    I used to own one of these and used it for a decade or so - pretty solid device. After this video, I see potential parts for a new patchbay and some fun meters for whatever the heck I want! I'm on the hunt for a broken mixer!

    I have a lot of love for those old desks, but the lack of automation and scene recall does mean that you are limited to working on one project at a time with them, and the amount of cabling required to hook it them up fully is crazy! A very interesting teardown, and I got the impression that was about as dignified an ending as something like that could hope to have :-)

      +Eddy Deegan Thanks Eddy. Its spirit will live on in the next life and hopefully I will try and make use of its donated parts to save the life of other electronic gear waiting for transplants. :-)

    I used to have one of these in my basement studio for quite some years. It's actually a near replica of a Mackie 24/8. Quite alright value for money. Unfortunately, Behringer used inferior parts everywhere, so the sound of the Mackie and the knockoff are worlds apart. Just subscribed to your channel, btw. Interesting stuff here! Keep it up.

    To use the hot air gun is not daft at all. I have done this when I was a kid, a lot. It was my biggest source of components for building stuff and I am still using some of them today. I even repaired music gear (DeltaLabs delay) with salvaged components of an old Commodore computer, in this case the 16kx1 DRAM. All salvaged like this. They usually surive that without any damage. I am surprised that this idea was new to you. I really like that you take the effort to give the components a second life in another unit or as a hobby project. Oh and at my work there is a SMD workplace, also equipped with a hot air gun. I just had to use it last week.

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  8 лет назад

      +Chip Guy Vids Hi I have the smaller SMD hot air gun but I was not expecting anything to survive from the use of the paint stripper. thats why I had never tried it before. all I need to do now is find the Air scoop attachments that came with it so i can direct the heat in a more precise way and hopefully a new way (for me) to collect components.

      +markusfuller Yes that is a good idea. I got a smaller nozzle that just sticks on the top (about 1cm diameter) and one of these, they are good for DIL40 and longer SUB-D & IDC connectors: www.bosch-pt.com/de/de/accocs/image/product/prodimg/5315/181665.jpg/?maxwidth=250&maxheight=250

      There are about 3 or 4 nozzles for this paint stripper somewhere but my house is like a Tardis. small but lots of gear inside. trouble is it is very difficult to find things.

    A fascinating look inside a mixer board. Now, if you can track down a vintage radio station mixer from the 50s. I actually used one as a board op for a local AM station here, back in the 80s. The board dated back to the 50s. Had 7, or 8 rotary pots, and three analog needle type meters. Also worked with the ones made in the 80s, to. :) Thanks for posting this.

      +ThomasGrillo Thanks Thomas. I removed one of those old mixers from a small studio years ago, I think it was an allen & heath and it had proper wooden sides on it, a thing of beauty but sadly it went to the recycling yard.

    Hi Markus. I have just seen this Video for the first time and it was really really great. I have just recently purchased one of these in good condition with everything working except the tape returns mix B Channel Group 41 - 48 which are not passing audio through to board so will have to take it apart eventually to do some repairs so it was great and very helpfull seeing this video of internals from the Mx8000 Thank you

    Ive de-soldered like that before but had the board horizontal with all the components facing down, just gave the board a couple knocks while doing it. Worked wonders on high component count boards, tested a lot of the components afterwards and had no real issues.

    Many thanks for another very interesting video, Markus!
    Don't worry about the video length too much, I think you have a very good feeling for the optimum lengths each time. You will not be able to please all people anyway!
    I like the mindset to recycle things, which is also a key thought in this video.
    The trick with the LEDs really surprised me... seems like that "there is no business like show business" also applies to the equipment used, haha. Many thanks, David

      @markusfuller  8 лет назад

      +David Mood Thank You David. Its always a difficult thing trying to make something from lots of video recording. I do cut out many pieces but I think they are boring or long pieces that are better removed so as to make the video flow from beginning to end and try my best to make it interesting. It takes ages to edit the video but if just one person gets some entertainment or useful information from the video then I am happy I have shared something. Many thanks from Markus

    Markus: tip on rapid-desoldering: I use a paint remover heating gun and the components just fall off the PCB after heating it up for a bit of time.

      as soon as I typed this, your video arrived at the part with the paint stripper :-)

      Bart Coninckx Hi Bart. yes I am doing that now with one of those bosch paint strippers. very handy and so many components to reuse

    • @bartconinckx
      @bartconinckx 6 лет назад

      What I did after being able to acquire a mass of old PCBs is turn them upside down, heat the solderside with a paint stripper and just tapped lightly with a hammer on the PCB, while holding the PCB above a bucket. easiest way to get a bunch of components in a very short time. the only parts not being really happy with this were IC sockets, those would bend slightly.

    cool because i have the behringer sx4882. i record to a fostex d2424lv and this mixer works nicely with it and my outboard gear. how cool that you are able to take this apart! that mixer is a good one. mimics the mackie console!

