Super tutorial. That jig is a project all in itself though. I haven’t decided if I’m going to go this route or try it by hand first. I’m building my first archtop and I’m currently on the bindings for the f-holes and then gluing the bracing on for the top. Then I will be ready to tackle the sides.
Just a couple of things, make sure the ebony has been drying for at least a couple of years and also I would thin the sides down to about 1,7 or 1,6 mm before bending.
@@redkitekk Thanks for the quick response. That Ebony guitar you demo’ed in the tapered tail inlay made me drool. Now I’m going to have to go for it. Just wet it and tinfoil wrap after thinning, like you show in this video? Your videos are astounding. Your a true artisan.

Hi, does having the silicone blanket at the bottom make the side bending slightly larger? I thought you would want the wood to be first in the layer, closest to the jig. Cheers.
Jonathan Croft my jig is made so that blanket goes under the wood. The shape of the bending jig is 5 mm smaller than the true outline of the guitar, that way the sides have the right size, but that’s just the way it works for me. I can’t see no reason why the blanket shouldn’t be on top, but you would have to have that in mind when you make your jig.
Hi Pablo-what temperature do you use for bending and how long do you leave it in the mold? I have problems with too much spring back, so I need some advice please as to whether its the temperature and time that may course the problem of spring back. I use your design mold to bend the sides. Thanks Paul
Hi Paul. I wouldn't be able to tell you the temperature, as I don't use a thermometer.I bring the temperature up to the point in which it is too hot to touch, and then I form the shape. I keep it in for a couple of minutes max. You need to keep trying until you find what works for you. However, It is normal to have quite a bit of spring back, in ciphers and maple more than in rosewood. you can extend the time of bending but be careful as ciphers and maple can burn and it will come out black. Rosewood can take more heat, but it can also burn. Often it is necessary to finalise the shape by hand with a bending iron. if you send me your email I can send you a picture with the sides as they come out of the bending jig so that you can see the kind of spring back I get and that might give you an idea of what you need to do. Best wishes Pablo
