I love the fact that Putin himself has made the best argument as to why Ukraine should definitely join NATO.
Because if Ukraine had been a member of NATO, none of this would be happening, and we wouldn't be having this conversation. And all of the people who have perished so far on both sides, would still be alive. Because Putin would never invade a NATO country. He knows better..

Over the centuries the misconception of Russia has been fueled by certain special interests who hate Russia, its civilization, culture and its spiritual life. Russia, according to these interests, is a land of slaves who admire cruelty and raw power. This phobia of all things Russian can be traced to members of the so-called "illuminated " philosophical societies; secret Masonic lodges and financiers who undermined France and brought about the Reign of Terror in the 1790s.
The concept of the Russian soul, so often derided and misunderstood by the Western media, is in fact real and a great uniting bond among all Russian people.
Socialism in Russia was imported from the West and imposed by force and violence at the cost of millions of lives, as it was so alien and incomprehensible to the Russian people.
Russian resistance to bow to alien ideologies enraged all the proponents of socialism and liberal democracy. If not gracefully accepted by natives, it must be imposed by force regardless of the cost in human lives and national destruction.
Erroneous views of a "dark and obscurantist Russia " made it a justification to impose a "liberating socialism" on Russia.
The academic, mass media and show-business controllers of the West always have been in sympathy with Bolshevik and Marxist enforcers who took over Russia in 1917. The people of the world have only one choice: to accept "modern democracy" as defined by media-academic-liberal establishment. If they choose anything else they are immediately demonized and subject to the most violent punishment and enforcement. Russians must forever be prohibited from finding their own way of life and development and retain the culture and history that bound them together.
The forces that unleashed communism in Russia from the Western civilization at the turn of the previous century are very much in power today and efforts to subjugate Russia have never been stronger. Russia and Russian people are a friendly universe who should never be conquered by alien systems and ideologies aiming to destroy its history, culture and very nationhood. Was the Soviet Union not created in New York city and london and Berlin by bankers please? Those who created the Soviet Union are the same people who created the State of Israel..

It's just sad that the democratization post USSR went bad. Russia could be a prosperous country keeping all the good sides about Russian culture. It's a textbook example of the dangers of tyranny. Neighboring countries and normal Russians pay the price. The only winner is China, which now has Russia in its leach and can buy resources at a discount. However if a worldwide recession is the result then China will lose, too.

There is little intrinsically wrong with communism in Russia. Where it really goes tits-up is when one megalomanic tyrant takes total power to the extent that there is no-one is ready to discuss alternative approaches in fear of their life. Stalin was one prime example, and Putin is another. He appears to have no moral compass when it comes to exacting extreme outcomes on any who are bold enough to defy him. The murders and attempted murders he has carried out already in the UK show this, and the tory government of the time acquiesced by not making a sufficiently forceful response to the Russian government at the time. We should have turned the sanction on then instead of appearing to the whole world weak and welcoming.

China may have access to cheap resources, but that will be a very short-lived advantage.
I am more optimistic than Khodorkovsky. I don't believe Putin reaches the next winter in power. Ukraine, while suffering enormously from the indiscriminate bombing, is on the verge of taking the initiative. Putin will have no way around of doing something spectacular, to convince his supporters to keep him in power, after his army is driven out of Ukraine. Attacking Georgia or any other Asian state will just add to his problems - after all, he incessantly repeated, during the last two weeks, that it's NATO and the West that's out to get Russia, not any central Asian country, so going after some weak country, after being punched in the face by Ukraine, and _not_ going after Russia's number one enemy, which is responsible for the hardship that regular Russians must suffer, will be seen as weakness. You don't stay in power in Russia if you show weakness. So he'll either do nothing but lick his wounds and wait for an opportunity to attack a NATO country, or attack a NATO country straight away - his only available non-NATO target, in the West, is Moldova, but Moldova is insulated from Russia by Ukraine. In the first case, Russians will get him. In the second, NATO will gut him (and no, it's not a misspelling).
Once Putin is no longer in power, whoever comes after him, will bend over backwards to repair relations with the West - if the West keeps the sanctions in place, the next Russian dictator won't even have time to consolidate his power before Russians topple him too, because of the hunger. In order to repair relations with the West, Russia has to offer something. Guess what will the Americans demand, besides reparations for Ukraine?
Typically, at least the first few years after a war are of economic boom - recession comes somewhat later, if at all. Since the war in Ukraine is contained, and doesn't spread (for now, at least) to a wider area, chances are it won't cause a recession. China will still loose, because either way things go (i.e. regardless if Russians gut Putin or NATO guts Putin) Russia will come under EU and US economic and politic dominance.

