It's good to be able to accurately quantify polution levels especially for evidence. Though there are some pollutants that humans can't smell directly.e.g. Carbon monoxide . We can smell smoke. Isn't it " wierd" how humans tend to even like a mild smell of wood smoke. In a modern culture ( where healthier alternatives exist) ,People whom choose ( emotionally enjoy) to sit around or are within close proximity to naked flames, that are oblivious to the various toxins that burning solid fuels such as wood create, is a example of " stone age brain psychology". The question is why has the average human evolved to not detect the smell of smoke accurately.i.e. A poison ( biological pollution ). I.e. We know that humans spent a significant part of their evolutionary history in Hunter gatherer cultures. Fire was a major component( a tool) for human success as fire provided humans with warmth, cooking and protection from predators ( e.g. lions etc ). However, most animals are terrified of fire. Thus my hypothesis is that over evolutionary time humans evolved that lost their fear of fire ( within the context of controling small amounts of fire.i.e. were selected for due to the ' less fear , more control of fire ' adaptation leading to reproductive success). In other words. In the past their was a evolutionary benefit for people to have the psychology to be drawn to " camp fires". The negative health consequences of smoke inhalation ( which typically will kill well over reproductive age ) were out weighed by the benefits open fires provided. So, this may explain why the average humans olfactory system does not sense ( associate) ' poison!' when they " sense" wood smoke in the environment ( air). Today in modern cultures people choosing to sit around smokey camp fires ( with all the associated toxins ) is mainly just , one of many, comparably dumb ( thoughtless) malaptaptive behavoiurs that humans choose to do , due to their brains being " wired" in the past. I.e. The Evolution of the average ( majority) human psyc hasn't caught up with the pace of technological change ( combined with being biologically illiterate) . Thus the outdated technology of burning stuff is a popular human behavior today as it was millions of years ago.

Amazing idea. Air quality is at a all time low..
