddenbeast Michael Kay (Yankees) isn't biased.
Vin Scully (Dodgers) isn't biased.
Nuff said.
***** what was stupid about it that was completely true
***** Michael Kay is incredibly biased. Not as bad as Hawk Harrelson but hes still awful
MultiMaddenbeast do you listen/watch his show? he rips the yankees whenever he can
Did anyone else hear the guy in the crowd that yelled "That's fucking bullshit!"?
I'm pretty sure that was McGehee
MrUnkleKraker I think you're right.
thats was fiers
Cameron Shutwell It was McGehee
***** THAT WAS FIERS
Miami Commentator is so funny as hell like that, "HE DIDNT SWING!!"
and there's me in the background going " FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT!!"
Can't ever turn your head in baseball, the moment you do, is the moment a curve sets you down.
Yes, an 89 MPH pitch missed by 4 inches up and in. Wow. Let's charge the field!
You clearly didn't see the game he hit Stanton in the face right before this
89 is Fiers fastball, he hit 2 marlins players with fastballs up and in including Giancarlo Stanton
Stormie33 I haven't seen the Russell Martin play, I'll have to check it out. Thanks!
crwilso6 he didnt swing
D X I just looked at it again, he most certainly swung. Nice selfie DMX.
Thanks, I used a mirror.
Christian Yelich is like "calm down bro, it'll be ok."
i always feel that announcers should be neutral and not cheer for anyone of the teams. get excited bout a homerun or a great play but always stay neutral. it used to be that way years ago but now days like the game thats all changed. the announcers of this game are just the worst at doing there job an not excite people watching the game at home. now days i watch a game without the sound to avoid listening to really, really bad commentators. with the exception of vin scully, the guy is class personified. he should be the announcer for the world series like he use to do years ago. i`ll take him over joe buck anyday
Cos vin scully was anoncing for years but I agree
Ok, so here is what happened. While dodging the ball, the bat crossed the plate which is a swing. It is ruled just like if you were to dodge the ball and leave the bat up there and the ball goes off the bat, but in that case it would be considered a foul ball. In this instance, because the hands are not part of the bat, the swing counts as a strike. It is not where the bat was when he was hit, but where the bat ends its motion.
The announcers are Marlins announcers, but it is very clear that they have no clue what the rule is and really shouldn't make themselves look any more stupid by dragging it out.
marlins announcers worst in MLB
+Cod Player360 yeah yer right and also the marlins comentators are the funeset ones
+Joseph Michael Ayupan are you kidding me? The legendary Vin Scully!?
+Joseph Michael Ayupan And that has something to do with commentators? Fuck are you talking about
Chairman Meow next to yankee announcers
Chairman Meow Cardinals announcers the worst.
People in these comments talking trash the announcers but thats straight up entertaining and I love it. An announcer that loves his team and puts his heart on his craft
I don't blame them at all. I'm all with the commentator. You have to let mofo's know what's up sometime .
Thank you my exact thought
Minnesota Twins announcers always have as well. Dick Bremer is a class act and an exciting announer.
Came back to hear the guy say “That’s F#cking bullshit!”
I cannot agree with the marlins more than just know. They have all rights to be angry at Fiers, he hit their best player, then in the same at bat (apparently Stanton swung which is bull) he then hits Johnson who came in for Stanton. Marlins and the commentator have my respect
What is bull about it? Both players swung and were correctly ruled as strikes. These announcers have no idea what they are talking about
Yelich restraining McGehee...against the Brewers. That was bizarre to see.
Jesus is reed johnson the color commentators kid or something? embarassing.
"He didn't swing..." rewinds tape...the bat went around "He didn't swing" *rolls eyes
People are wrong. An umpire can eject a pitcher if He is not focused. I think the umpire should take the pitcher after the incident with Stanton .
I don't think he should be ejected after what he did. However, I think Roenike should have taken him out so Fiers could mentally recover from what had just happened.
Exactly, thatz what I wanted to say
I knew the Marlins' team was lousy. I didn't know their announcers were as well.
Top 3 worst announcers Nationals, White Sox and Marlins Top 3 best Giants, Mets and Orioles.