    I've got 3 of those Behringher mixers. 1 is a parts donor. i have 2 meter bridges. The Behringher was an exact copy of a better built Mackie desk. Court case etc.
    Mackie owners were buying the Behringher meter bridges as the Behringher was £120 compared to Mackie £330 for their bridge. There's a market for that bridge btw.
    thanks for the paint stripper tip. quality suggestion.

      no worries Marcus. I enjoy your videos. You appear to have taken apart most of my studio haha :-)
      BTW... if you want a good laugh .. you'll find on the internet that 25kg PSU for the desk was built with inherent failure in the design. Capacitors are mismatched and chips blow. Causes desk to go into red light mode with piercing test tone blaring. Read up on it. its typical Behringer garbage :-)
      I've had my fun with repair visits to my engineer.

    Hey, just found this video while looking for information about what horrors I'll find in our MX9000 mixing console; hopefully it's just dodgy solder joints on those ribbon connectors and some flux and good solder will fix 'er. Channel 9 has no gain, Channel 13 only has gain when the input reaches a certain level, and Channel 17 is completely unresponsive. Also, I need to look into why Mix B is unbalanced (other than cheap) and if I can reliably balance it without coloring the audio toooo bad, as I'd like to use it as a stereo aux send.

  • @rot_studios

    This makes a nice digital vs. analog comparison video ( for Behringer consoles) combined with your other mixing desk video :P

  • @Neffers_UK
    @Neffers_UK 8 лет назад

    This looks like Behringers version of the Mackie 24:8:2, even down to the "Mix B" functions, and having to buy the meter bridge separately. I use the Mackie regularly, and have done a few repairs to it and even the board layout is the same internally. They were always copying stuff, making their own version of the Pioneer DJM Mixers for example.

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  8 лет назад

      +Jon Simmons (Neffers) Yes its a pity it had to be stripped down but technology moves forward and my allen & heath qu-16 mixer is a third of the weight & size with effects etc and usb stream & multitrack recording to hard disk etc etc. dont get me wrong behringer is made down to a price but I find some of their gear quite good for the price.

      Music Group have 'recently' made the acquisition of TC Group too (Tannoy, Lab Gruppen, Lake, TC Electronics, TC Helicon and TC Applied Technologies), it's quite a nest of companies for Behringer to be amongst. Lets hope they don't 'frankenstein' too many products and continue to make viable budget yet desirable ones.

    I recently discovered a metallic harmonic ringing noise when I am switching the meterbridge to 'channel'. I have searched the internet and found some people with that same issue. It can also be stopped by pulling out one of the multi-connector cables from the desk to the meterbridge.
    Some people hinted at the power supply as possible origin of the noise. Where would you look for it, Markus?

    Hello Markus,
    Great video as always and I like that this video was longer than normal, so for me personally you may make more of that longer video's. But I know, more time is more work to edit and render so no problem when you don't have the time for it.
    With lots of respect for Dave but your teardown was more interesting and the way you eplain how things work are a lot better. But Dave isn't into the music electronics so maybe that's also the difference and that you know where you are talking about.
    Looking forward to the next one and greetings from Roel ( RoelTyros ).

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  8 лет назад

      +RoelTyros Hello Roel. Its a strange subject getting the video lengths just right, some people complained about video number 70 being too long and not getting to the point instantly and theres the others that can seem too short. I dont think there is any magic number in minutes that can please everybody so I just make the video then edit it trying to pull out any long pauses and some are longer than others but I do not stick to a rule of length of time. I think this last video was just about right for the subject it contained. But thankyou very much for letting me know as it is something I occasionally think about and wonder what people think about the length. Best wishes from Markus

    • @TheSlowGrowth
      @TheSlowGrowth 8 лет назад

      +markusfuller Don't waste too much time thinking about how long videos should be. I think you're doing it just right. I guess it's not so much about the total time (viewers can pause and go on later if it's too long). It's way more important to cut out long pauses and avoid repeating the same thing again and again (as happens often on the EEVblog).
      Maybe this is a good point to thank you for the effort you put into making these videos! I really enjoy watching! Please keep it up, it's fantastic!

    • @RoelTyros
      @RoelTyros 8 лет назад

      markusfuller For me personally I it doesn't bother not really to me how long a video is, and when it is to long that it is so simple to pause it. So even it is a short one than it is absolutely no problem for me or a longer one with some things repeated is also no problem.
      Most I like about your video's is also the subject and as you know I am also just like Organaut an musician. And than a look inside of all that equipment is very interesting, and also tips how to repair.
      But also the way you explain is more understandable for also people like me, just hobbyist and not a professional with electronics. Somebody like Dave of the EEVblog is sometimes to technical and than it gets boring after a time. With lots of respect for Dave of course, but for the simple hobbyist sometimes a bit to complicated.
      Anyway, go further like the way you make your video's, and that typical English way of making humor is great !! I am crazy about old series like Fawlty Towers and Are you being served haha.
      Many thanx and greetings from Roel !

