My grandma showed me how to cook when I was growing up. Even as a child of 3 I worked cleaning beef, pork & chicken that my grandfather had butchered. My grandma showed me how to make this a slight bit different. She added green bananas and at least one plantain sliced in rounds plus it had batata blanca and lots of Spanish veggies that we grew in our garden. She added pig feet and ham hogs lots of olives and even cabbage. She would grate a banana and plantain season it a bit and make masa balls which she would drop in the pot when the sancocho was boiling.. I love how my grandma made it back in the 50s and I memorized all her recipes.. I still make the traditional Spanish white rice with tosino.. My cooking will never be as good as my grandma but when I cook it reminds me of her.. I will make this more simple recipe you made and try it cause nowadays my health is not to good and cooking has become hard to do. Wish you could come and visit. If you ever in PA you are welcome to visit and I will share some little cooking secrets.. lol.. Love all your videos. They are so easy to follow.. Heard you have opened a restaurant. Good Luck! May Your Business Bloom and May God Bless You In All You Do..
Such a lovely story about your grandparents. And yes my mom made it very similar to yours. But this is why I push my son and niece to cook like my grandparents, and parents use to. So that they will not lose those traditions. I hope your health improves. God Bless You.
Your story is lovely. You should write the recipes down and maybe some of your memories to hand down to the next generation so that your grandma’s memories etc remains alive. You brought back memories with the tocino, just like my mom & did you used to use lard instead of cooking oil?!?! Omg!! God bless! 💖
Wepa. As a Nuyorican who is still learning his culture, this video was beautifully done. There is so much internalized shame and pain in our communities, when instead we should be focusing on our Puerto Rican hospitality and unity. Thank you for this video!
My mother-in-law is from Mayaquez, Puerto Rico and since I have been cooking a lot of Freakin Rican recipes for my hubby she is amazed how a "Gringa" like me can cook like a native Puerto Rican. Thats the Best compliment I can get from her. She doesn't give them often. This Sancocho recipe is the "Bomb"!! Thank you Sooo Much!
Finally I can learn how to make sancocho... My mom never allowed my sister or myself near the stove... My mom was a clean freak... Looks so good... Now I'm going to be making sancocho all the time..I luv sancocho. Tysm...👍
Thank you so much for sharing this! My mother passed away in December and unfortunately she took with her all her delicious Puerto Rican recipes! I will give this a try tomorrow!
Okay. so I live on the lower east side of Manhattan and we only have one Puerto Rican Restaurant named "Adela's", and she makes an awesome Sancocho!! But yesterday I tried your Freakin Rican sancocho recipe. I followed your recipe detail by detail, I even found the smoked turkey wings. OMG!!!! It was so delicious that my family kept saying "Adela who?" lol thanks again. I applaud and recommend this recipe to everyone! It makes me proud to be Boricua!!!!!!!!!
How are you? WOW Omg Thank you so much for the compliment. I as well love Adelas on the lES. I love that place so this means so much to us as we really try to stand out. Glad you loved it. Thank u thank u. I love you for following us!
abigailtorres416 I’m also from the LES! Not sure if you’ve tried el Castillo de jagua they have 2 locations in lower Manhattan It’s a Dominican restaurant but their food is so good 😊 I live for the chicharones de pollo
I used to live on the LES. You know on one corner, I think it might have been Orchard St or Rivington, there was a cuchifrito place I used to buy alcapurrias at. I miss that. I went to Seward Park too, when Ratners was on Delancey St. It has changed!!!
Can tell me if you brown the tostones first for the sancocho. and then put them in the pot with all the ingredients. I live in South Carolina now and it's hard to get all the ingredients dude plantains down here $0.59 each LOL
Hello I’m Mexican,I really enjoyed watching your video very detailed in how to make Sancocho my hubby who’s Boriqua is gonna love even more with this recipe lol I love cooking can’t wait to make this delicious Dish of yours I’m not boricua and hope to become one..
I remember my mother cooking a sancocho (we call it puchero). She made it the Puerto Rican way and I never knew how to make it just right. Thanks for your recipe. Brings back good memories eating sancocho.
I just subscribed to your channel... I'm doing the sancocho tomorrow...hopefully it looks as good... please keep sharing recipies... I'll be ordering sofrito and pasteles soon
Cooking should be known to both male and female. It has its benefits. It's not written on stone it's a womans job only. We are in the year 2020...EVERY man and woman should know how to cook.👍😊😉
@NYCRudeBoy Wow your RUclips name sure describes you. Ok caveman you can relax now. Take care and be safe. Wear your facemask when outdoors in crowds..😷👍
@NYCRudeBoy Yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s you should be the one doing the growing up shtick. If you really think women should be the only one cooking for the men with the excuse of the men being the breadwinner, which is a rather redundant and repetitive of an argument, I think you need to reevaluate your mindset and grow up. Your logic is asinine. Women don’t need to slave for you just because you’re working, regardless if you’re in marriage or not. And nobody said you have to be the one working and cooking while the women stay at home. You people always assume that, then again what do we expect from folks like you. Marriage is not one-sided, it’s supposed to be cooperation and collaboration between the two.But alas, there are single mothers out there who have to be working long hours on end and having to come home to cook for the family so your point is very much invalid. P.S. The name calling you received is the LEAST of your problem. What you need to be prioritising is that male ego you put out to the world. Pendejo
I am an 18 year old boricua, my grandma passed away while teaching me recipes. This is close to home, I want to learn more and more. This recipe is amazing. Gracias❤️❤️
You should definitely honor her by learning as much as you can speak with other family members as well because we all know abuela added that extra something to make the recipes special 💖
UGH, puerto rican men who were raised well, and who cook, yes love they are very picky, very detailed and clean in the kitchen and strict as hell, just like us women, when I cook my kids know not to be in the kitchen even my guest and by kids I mean 23-24-and 26 yr old, we always call them our kids....... is a boricua thing, we hate people speaking over the stove, whipping their hair, uncovering the pots and pans, we rinse everything we use and wash right after. & the habbit of, always wipping down counters and stove as we cook. Worst if they grew up in PR, I was raised the PR way, tho my mom was european, but my father showed me my roots and they took over. They are strict with everything so yeah. LOL let me shut up already.
How he stick his hand in the Vianda while preparing the food and tasting the soup and putting the spoon in the corner of the pan......all spanish food Makers does that unless u selling it to the public....cause that's not good hygiene...
I am Jamaican but my boyfriend is Puerto Rican. I am always looking for different stuff to make for him from his culture because I always like to have a hot meal on the table when he gets home. So far I've learned to make a lot of Puerto Rican food but i have never tried the sancocho before so i am definitely going to try this recipe.. Thanks
Hi! First of all, I love your food channel! I made your sancocho and sofrito this past weekend and it was fantastic! Probably the best soup I've ever made and eaten in my life! Also, my friends came over & ate several bowls and was mad when it was gone! I garnished it with cilantro & an avocado slice. I live in a part of Chicago where authentic Puerto Rican food is hard to find and your channel is a lifesaver for me when I crave Puerto Rican food. Thank you and I look forward to your next video release!
I'm from Chicago and I can put you on to ALL the spots, for when it's too hot to cook, lol. Also, all the really good grocery stores to get authentic ingredients. I live on the south side so I understand the difficulty of locating some of the ingredients/restaurants. Which is weird to me, because many of us Ricans are definitely out here out south, lol.
Love your recipe!! I use smoked pork neck bones or cut up whole ham. I also add chopped chayote and cabbage (adds a little bit of sweetness) and chicken broth instead of water. Now I'm starving!! Love, love Puerto Rican food! And yes, must wash the rice, hahaha. You are definitely Puerto Rican, always apologizing for your mess, even though there is no mess. lol....
OMG the last time I had Sancocho I was about 12 years old I was the only Mexicana in a Puerto Rican neighborhood I loved it the smell will never leave my mind it was so good my friends mom would make it every time there was a fiesta pots and pots of food I went for the Sancocho well thank you for sharing I will try to make it for my Cuban husband again thanks for sharing God Bless
I love this video! Breaks sancocho down and makes it looks so easy. And I love the idea of smoked meat in it. I haven't had that before but will definitely have to try it!!
U know what because isn't the original recipe of sancocho de PR. He's using smoke meat WTF My grandma never uses those kind of meat just pork cow chicken ribs i know u can put any kind of meat whatever u like to put. Anyhow is so tasty mmm.
The Freakin Rican Restaurant I'm doing well, and looking forward to trying this recipe. Question, should the root veggies go in before the potatoes? I'm thinking that the potatoes would get too soft.
How are you . Yes put the potatoes in after like 20 mins. or you could put them in at the same time. just chop them bigger. okkie dookie good luck. Let me know
My boyfriend and his family are from Puerto Rico so I get to try all of the Puerto Rican goodies. His mom made sancocho a long time ago and it was the best thing I have ever tasted (besides mofongo) so thank you for the recipe! I can't wait to try it out!
I’m making this for my husband who’s birthday is on Valentines Day and will be surprised that I finally learned how to make sancocho for my sons that learned how to cook Spanish food now that their older... I will definitely tell them to watch your channel instead of asking me how to cook certain Puerto Rican food...One of them finally learned how to make sofrito 🙄 and I also learned from you how to make the papa rellena and alcapurrias which my husband loves. You’re a blessing and I love your videos 😍