Kevin James the Orioles announcers are so neutral it's a pleasure to listen to them Orioles fans got it good on tv
the indians have the best then rays then pirates
"MIKE FIERS IS STILL OUT THERE! MIKE FIERS IS STILL OUT THERE! THEY"RE SAYING HE STRUCK OUT! U KIDDING ME?! THEY"RE SAYING HE STRUCK OUT! There's no way. There's absolutely no WAY!" Holy double post rampage sir
Yoooo Yelich took McGee back to the dugout
" just the bat crosses the zone, which it did" OK, here are the official MLB rules: mlb.mlb.com/documents/0/8/0/268272080/2018_Official_Baseball_Rules.pdf
Please find the rule that says if the bat crosses the zone, it's a strike.
I'll wait.
Wow... these commentators just embarrassed themselves.
I don't think anyone's disputing Fiers lack of control this game, but Johnson definitely swung at the pitch. If you're going to dodge a pitch turn the other way. When you turn your body the way Johnson did the barrel of the bat go with it, which resulted in the swing. The call is correct.
1:30-1:37 Nope, he's going after a chair.
I actually liked hearing the commentators get all fired up. I personally enjoyed the passion.
Mcgehee's a big baby
Obviously it wasnt intended, he had him 0-2
***** He had him 0-2 and one of those strikes was from another hit batter (Stanton) that was called a strike after he was hit in the face.
I LOVE THESE COMMENTATORS!! WE NEED MORE, IN OUR SPORTS, LIKE THESE GUYS!!
Aren't baseball announcers supposed to be partial?
oh wait, this is the pitcher who threw a no-hitter with the help of pine tar the other day! joy of joys!
"He didn't swing!" Hmmm that looks like a swinging motion to me, if he were trying to get out of the way, Johnson would've moved his hands back rather than towards the pitchers
It cracks me up when half the time the bullpins empty and the benches clear yet sometimes nothing happenes lol
That commentator needs to be more professional while on the job. So sick of guys like him and Hawk harrelsom
I've been hearing the same dude broadcast the marlins game for 10 years. He has never acted up, or done anything like this before.
dannyrod56 "...And I don't care if he took a peek at it. It's his first one"

lustdany yup
lustdany Maybe if that idiot announcer would know the rules, i'd be ok with it, but unshockingly, announcers never get it
Good to see Fiars go from this to a no hitter with the Astros.
I'm not exactly sure of this but isn't the hand considered part of the bat?
Nope if it hits you in the hand its a hit by pitch
***** but if you swing, it doesn't matter. It is still a strike, and since there were two strikes, that made strike 3.
AeroForceOne Hands are part of your body. If you get hit in the hands, you get a base
***** Hands are counted as part of the bat if the batter swings.
I'm glad the Giants got McGee he a strong guy, good to the teammates and fans, and doesn't take bullshit. would want to fight him
I understand the frustrations of that announcer, but he really did need to keep his emotions in check.
Have these announcers ever played a game in their lives? Have they ever read the rule book?
Answer...No!
@Robb Dark what does that have to do with the announcers not knowing the rules?
What was all this about? What happened earlier in the game? I don't know
Johnson was Stantons pinch hitter after he got hit in the face
drew rice Right before that guy, literally the batter before just got hit in the face and had his face broken in pieces and then the next batter he hits him in the hand.
Swaggy Timberlake If you wanna see look up Giancarlo Staton face
Swaggy Timberlake Oh yeah I know. I saw it, he has a special helmet now
They were angry cuz the batter before Fiers hit Giancarlo Stanton in the face
Gotta love Tommy Hutton. I'm glad MLB decided to use the Marlins broadcast because I guarantee you all of the comments here are going to be pro Brewers just like on ESPN. No one sticks up for the hapless Marlins. Get well soon Stanton.
Are you kidding me? ESPN/Sports Center don't talk about the Brewer at all you tool.
I meant the ESPN message boards you silly goose ;)
The replay at 3:04 makes it pretty clear that he swung. The rules don't say anything about whether the bat crossed the plate or whether the batter turns his wrists. It's simply about whether the umpire thinks he tried to hit the ball, and he absolutely did.
