    “And I dream like Martin Luther
    Fall asleep to the sound of the hoover”
    I don’t know if all the wordplay layers are intentional but obviously there’s Martin Luther Kings famous “I have a dream” speech, but then there is also “fall asleep to the sound of the Hoover” (vacuum cleaner) but also J Edgar Hoover was reportedly involved in Martin Luther Kings death ("fall asleep"), and that's just the 1st few bars! There are also lots of obscure 70's and 80's UK references which shows they are definitely involved in the writing process.

    They've got so many old man and UK specific references and slang that most people don't even spot half of their doubles and triples and themes that run throughout.

  • @TruckJohnson
    @TruckJohnson Год назад +56

    This Yank loves these guys. When the subject comes up about who writes their stuff, I just can't imagine anyone giving these bars to 2 old guys. If I was ghostwriting rhymes like these, I'd be selling them to someone way more famous for a lot more money. Plus, I don't think anyone under 60 could mix that old school slang in to the verses like they do.

    • @pointsur67
      @pointsur67 Год назад +8

      Exactly! You can hear in their lyrics that even if they have writers, they have a HUGE say in what goes in. What current writer or rapper knows about Southeast London Cockney slang?? I have even seen some young UK RUclips reactors get confused at some of their references!

    Cake - money obviously
    Battenberg is a cake
    It's checker patterned cake which the ambulances in the UK are checkered patterned, saying he'll put you in the hospital
    Battenberg - bat and burg, could be a stretch but take a bat to him and then burgle his home rob him of his shit, now he's broke for trying to fuck with your money

    I truly believe that they write their own bars or at least have a huge part in the writing. Go back and list to their very first video 'Shut Your Mouth'. Even then, you could hear the potential. You can hear their progression with each video. If they had writers, it would all sound the same. Also, you can see them putting real feeling and emphasis on certain lines. Let's not forget that Bas is a former professional musician and music teacher. Bas plays the piano, trumpet, saxophone, and several other wind instruments. He also can pen songs, so doing rap would be fairly easy to him.

    This track is one of their best! They get better with age!
    Michelin reference is tyres and then linked to Michelin chef (which is a top chef) hence to reference to food!
    I can't see how they have ghost writers because of the old cockney talk (I'm in my 50s, from East London and you have to be a certain age and from the endz to fully understand some lyrics...for example, "Knock down ginger" was a 'game' we played as children when you knocked on someone's door and then disappeared when they came to the door to answer...that's 1960s/1970s ish! 🤣. Also, the "Mr Ben" reference...that was a 1970s-1980s cartoon where Mr Benn changed his suits all the time to do certain jobs. You have to be older than 40 to remember that 🤣🤣🤣). I understand their grandchildren help them out a bit with modern references but these guys definitely lead their writing! 🔥🔥🔥

    • @namco003
      @namco003 Год назад

      I feel like cockney slang would be really hard for the youngers to use, because they don't use old terms, but know exactly what they mean, because the elders still use the terms. That's three generations of slang words changing. I came up on British comedy and sitcoms of the 60-80s, and a load of terms PnB use, were very much a part of those shows, so I totally get the slang.(American here)
