The Mari Kondo thing drives me up the wall (and I even took the book out on Libby to double check I was right lol)
Because Mari only said she keeps her collection to 30 books. It was a personal statement. Then she shared ways she keeps what she likes about the book like journaling/handwriting quotes or using a photocopier to make a scrapbook.
She always says if a large collection of any item makes you happy you should keep it.
And the whole reaction to that very small section just turns me into Animal from muppets
Great video as always, I stick to this community for the drama. We are all so unwell. I love that for us.

@MG Larson I have ADHD which has some comorbidities with OCD, and I felt the same way! I feel like I have 2 modes: hoard and destroy. She helped me both let go of things I was holding onto for the wrong reasons and keep the things I really wanted to keep but had decided I 'couldn't'.
I really dislike it when people misinterpret her as someone pushing for minimalism or getting rid of things.

Also Japanese homes are really small. If a person has a massive collection they basically live in a cluttered mess.
The putting them in a wardrobe works for very tiny spaces. Not relevant to western homes with more room.
I wish people would listen to her telling people to keep what brings joy.

The "audiobooks isn't reading" is so unreasonable because sometimes there are books I want to consume but the audiobook is the only version available. For instance, for books currently out of print, the printed word copy isn't to be found anywhere, but my library or libby will still have the audiobook to check out.

💯! Decades ago, I was a snob about audiobooks. Until I found out the smartest guy at my college, winner of a prestigious science fellowship, had such severe dyslexia that he got all his textbooks on "tape" (this was the early 90s). And then I worked with a teen who had very severe cerebral palsy and could not turn pages easily, and loved all kinds of literature (you gotta love a 13 year old Dickens fan), and was very well read because of it, which saved her since even then, kids with CP often got the wrong education because special Ed was not designed well for people who need physical assistance 24/7 but are average+ cognitively & have typical-to-general-society social skills. So yeah, audiobooks must be reading, because the listeners can learn as much or more than sight readers. Most blind people I know also prefer audio to braille, which takes a much longer time to read, esp if one doesn't use it very often. I had business cards that were "brailled" and all my blind colleagues admitted they were not fluent in it 😂

I'm a person who prefers physical books, but my younger sibling has really bad dyslexia. They didn't read a lot growing up, and have recently as an adult gotten super into audiobooks and have surpassed my reading this year for the first time EVER. anyone who is snobbish about audiobooks is ignorant as hell - I'm so thrilled that they've found this love of books and that audiobooks are allowing them to consume books in a way that isn't difficult for them

I have mild dyslexia and audiobooks as well as digital books are SUCH a lifesaver for me.
Between the dyslexia and ADHD, reading printed books is a painfully slow process for me.
I have friends and family that can read multiple books in a week, but I’m doing really well if I can read a print book in a month. It’s just exhausting.
But with digital books I can change the background and font colors (a dark background and light colored letters helps SO much) _and_ I can use fonts like OpenDyslexic and Dyslexie.
And audiobooks not only help the dyslexia but also the ADHD. I can sit still and concentrate on reading for only so long. With audiobooks I can work out, do household chores, drive, knit, or work on my art all while also concentrating on the book.
And instead of being able to read one book every 1-2 months (if that) I can read 2 or 3 in a month (more if I’m trying for a certain goal).
It also means I can read the books my kid is reading in school and be able to discuss it with him, help him with his homework, etc.
(Plus, it’s been so nice to revisit the books I read in middle school and read new middle grade books.)

It’s privilege and classism to say that audiobooks are reading. Go tell poor people around the world who never got to learn to read that, if they can listen to an audiobook, that they’re reading. It would be an insult to tell people who can’t read that listening to audiobooks is reading. YOU can read, and so take for granted the difference.
My daughter’s best friend hasn’t been taught to read (ad he’s 11) because his parents think he’ll magically catch up despite not being sent to school (this is in the US too). He can listen to an audiobook, but can he read? Well, if audiobooks are reading, then yes, he can read. But hand him a book, and he’s clueless because he can’t READ.
Audiobook isn’t READING, but it is consuming stories. You don’t read an audiobook. You listen to an audiobook. Reading means using your eyes or braille to put the letters and words together, and is a vital skill. I’m actually concerned by how many people think listening to an audiobook is the same thing as reading.
We should be glad people are consuming stories, whether they’re listening to an audiobook or reading a book. But we MUST stop saying that audiobooks are reading. It’s an insult and reeks of privilege by those who actually know how to read.