The Marlins need to learn how to get out of the way of a pitch.
Shut the fuck up nigga they take it like a man unlike u nigga
U know how many pitches the marlins dodge this year?
Players get thrown at all the time, they get out of the way. Plus, twice? Really?
Stay Classy Marlins Commentator.
Stanton Had 2 Options 1. He Can Get Hit In The Face Or 2. Duck Out Of The Way Below So He Doesn't Get Hit
That announcer should be fired. He was being very disrespectful to the umpires.
Rachel Jodar not to the umpires, but to the Brewers
Does it count as a swing if the ball hits you before you make the full go around???
Lmao commentators trash. He swung. Get over it
Tommy Hutton is the man. Whoever says he's classless or a joke should just fuck off.
Kevin James Most bias announcers? Well of course you think that because you like the Mets. How is your argument even valid?
I hate mlb announcers or spokes people, well the annoying 50 year old guys that repeat the same thing 5 times
Miami seems to have a lot of interesting things go down for them at the end of the season
Whatever actually happen, those commentators are very unprofessional.
Not sure about the rule if you're hit before or during the swing, and it looked like he got hit before the swing
why the fuck is fiers still in the game?!?!?!!
Correct me if im wrong but arent the hands counted as part of the bat? it should be a foul right?
Lortang Nope. The hands being an extension of the bat rule is actually a myth. The rule is if the batter swings, it is a strike, if not, he is awarded first base. Common mistake though.
You dont hit staton then his pinch hitter thats crap
you dont as an announcer approve of a fight needing to happen, or verbally assault an ump as a player. you're a bunch of thugs, with horrible people as announcers
Mike Mcintyre yeah
Awkward asf to see yelich on the marlins after he's the MVP
Lol every comment is about the shit commentary
+HRRYCRRYIMPOSTER Its deserving
I noticed
Mike Fiers didn't mean to do either of them, the ball got away on the Stanton one and with Johnson he was still shook up by what he accidentally did to Stanton, and the very next pitch (with all that despair and anxiety) throws a ball off the mark and clips the next guy and the commentators flip flop over the whole thing
Those announcers are awful...just like Miami baseball.
And Baltimore is so much better okay.
Blake I know, thanks.
Lol Baltimore baseball calling another team a joke lol that's ironic
Fuckin shutup they don't work for the mlb they work for the marlins so they support the marlins not the brewers
And this year the marlins are second place for the nl wild card
I'm looking for the Brewers broadcast of this incident.
Liked 👍
SlimShady9000Mac
and please tell what would the right response be?
mikeshogunlee For the Marlins? Have some class, which McGehee lacked. You don't go at the umpire like that. Ever. The Marlins showed no class in this. Fiers was angry because the Marlins were yelling at him, as SlimShady9000Mac pointed out.
So...
To get this all straight when a pitcher, who has already sent one of your guys to the hospital, hits *another* one of your teammates, you are to calmly speak from your respective bench, in an elevated but non threatening tone,
"Why excuse me good sir could you please refrain from hitting our batters? We understand you may be having an off night, but if your scrupulous behavior continues we will be forced to file a complaint with management, Please and thank you."
Look I am not saying you should let teams run out on to the field with bats and shanks looking to kill someone, but when a highly emotional series of events like the one that transpired in this games happens, people should be cut some slack.
And I don't care if he swung at it or not, when a player gets hit he should be given the damn base!
Fiers was clearly rattled, had no intent, Marlins still have right to be upset, Johnson definitely did swing at the pitch and it was the correct call
Oh and these announcers don't know what they're talking about
He did swing lol
Yes, but it hit him... even if the umpire thought it hit his bat rather than his hand, how can that be called a strikeout? Ridiculous call
If the ball is coming at your face ....you swing
Robert C by rule if the batter is hit and swings the correct call would be a strike. So the call is not ridiculous. If you don't believe me fine, but look it up for yourself.
Robert C Because he swung at the ball and therefore it is a strike.
Menessy27 Yea but lots of people swing at 2-strike pitches. They foul them off. He shouldn't be out!
4 years later... Mike Fiers is still out there