We are all getting over the flu in my house and no one felt like eating... until now! I am in Australia but can still get the ingredients so I'm making it in the morning. Thank you so much! Love your vids. :)
My husband is Mexican and he cooks amazing! I'm Puerto Rican and I want to amaze him! Thanks for this channel from Camuy but living in Indiana not too much puertoricans or restaurants
I just made this sancocho today and loved it... The only thing I changed was that I used smoked pork neck bones and smoked pork chops instead of smoked turkey wings... Thanks for the great recipes... I love watching you videos...
All these dumb thumbs down why? Because he has HIS traditional recipes! So silly! I’m pretty sure you thumbs down this without even trying it. 😂 GROW UP ppl!
I am so glad I found your RUclips channel. My grandmother who raised me is from Yauco Puerto Rico, she did all the cooking in our home, so I grew up the authentic Puerto Rican food. I was born and raised in New York and of course I have Puerto Rican blood. So that makes me a New Yorrican! lol I am married to a gringo from TN. I cook some PR food and some american food. I have also learned to combine cultures and create an american dish with a twist of PR and I call it New Yorrican cooking!!! Any way I want to thank you because there are some PR dishes I have forgotten the recipe. I watched several videos before I decided to subscribe because I was looking for the authentic cooking. I have seen other videos from other people and I decided you are the closest and dead on with your recipes that remind me of my grandmothers cooking. Thank you!!! May God continue to bless you and your channel. Que Dios te bendiga!!!
Yummy I'm definitely trying this great recipe this weekend I know alot of people don't eat soup in the summer time but true Puerto Ricans can eat a mean ass Sancocho any time day or night winter or summer lol thanks for this recipe❤❤
I got I just made this!!! And omg!!!!! Is all I have to say!!!!! Thank you! And I also ordered your sofrito, adobo, and Sazon package!! It was great!!!!
omg. I just made this, it is slamming. I added extra garlic and sofrito since I don't use salt. I also added some stew beef chunks. My son loved it. I'm going to try bacailitos next
I'm a Gringo married to a lovely Puertorriqueña..her mom and her Abuela both made this for me..I love to cook, everyones recipe is different, they put a piece of beef stew meat in theirs, and also threw in some platano.Your recipe with the smoked turkey bears trying out.will report back after I make it. enjoyed your vid.you are one laid back Borinquén.
I love your videos! They're so folksy.I make Puerto Rican dishes because I love the cuisine(but in moderation; gotta keep my girlish figure!)I'm a gourmet home chef and I assure you if we were neighbors,we'd both have to join a gym lol. I too make sancocho but to mine I add 1-2 pigs feet cooked separately with a little of the liquid added to the already cooking sancocho and add cut up tripe cooked and drained. Never cooked using smoked turkey to the mix will do that next time I make some!!! Thanks
Really , really enjoy ALL your teaching tapes on how to cook authentic delicious Puerto Rican food!Yumm! Thank you thank you thank you! As I can I will order things you make for sell! I hope you get rich, teaching us to cook!
I'm American and I came across you page by way of a latino elderly woman dancing while making the soup, thanks for the recipe and I love your cleanliness although you know you should wash the rice
You have the BEST recipe hands down! Not even "auntie" Ida beats you with this recipe, thank you 🙏 I come back time and time again for your recipes.♡ I've had no one to teach me how to cook our food, I am very grateful for your channel❤🙌