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  8 лет назад

      Thank You Roel. That was interesting to read your comment. Yes I will always try and let the video's take as long as they take but try and cut away boring or non interesting parts. some people want instant video all over in under 2 minutes but I cannot explain anything that way and I think a few minutes to talk about the thing i am about to take apart or repair can be interesting to some people and those that want just the end result can skip forward.

    I have an old Yamaha Clavinova where one of the keys doesn't work unless one of the keys directly next to it is pressed. I was cleaning the contacts on the keyboard when my screwdriver fell on one one of the dozens of diodes on the underside of the contact board. The diode and solder points look fine, just one of the leads was slightly bent. Could a damaged diode cause such a problem?

    • @markusfuller
      @markusfuller  8 лет назад

      +hasso0n Yes I would certainly think about replacing that diode. they allwork together making the keys you press send the voltages into a sort of Matrix which is figured out by the diodes. do you have a multimeter?. if so check the diodes close by and see if you get the same reading from the dodgy one. remember they sort of conduct one way but not the other. apologies if you already know this I just dont know about your electronics knowledge.

      Hello MrHarmonicminor, the sliders are easily serviceable but a lot of the switches are sealed units and would take a bit more work to try and fix them. It would be easier if you could source new ones and replace them rather than dismantle them as they have tiny springs latches etc inside.

      Hi everyone.im pulling my hair out.lol.I have a 2002 12rq unity peavey mixer.It has developed anoise such as,when i plug it in to power i hear a click assumming it is a small contactor and then it immediately starts humming.so anyway my delimma is that i have every piece of nut ,knob there is on top preparing to disassemble the top so i can get inside.Can you possibly tell me if they're clips or ther fastener that is preventing the sides from coming apart to further disassembly.Thanx in advance.

    Hey do you have any tips for getting through stripped screw heads? I purchased a very dirty Tascam M-512 the other day, works great, but has some scratchyness here and there, so I thought to get into it and get out what gunk I can. So, I was trying to get into it, and of course, one of the first screws I go for is stripped.

      +Terror Van Hi I have had this problem myself and do not have the answer. I just work with small pliers if I can get a grip on the head or have even used a dremel to cut a slot for a straight screwdriver to fit. other than that I do not think there is an easy way.

    • @Neslekkim
      @Neslekkim 8 лет назад

      +Terror Van If you can reach the head (not countersunk), then I use this type of pliers: www.precisehandtools.com/screw-pliers/engineer-pz-58-neji-saurus-gt-multi-purpose-pliers-with-screw-extractor-jaws
      And if it's not an flat-blade screw, I also use left-hand drill bits

      Yeah, I get it. I'm off buying a grey original mx 8000 tomorrow for 130 euro's, revised 3 years ago, incl. meterbridge.
      But also I understand Markus' view. The value sum of all the parts he can collect out of one mx8000 is also bigger than having to buy seperate parts online, with extra shipping costs and waiting time. I have 3 mackie 8 bus mixers here (32, 24 and 16.8), of which one is going to get sacrificed to fix the other two. The 16.8 will be saved for sure, incl meterbridge, I really like the size. Not sure if I want to save the 32 or the 24. Also depends on how many good parts are left from the 32 and 24 after the 16.8 is in top condition, so bigger chance the 24.8 wil make it and I will modify the 32.8 casing as a double 19 inch rack holder or something. But If I can save the 32.8, this will have priority. Bigger number is always better, right :p ?
      I got the 32.8 for 175 euro's, the 24.8 for 60 euro's (left masterchannel is defective, also lots of sticky buttons and scrappy faders) and the 16.8 with meterbridge for 210 euro's.

      +markusfuller Possibly another Behringer mixer. I had a 32 channel that lasted about 8 years then died. My tech couldn't fix it (would have cost too much, so I bought a new Yamaha) so pretty much the same thing happened to it.

      +Ajetunmobi Mike A Ogooluwa Thank You Mike I too have difficulties finding some parts and I can spend hours on google trying to find things sometimes. the companies do not always want to send out replacement parts which can be kind of irritating. but you just have to try and now and again some of them will help out. as Korg did when I requires a replacement touchscreen.

    Markus, is there a role for some one doing what you have done? It would only be viable for developing nations to do this because of their low wages. There must be billions of pounds binned every year.

      +Anoop Sahal I think we should do this more often and try and reuse things instead of burning and burying so much waste. I know some materials are broken down and reused but I think if we try then we could do a little bit more.
