The 7-headed cobra at 3:00 is resembled in a stone carving at Sala Kaew Ku (Wat Khaek), located near Nong Khai, just south of Laos, across the Mekong River in north Thailand.
That part of Laos, used to be part of the Khmer Empire. Once upon a time, Khmer Empire stretched from northern Malaysia to China, and from the South China Sea to Myanmar. Not saying that snake sculpture of Laos was Khmer style art, but Khmer culture could have influenced Laotians just like it did with the Thais. The naga (serpent) with three, five, seven-headed were typical Khmer style. Naga sculptures could be seen in a lot of places in Cambodia even today. Legend has it that Khmers were descendants of the Naga King. The first ruler of Funan was a female ruler by the name of Soma. Kambu Swayambhuva was a princely Indian sage who sailed from India to Cambodia and met Soma. He ended up marry Queen Soma.
The documentation of Cambodia was actually produced in 1910 where a couple of Americans took a journey to Cambodia and headed to Angkor Wat. The film was left in an old house, and the owner who took the documentation of this film had died. The film was discovered in America by an unknown family and later sold and released on videotape (the title ‘Angkor’). You may find this documentation at Something Weird video in Seattle, Washington. I had thie film.
That would make sense. This footage can't be from 1937. Because 1937 was just two years before the break out of World War II. Technologies had advanced by that time including movie reel films/cameras, ships, and plans. This footage has that early 20th century feel. Just look at the boat, it was a steam engine type of boat and 1910 was just two years before the sinking of the Titanic. Good info!👍
PreahVihear, how could I get a copy of this video? Is it longer than this? You should donate a copy to Rithy Panh's documentation project in Phnom Penh.
Very beautiful. It's a shame that the Khmer Rouge messed up our economy severely. The good news is, Cambodia grew rapidly ever since. Also, I wouldn't be born if it weren't for our violent past.
The history that Khmers had around 1,200 stone tablets and also the early accounts from Chinese diplomats. If you guys were not from China, then where were you from?!!! Ancient Khmers had settled there between 6000 to 7000 BCE. The Tais of your ancestors were chased down by the Mongols out of Nanchao and/or Yunnan, China. Early carvings at Angkor (the Capital of the 600 years plus Khmer Empire) indicated so. Your ancestors came down, settle in Khmer territories, and tricked Khmer tribes to rebel against the monarchy. Upon seeing the greatness of the Khmers, your ancestors sought to mimic Khmer culture. If you fail to see what or where your culture and language had the influences from, then you are either in denial or know nothing about the history of mainland Southeast Asia!
Wow, how interesting. It's interesting to see the things that haven't changed and the things that have changed a lot. The environment looked like it was more healthy back then than now, with more tall trees.
Great movie on Cambodia! Thanks you, AhmekKhmer. I hope Khmers will enjoy this great movie. I want to buy this movie DVD for my collection. Anybody knows?

It's PEEK--not PEAK.