I want to get use to making puerto rican food. In my journey as a prep cook then becoming a Chef I have learned different styles of cooking but Puerto Rican Quisine here I come.
OMG, I haven't had sancocho in ages!! I don't eat meat anymore but I can eat all the rest. Its extremely difficult to find the Puerto Rican veggies in SoCal. One of the things I miss about living in NYC.
Delicious. I tried this one but I added carne de res y oxtails instead and it was delicious. Today im making it with smoked pork. Anyways keep up the good work.
@@Thefreakinricanrestaurant lol 3 years later and here I am I started making it again this early morning. It was amazing with the smoked pork last time and I'm doing it again .
+jennefer perez Thank you , once you make this you are going to love it. It has so much flavor and it really is very healthy. Let me know when you make it. I love you for watching!
I just made this recipe today January 11, 2025. It came out absolutely delicious!!! Very flavorful, smells delicious, and very filling! I forgot the potatoes but it still came out excellent. Instead of rice because i'm not a big rice fan, I had hero bread with cheese on it as a side to dip in the stew. I also used smoked necked bones instead of the smoked turkey wings. Either way it came out excellent, thanks so much for sharing!!!!💯💯💯
Right now, I am making arroz con gandules and wanted to know what other PR dishes would be good to try. This is a nice fall & winter meal that will make for a great change up from chili. Plus it is super easy to prepare. TY
In so happy to have found you! I've subscribed and can't wait to check out your other videos. My mother passed away and I never wrote down her recipes except for how to make rice in many different ways. I can't wait to try your sancocho recipe! Thank you for sharing.
Love your channel!!!!! Yes, you can benefit from a large and deeper pot. Also, in the supermarket here in NJ, the sell a smoky liquid called, " LEÑA DE FUEGO" i love using it in my sancochos to give it even more of a smoky flavor as if the sancocho has been cooking on a fire pit all day♡♡♡ I use beef in mine♡♡♡ Big FAN!!!!!!!!!
looks delicious.. I moved away from home and my abuela use to make this for me.. with the white rice and avocado 😍😍😍 definitely will try this recipe! Thank you for sharing!