Why are we so afraid how Putin understands something we eventually do, how he interprets our steps so that we don't accidentally offend him? To the hell with Putin's opinions. Kremlin has only one policy. To LIE. Kremlin power comes from lying. Lying big, and getting the whole damn world to play along with them. Once they got everybody agreeing with what they know in their hearts ain't true, they've got us by the neck.
Putin is liar and faker, who rules trough fear. Atomics? Mutual assured destruction (MAD) is a doctrine of military strategy and national security policy in which a full-scale use of nuclear weapons by two or more opposing sides would cause the complete annihilation of both the attacker and the defender. Putin can not launch them by himself, he needs both Shoygu and Gerasimov to do so and they are not mad.
Unless Russia is defeated in Ukraine NOW, before Kyiv, Kharkov, Odessaand other cities are razed to the ground by thermobaric weapons, if the west will not confront Putler now, then soon enough will world watch how Putin invades Moldova, Georgia and finally, small Baltic states - the NATO members. And then NATO will again do nothing serious for the same fear of russian nuclear weapons. Risk WW3 for such a little state? Pff. Maybe it is only civil war, better not meddle in it. That day will be the end of NATO as failed phony alliance. To break NATO and west by lies is long term target of Kremlin.
If ordinary russian to this day DON'T even KNOW that there is war in Ukraine, then Putin will not stop. You think that after Putin prevails in Ukraine he will crawl back to his bankrupt Mordor and behave, suddenly being a good boy? Wake up everybody. Fuel, long range sams, ciws, iron dome, bring in anything, airdrop food and supplies. World is at war, stop Putin NOW, or else it will be only worse and more tragic. Russian federation MUST IMMEDIATELY feel the consequences of their barbaric war, that is the only way.
It is dire need of actual power projection in Ukraine. For God sake give them at least fuel, long range sams, ciws, iron dome, bring in anything, airdrop food and supplies. Make some air bridge like in cold war Berlin.
In these very moments there are children in Mariupol who dies from dehydration, there is NO water now, no supplies. Russians not let anyone in or out. All ways from the city are mined and shelled. Hospitals in numerous cities are now deliberately shelled and bombed. It is russian pattern. Encircle the city and shell it with Grad and Smerch rocket artilery, conventional artilery, airstrikes... salvo after salvo. You saw it in Grozny, you saw it in Syria, now you can see this in Mariupol and Khariv. Purpose is one and only - to inflict TERROR, to break morale, by ruthless killing of women and children alike. The most barbaric way to wage a war. It is genocide. Another of long line of war crimes made by Putin. Recent reckless attacks on nuclear energy power plants and blatant cynical violations of the Geneva Conventions show us clearly, that Putin's Russia is terrorist state, unpredictable, lying, deceptive and dangerous to humankind. It is war against western world.
How long will be just keep watching. Must Chornobyl, where russians now cut of power for cooling, again leak radiation. Must the biggest european nuclear power plant Zaporizhzhia became another Chornobyl dissaster? Must we see radioactive cloud overe Europe again, and only then we maybe seriously assist Ukraine or what? Do you know that russians there allowed only skeleton crew to hold them as hostages and that russians rigged this facality with explosives? This is nuclear terrorism. Pure and simple.
Putin is and always has been killer (rememeber Litvinenko, Politkovskaya, Nemcov and many others), and now we already know his recent stunt - he send "Wagner group" neo-nazi murderers and assassins to Kyiv to kill Zelenskyy, his cabinet members, and even their families. I reckon he is trully mentally ill.
After all "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely" as Lord Acton said already in 19th century. Quite accurate description of tsar Putin the Bloody .
"Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion. Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing. He is not a good man who, without a protest, allows wrong to be committed in his name, and with the means which he helps to supply, because he will not trouble himself to use his mind on the subject."
      - John Stuart Mill, 1867
"Appeasement policy, the policy of appeasing Hitler and Mussolini, operating jointly at that time, during 1937 and 1938 by continuous concessions granted in the hope of reaching a point of saturation when the dictators would be willing to accede to international collaboration. ... It came to an end when Hitler seized Czechoslovakia on March 15, 1939, in defiance of his promises given at Munich, and Prime Minister Chamberlain, who had championed appeasement before,
decided on a policy of resistance to further German aggression."
      - Walter Theimer (ed.), The Penguin Political Dictionary, 1939
Putin understands only power and determination. Everything else is sign of weakness for him. Do everything what is in your power to drive Putin's kleptocracy to the end. I wish there were influential politicians who could see things clearly. Those who would not be frightened, weak, shaky and corrupt through money from the oligarchs of East and West alike. Those who had the determination of real leaders capable of taking responsibility. Maybe they still exist somewhere and maybe their voice will get to the right ears before is too late, I still believe it, I have to. Talk to your representatives. God bless you.

