The song is set to the melody of "Lauriger Horatius" - the same tune "O Tannenbaum" was taken from. The lyrics are from a nine-stanza poem written by James Ryder Randall (1839-1908) in 1861. The state's general assembly adopted "Maryland, My Maryland" as the state song on April 29, 1939.
The song's words refer to Maryland's history and geography and specifically mention several historical figures of importance to the state. The song calls for Maryland to fight the Union and was used across the South during the Civil War as a battle hymn. It has been called America's "most martial poem".

I learned of this as a CHRISTMAS Hymn
Boa noite, um bonito hino sensacional. Parabéns pelo vídeo.
I'm from Maryland
I have a great version for the new anthem:
The greatest crabs are on thy shore,
Maryland, my Maryland!
The greatest beaches at thy door,
Maryland, my Maryland!
Make the great Old Bay spread some more, from Chesapeake to Baltimore,
And thus we say to you some more,
Maryland, my Maryland!
Proud to be from this amazing state..., the best one by far in the USA 🇺🇸
Yes
Too late now, they took it out
They saw that comment that you made and then took it out
@Kade Daivis they did change it in 2020 actually. Maryland doesn’t have a state song
Why tf did I never realize we had a song 😭
Sjws want to take this away and say it is offensive. What is wrong with people?
It’s a confederate song, so it’s anti America
@@brremsilverte.9022 Really the song was used in both Union and Confederate Maryland Regiments.
@@lawrencebico1861 no it wasn’t
Amazing 🇺🇸❤
🐐
boys and girls maryland
Such a weird song for a union state to officially recognize. This is like the audio equivalent of a guy flying the stars and bars in West Virginia
That's what I was thinking. I never knew the lyrics before. Apparently it's being ditched.
How is it weird
@@bruhz_089 it’s song about joining the confederacy. Maryland never joined the confederacy
It is weird, but Maryland wasn't exactly on one side. It was very much split for most of that if I remember correctly (they started talking of going with the north, then the others went south and etc etc.). And that's how the song got those lyrics yet was always seen as a northern state.
Wir machen Amerika wieder groß, hat Donald Trump gesagt. Er behält recht. Aber leider auch auf Kosten seiner Freunde.
Das Lied ist großartig. 😂
numbers maryland
The "despot" in the first verse refers to Abraham Lincoln. This is one of the reasons we need a new state song, or at least new verses.
Chicken Maryland
Haha
Fortunately, this horrid song has now been banished to the dustbin of history. It is no longer the official state song of Maryland!
What is wrong with the song?
@@Upcamehill Well let's see... it refers to Lincoln as a despotic tyrant and encourages Marylanders to take up arms against the US military.
This is my first time to hear.
My thought was that the despotic tyrant was King George |||
@@jamesbulldogmiller In fact I think that song can be used against King George III (as despot, Tyrant and Vandal) and against the British in the American Revolution.