Yes dad can cook!!! Dad is learning!!
Yeah my grandma uses the same omg guineo verde platano patitas de cerdo y recao y las famosas bollitas las usaba para los gandules guidados tambien.
My mom made hers similar with the green bananas.

i looooove tripe in my sancocho!
Wanted to let you know that when you’re boiling food or water you can put a wooden spoon across the pan and it stops it from boiling out. 😎
Darcy Hawkins you can also put a stone (round smooth rock) in the middle of the pot before boiling.
Great tips!!
Wow thanks!

My father used to say that a Puertorican man who can't cook is not worth anything. He was a great cook.
So true I hate cooking now because it's me everyday forever

Dude my roommate is Puerto Rican and am from Guatemala I seen your channel and subscribed now am killing it on the kitchen so she told me thank you
I am so glad I found your RUclips channel.

You good sir taught me how to make perfect rice I’ve struggled with it my whole life. But learned it finally thanks to you
Se ve delicioso 😋 gracias por compartir tus recetas 😘👍🇵🇷
wepaaaa si es goya tiene wue ser bueno bori.. me facina el sancocho y mas cuando llueve... bendiciones para tu canal manito...
Thanks

Boxtime 848 My son’s first wife is Chinese. They had a girl and we call her our China Rican. She is gorgeous. Greatest thing he ever cooked 😂.

OMG, I haven't had sancocho in ages!! I don't eat meat anymore but I can eat all the rest. Its extremely difficult to find the Puerto Rican veggies in SoCal. One of the things I miss about living in NYC.

Either way it came out excellent, thanks so much for sharing!!!!💯💯💯
i fell in love ! where have u been with all these yummy recipes
Right now, I am making arroz con gandules and wanted to know what other PR dishes would be good to try. This is a nice fall & winter meal that will make for a great change up from chili. Plus it is super easy to prepare. TY

Love your channel!!!!!
Yes, you can benefit from a large and deeper pot. Also, in the supermarket here in NJ, the sell a smoky liquid called, " LEÑA DE FUEGO" i love using it in my sancochos to give it even more of a smoky flavor as if the sancocho has been cooking on a fire pit all day♡♡♡
I use beef in mine♡♡♡
Big FAN!!!!!!!!!
This looks amazing I'm definitely going to cook this when I can get to the store
Did you get a chance to make it?
