What’s In My Toolbox?! Confessions Of A Tool Snob

  • Matco, and Snap-on, and Mac, oh my! Today on Dead Dodge Garage, it’s the answer to a viewer question that I am way too excited to give: what’s in my toolbox? The real answer is years of financial mistakes. The good news is, at this point in my life I have way more than I really need as an advanced hobbyist, and I’m… almost done paying for it.
    No personal bribes were taken during the making of this video, and since I paid (at least) full price for all of this stuff, I will happily tell you exactly what I think of it.
    Do you read the video descriptions? I don’t think anyone reads the video descriptions. Why do I spend so much time on them? If you actually read this, drop a bad dad joke in the comments.

    I started with Mac when I was in college. He was the only one to work with us. He didn't care how much we spent he would deal with us all. I also bought my generic tools (sockets, wrenches, etc) from Craftsman.
    Lately I've been going to matco for my specialty tools. He's been consistent in doing doesn't grumble if I go a week or two with out buying.
    I also have gone to gear wrench.

    I started off with Craftsman and still have a lot of it - I inherited even more from my Dad. Doesn’t everybody need six sets of raised panel SAE wrenches and eight sets of metric wrenches?? I have other wrenches (Gearwrench,etc) but after so many years, Craftsman old school is what I always reach for :)
    I have had really great luck with Sunex and Capri impact sockets for the money and went a little overboard. Deep, mid, mid 12 point, shallow, and Astro Nano extra shallow in 3/8, deep and shallow in 1/2 (10-36mm Sunex), deep and shallow in 1/4, Westling socket racks for all of it. Love Capri and Tekton chrome sockets for the money, but I just started buying Snap-on ratchets and you’re right, they are the best. Also exploring Nepros and Koken. Screwdrivers are Craftsman, Snap-on, Vessel, and Nepros. Tool Vault toolbox with side lockers, best toolboxes for the money IMO.
    Your Matco box is sweet! Love the matching cart.

      I do really like the good ol’ Craftsman stuff. All of my pre-shop tools were Craftsman (except randoms and a small set of Gear Wrenches.) I at least need 3-4 sets of wrenches… lol.
      Interesting, I haven’t heard of several of those brands. Have heard of Sunex and Tekton but haven’t had any of their stuff. Maybe a couple Tekton specialty tools. I just love the Snap On ratchets and sockets. They’re stupidly expensive, but not much more expensive than the other (also stupidly expensive) tool trucks, and they’re really good tools. Lifetime tools, I hope…

    I'm just a tinkerer from up here in the great white North however my old man was a mechanic and Snap on was his tool of choice if he could afford it. He did learn though that a tool box is a toolbox and that the most expensive one rarely held your tools better than the old beaten one eventually he built a mobile 6ft long bench with drawers and just a top cabinet to store his tools of choice and just wheeled it bay to bay to complete whatever job he was doing that day. I myself have all his old Snap on, Gray, and the odd Craftsman tools. Plus a ludicrous assortment of oddball screwdrivers pretty sure I dont have two that are the same brand. Nice video it sure is easy to spend thousands of $$$ on stuff that you use once and then sits in a drawer aint it

I'm an idiot who's all about brand loyalty so my whole box is all Cornwelled out. Recently though I've been falling in love with Matco for some reason... I have a couple Cornwell ratchets, a handful of socket sets, and a bunch of random things. I would skip Matco ratchets and go straight for Snapon. My flex head Snapon cost less than the equivalent Matco (although it was on a deal at the time) and seriously, the difference is huge. The action is so much better. And then you’ll definitely be ruined! And you’ll need more. Haha.

And I have a truck box or it will be anyway of the h194 mts husky brand mechanic tool set that is what I have been using until I bought the two great deals on the great wrench socket set of the 1/4, and the 3/8 and then the 84t stubby 3/8 and long flex head gear wrench ratchets that was a restock,over order clerical error napa $48 purchase $12 shipping but I am happy with them til i build me a 1/4 snap on 72 series ratchet with the 3/8 anvil in the 1/4 inch body, another very handy tool when working on mopar vehicles,gm gbody cars, square body trucks that's usually easy except for when headers and ac is involved and the gm s and t series first gen s10 trucks and the gm first, second,third and fourth generation gm body vehicles....

    Back in the day Craftsman use to be my go-to tools because of Sears & their warranty. Nowadays it can be anything from Autozone, Harbor Freight, Gearwrench, Husky, Lowe's Craftman tools, Amazon high rated tools, Astro tools, etc. It all depends. Wrenches & sockets are more or less similar as are a lot of other tools. Specialty tools are in their own class, but since a lot of tools are now made in China I'm guessing the same tools are often just rebranded. It's not so much the tool as it is the person using them!!!