I think another layer to the Bigolas Dickolas thing is that the story was compared to a slash ship they like from Trigun, so a lot of cosplayers started lugging giant posters of the book around at cons (super wholesome). I haven't any experience with Trigun or the book in question so it's just an outsider's perspective, but they're so interlinked that the producer or director of the Trigun reboot tweeted that he bought "that book".

The handbook for mortals debacle happened even faster than you think! Less than 72 hours you say? Correct in a sense, but working together, the book community super sleuths got that title removed from the NYT bestseller list in UNDER 24 HOURS! Lani sarem thinks this is a bragging point, too. After her book was removed, all her copies afterwards had a sticker on the front that said "A new york Times best seller" (and then in small print): "for 23 hours".

Need to finish the video but I'm gonna drop this real fast, first: MARIE KONDO SAID SHE ONLY HAS 30 BOOKS. The entire philosophy behind the Marie Kondo method is to keep what sparks joy. And that’s different for every person. Marie Kondo has never and WOULD NEVER say how much of a specific item you should or shouldn't own. It's not about the "numerical amount" it's about the "emotional value". If having more than 30 books is what makes you happy then KEEP them. If not? DONATE whenever possible because someone else WILL find joy in what you pass on.
That's why I, as a hhoarder, love her. The Marie Kondo method is about your happiness not getting rid of everything for the sake of minimalism. Heck, depending on the person, following the Marie Kondo Method could lead you to being a MAXIMALIST. Savy from Savy Writes Books has a few videos on Marie Kondo and her experiences with following the method and I highly recommend people watch those videos. After this one, if course! Gotta support the algorithm after all! 😉

I think Lindsay Ellis just attracted a lot of critics because she had the "audacity" to critique things that had big fandoms and people did that thing where they pore over every crumb of that person's online existence and Lindsay has been online for A LONG TIME being an elder millennial and was involved in some questionable content, which she had distanced herself from a LONG TIME AGO and was made to feel like she had to defend herself over things that happened at a time when she was very vulnerable. TL;DR: Lindsay make fandom cranky, fandom try to cancel Lindsay, Lindsay make video response and dipped from RUclips.

What I hate about the audiobook discussion: I have visual impairments, as have millions of other readers, and I always feel this stance of "It's not real reading!" completely disregards readers with disabilities. I mean, would they say that wheelchair dancing is not real dancing?
Besides, for a 2019 study ("The Representation of Semantic Information Across Human Cerebral Cortex During Listening Versus Reading Is Invariant to Stimulus Modality"), they scanned the brains of participants while they read or listened to stories. The result? They found that it stimulated the exact same cognitive and emotional areas of the brain, and that the way we process language is pretty much independent of which senses we use for input.
I may or may not have quoted the sheet out of this study over the years.

Man, I HATED that meme. Because she said SHE doesn't have more than 30 books at a time. That that was what made HER happy. Marie didn't "come for bookworms", she was misquoted and people who made owning books their personality came for her.
The ENTIRE philosophy of the Marie Kondo method is to KEEP what sparks joy and DONATE what doesn't if it's still in good enough condition to do so.
So the meme would more accurately be something like:
Marie: "I see that you you have 30 books on your nightstand. Are there more?"
Reader: "Yes there are. Is that a problem?"
Marie: "That depends, do they all spark joy? If they do, then that's not a problem at all!"
Don't get ne wrong, I LOVE all of the books I own (WAY more than 30) but I think it's a problem that so many people TO THIS DAY still think she said that. It drives me up the wall.
