All your videos are useful. I'm doing my flat up which I've just moved in to with loads of work to do. I can't tell you how useful your videos have been. All this is second nature to a pro like yourself but to many others, these videos are full of essential information. Keep up the very much appreciated work. You're doing a grand job!
When I first read the title of this video I couldn't think what you could possibly find to say about a spirit level. But you proved me wrong admirably. Very nice video and I've learned a thing or two. Next time I won't be such a sceptic. Thanks!
Really useful, especially the tip on how to calculate a fall. Just wondering why no one seems to make a level with measurements on them? I quite often need 2 level holes a certain distance apart & end up resting a rule on the level, what trick am I missing?
+Chris Shepherd I'm not sure why they don't put a measure on a spirit level, but it's a cracking idea.I've lost count of the times I mark things out with a tape, then use the level to draw in the lines! Thanks for the comment ;-)
Thanks for the video, the test to check if the level tool is accurate/faulty was very useful. *One question; some spirit levels have multiple guide lines, are these also used for measuring a 1:100 fall?
The Forge 1200mm level you showed has two gradation markings either side of centre of the horizontal, so rather than using shims as you showed, is it possible to read a fall straight off the vial by having the bubble touch or centre on either of the outer markings? I have that same level and have some drainage to lay that wants a fall, so wondering if that's what the markings are for? Should be easy enough to test it, just wondered if you knew already?
I don’t understand how looking at two sides of the same bubble will confirm its accuracy. They will look the same because you’re looking at the same thing. It would be really helpful if you showed us a level that was inaccurate - that is, the appearance of the bubble varied according to the side you viewed it from.
Great vid! Have to use shims when leveling milk tanks too so the milk will run out the tap ok! Got a couple of stabila levels that have been very good and a Rabone one from when i first started working.
Hi so if you were a total novice, and were going to attempt a patio by yourself, that was 360cm by 360cm, and using slabs that were 60cm x 60cm and 35mm thick, and usually people are saying that you would have a fall of 1cm for every 1 metre, or 1.5 metres, would having a touching bubble on each slab be a good rule of thumb. Or would it have to be more than a touching bubble eg a little past the increment, because you said a touching bubble was 1mm, so if I had a 600 x 600 slab, following your principal of 1mm for every 100mm, then my level would have to be out by 6mm, or would that be too steep a slope for a patio, I know this was a few years ago but I hope you will answer.
If I wanted a fall of 1mm per M, I would just tape a 1mm shim to one side of the level (assuming the level is 1M long) and use that. If the level was 500mm long, you could add a 0.5mm shim to the level etc. 👍
@@ultimatehandyman Hi thanks but it's a fall of 1cm for every meter or 1.5 meters, as the industry standard is supposed to be a fall of 1:80 for patios, Thanks.
I realize this video is a bit dated but wanted to know if it is EVER OK to use a level using the unmachined edge as a reference. Just watched a video of a young man using one side ways while laying a retaining wall. My gut said What!, but thought I'd ask. Cheers!
It depends how accurate it needs to be. Normally builders spirit levels are not that accurate (unlike an engineers spirit level). In most cases it will be fine ;-) Thanks for the comment
Hi, I have a old Stabila and the vials are quite hard to read, they seem cloudy and you need a light to read them. Can these be rebuilt in the UK. It is better made than anything out today at least 20 year old thanks
It's easier with something like this- fave.co/3kOkURC Or you can set one side to the required gradient, then use a long spirit level, use that a 90 degrees to the formwork at a few different points to set the other formwork.
When i was an apprentice, I was sent to buy some spirit level bubbles, the guy on the trade counter told me they had went bad and burst and they wouldnt be getting any more in stock.....
Its important to add that a spirit level is always correct while despite her protestations the wige may not be correct, in fact in my experience they tend to have one leg considerably longer than the other.
Good advice...never buy cheap ones...Early Egyptians bought theirs at Elwooly,s in Cairo ....the original Pyramids where supposed to be Squareiads.... not many people know this...

Thank you especially for bit about how to use spirit level to create a very gentle slope, such as in decking or a patio. Learn something every video.
Glad it was helpful!

Excellent video as always. Very informative. Keep up the great work.
I’m glad you found the video useful
Thanks for the comment 👍
Extremely useful tip, thanks for sharing it. Greetings from PR with my respects.
Great video. Bought my first one, which is Torpedo to fit a glass bath screen
Thanks for the comment

Not sure, I would assume that they are for that, but I’ve never used one. I normally just use shims to work out a fall for a deck etc. 👍

Thanks, I did not know that. I'll take a look the next time I'm in the garage.
Thanks for the comment
On some levels those lines do show 1/4 inch rise per foot for plumbing, shower floors etc
Well done and very informative. Would like to see same info presented in inches and degrees f cox
No metric is how intelligent people measure... inches is for Americans and cock measuring

Cool video! I’m from the USA, so I’m having trouble identifying your accent. Where are you from?
I'm from Darwen, Lancashire, U.K

Would that 1 in 100 drop be the same for gutters? I think someone's installed my gutters level 🙄
I think it is normally 1 in 350 but any fall is better than them being level!
Thanks for the comment 👍
Can anyone tell me what does those 2 lines means on some spriti level? Some spirit level has 2 lines on both sides of the bubble

JAMMASTERconnor Unfortunately I don't think the vials in Stabilla spirit levels can be replaced.
Also my Spirit level has a double line, is that for setting gutters?
I'm not sure what the double lines are for, without searching Google 😂
Thanks for the comment 👍

U got look after your levels as it crashes down
Avoid Poundland spirit levels then?

Yes, unless what you are doing is not critical ;-)
Thanks for your help

I don't think my spirit level is working properly. Where can I buy a new bubble for it?
The same place you buy tartan paint from.
When i was an apprentice, I was sent to buy some spirit level bubbles, the guy on the trade counter told me they had went bad and burst and they wouldnt be getting any more in stock.....

Since I've requested a mark of a pipe on a spirit level when installing a waste pipes