I fully support the sanctioning of EVERY RUSSIAN OLIGARCH.
Every one of these people bears responsibility for EVERYTHING that occurs in Russia. If anything, every one of them should be forced to return to Russia and every single "investment" they own be garnisheed back to the country the investements exist in.
If however, these "OLIGARCH's" accept responsibility for Russia, specifically PUTIN, and offer ways to REMOVE HIM FROM POWER ....any ways ....AND ACT TO HAVE PUTIN REMOVED ....THEN...considerations to stop personal sanctions could be considered against those OLIGARCHs who embrace and take an active role in PUTIN's removal. Otherwise, EVERY RUSSIAN OLIGARCH SHOULD BE SANCTIONED PERMANENTLY.
Once PUTIN is removed, EVERY RUSSIAN MILITARY LEADER needs then to be tried in the World Court for supporting Putin and murdering innocent civilians.
If PUTIN was to be tried, the verdict should take him to a public, televised firing squad with 21 rifles ...each loaded with one bullet. Then each of his military team should follow with the same details.
This entire process, trial to execution, should be completed within TWO MONTHS of PUTIN's removal.

As a result of corruption schemes, the assets of the company, which became known as Yukos, were stolen from the state. The value of assets on paper at the time of privatization was $ 300 million. Within a week, this asset was worth $ 6 billion, and in a few years $ 50 billion. Putin returned this asset to state ownership. He didn't take it for himself, not for friends. So the phrase "corrupt bankruptcy process" is not appropriate here.

@@louiss.7765 what? Either you failed to communicate your message or you don’t make any sense.
If Putin complexly attacked Ukraine would that be better?
      What is a simple attack?
I’d say there’s a lot of complexity that the public knows nothing about when it comes any military action, especially one on the scale we see. Few things are as simple as the seem.
Furthermore, history goes back a long time and many important factors become lost to time.
Most importantly in this situation, everyone has an opinion, many people even have convictions that may or may not be based in truth or fact.
Most of us with opinions have no connection to any of this… most of us are thousands of miles away from this, most of us know nothing about what is really happening elsewhere.
I highly doubt the US public is very informed about current foreign affairs aside from the skewed view we get from the media.
It’s easy to claim that it’s simple, and see it as good guy vs bad guy, and it could in fact be that simple, but in reality nothing is that simple.
Good vs bad is an easy story to tell, it does make things much more simple than real life. A bad guy vs bad guy is much harder to tell, and much harder for others to follow along with, and it makes it very hard to know who to root for… there’s also a good chance that one bad guy defeats the other… then you’re left with a very complicated situation!
I’m not saying one side here is bad, but I am saying that both sides are human!
No human is pure and good, that’s a fantasy!
I doubt that any human is pure evil, but I can’t be sure…
No matter what, in this situation, there’s no winners, only losers!
Russia can’t win, even if they achieve 100% success the long term cost will be high!
Ukraine has already lost, even if they repel Russia and suffer no more loses, they’ve already paid a grave price but beyond the immediate, there’s not a way to remove the literal tons of weapons that have flooded into their county. Long after this situation has been resolved there will be copious amounts of undocumented weapons floating around the region, we have ample proof that will be a problem for many years of even decades.
But hey, if you think it’s as simple as Putin bad then I guess that makes it a lot easier to get through the day, then by all means live in your fantasy

a lot of American billionaires started from the bottom. very few made it to the top without shady dealings as the climb to the top is easier when you use people's throats as a ladder.

@@jandarmofeurope2676 It used to be. Then during the Soviet era, when normal Russian civilians were effectively sealed off from the rest of Europe, entire generations were born indoctrinated into the Soviet system with no real understanding of 'European culture' beyond that which the Kremlin permitted. Then the Soviet era ended and Russians realised how different they were when the West opened up. Now they are being ostracised again - only this time there is a generation of Russians who know what they are losing. You don't need to look far to see the reports of the Russian brain-drain as the nation's brightest and most creative minds try any means to leave a sinking ship.

There is a shared history of "exchange" of culture, like music, art and literature, but that's about it, little more. There are more cultural similarities with North Africa and the Middle East than with Russia (alphabet, numerical system, etc.).
Any territorial similarity is, and always has been, through belligerence, little more. Try telling a Pole or a Hungarian that they are culturally similar to a Russian and their reaction will be far more distasteful than your own, demonstrably ignorant, comment.

Whilst I agree there are other rich people in power who the word could apply to, in the USA they are often companies/lobbies more than individuals. The fall of the Soviet Union created a situation where a lot of oligarchs (as in one businessperson, whose wealth grants them great influence - at least over the "common" people) were able to rise to power in a way that isn't so common in the rest of the world - a lot of wealth in Europe is generational, a lot of wealth in the Middle East is a mix of nobility/warlord/oil money and of all of those are territorial wealth... The oligarch is not a uniquely Russian phenomenon, but it is a specific kind of wealth and influence that there was more space for, in the collapse of the USSR. I'm unfamiliar with East Asian wealth patterns, so I can't speak to how those are addressed in the news, but I'm assuming you're referring mainly to the disparity between how Russia and the USA are addressed in media.