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  Год назад

      Oh I agree. I used nothing but Craftsman when I started. They’re totally fine. I just like the Snapon and Mac tools much more. Yes, most of the specialty tools are all made by the same company (*cough* Lisle) and rebranded by everyone who sells them. All of these cheaper brands sell tools that work just fine. There are plenty of mechanics who rely on them and don’t have any problems. I could have been one, but I fell in love with the nice tools. There really is a difference. Or I’ve just been drinking too much Kool Aid. 🤣

    For my general maintenance, my 40 year old SK 3/8 drive socket set still works great. It's got standard and deep sockets. I'd be lost without it.
    1/2" craftsman is for larger stuff.
    I spend $3 at a Habitat ReStore for a "war era" 1/2" ratchet....I think 50 clicks.
    No dents in the knurling, like it wasn't used much. I discovered its age using Google. This wrench isn't finished off perfectly smooth. It's also not chromed. Through Google, I discovered that during the "war years" these wrenches were not chromed, but cadmium played.
    I saw 5 on Ebay averaging $124.99. I done good. 😁
    I cleaned and re-greased it and it's my favorite because of its history.
    I've rebuilt two engines, but I'm not a day in, day out mechanic

      @@DeadDodgeGarage you are simply feeding people information. When working with high quality tools you feel better about what you're doing. I think if you feel better, you work better.
      That said you pointed out that you don't need to own every high-end tool known to man. I'd say if you're going to buy something of quality then sockets and a torque wrench would probably be a good place. I've watched a lot of tool testing on Project Farm and the results are often surprising. Often, some of the cheap stuff outperforms the high-end stuff.
      If I was working in a high-end repair shop, what would my fellow workers say if my snap-on roll around toolbox was full of Husky tools? Pride can be very expensive 😁

    I know abt spending serious money on tools. I have Snap-on tools. Got everything paid off and then retired. A good mechanic is hard to find and nobody wants to pay him what he’s worth. I don’t miss it a bit. Service writers screwing you over and telling you that they will “make it up to you on the next one”. Sure they will. Service managers that have their favorite hiney kissers that they feed the gravy work too. Think twice before becoming a mechanic. No “real” money in it.

      No way I could’ve done in it the dealership world. Glad to have gone about it my own way - even though I made essentially zero money for quite a while, it set me up to be where I am now.

      Dude that’s the smart way to go. Investing a ton of money into tools and a huge ridiculous box was not my best life decision. It’s super nice and I love it, but I could’ve done a lot more with the money - like save my business… or save for retirement.

      @@billbeckett1021 I'm still very much in the trade, but my operation has changed a lot - for the better. I now work for a Mopar restoration shop a few days a week, and when I'm not doing that I'm maintaining my local fleet of mail delivery trucks on contract with USPS here in my home shop, and taking other car jobs here and there. I'm glad to have the weight and overhead of the repair shop off of my shoulders, while still retaining all of the tools and equipment I need to do the job. Obviously without the shop here at my house, things would be a lot more difficult.

      Yeah, that’s it… I’m lazy 🤣 ok big guy. Let’s see you run a business as service writer, accountant, receptionist, facilities maintenance, and oh yeah… also fix cars. I’m sure you’ll do great! You might even have the best reputation and highest rating of all local shops like I did! Then after that let’s see you work a normal day job, maintain a fleet of mail trucks on the weekends, and run a shop at home doing normal repairs and projects in your “spare time.” Oh, don’t forget running a RUclips channel on top of all of that. Filming, editing, coming up with ideas, releasing videos and responding to idiots on the internet all by yourself. Don’t forget family time and keeping your house in one piece either. I’m sure you’ll keep everything spotless!

    Matco is junk, plain and simple

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  Год назад +1

      I will stop short of saying that, but only because I have invested so many thousands in Matco. And despite the couple issues I have with the toolbox, I really think it’s great. My main grievance is that the power features weren’t well thought out. The front power plugs are recessed on a Mac box… just saying.

    Bro, you are so ridiculously funny. I can not stop laughing, I really enjoyed your video but do you really not like the cornwell tool boxes? I think their platinum series boxes are great quality

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  Год назад

      I can’t say what series I’ve put hands on, but they’re just so cheap feeling in comparison. They have some unique features - I mean a keypad or a keyless entry remote? Fancy. I don’t like the pulls, and I really just don’t like how they look. They are obviously much cheaper than the other tool truck boxes though. Cornwell stuff in general I’m just not a fan of. I like my Cornwell guy though, and I am buying stuff mostly from him lately - Milwaukee stuff, for one thing, and a welder, which I’m very happy with.
      Thanks for watching!
