As a Belgian l totally envy Australia's sports culture and how they make a feast of every Olympics. I wish you could host the Games every 12 or 16 years. (New Zealand, you're cool too)
Am from Manchester we never stood a chance complete of time really not a big enough City to host the Olympics well done Sydney the right decision was made
No one expected that the Asian Financial Crisis would break out then, and the infrastructure in Beijing was not so perfect in 2000... From the contemporary perspective, 2008 was the perfect point for an Olympic game in China - and most people think holding one game is enough.

Been looking for this for 18 years.. thank you!
Found it on an old VHS.
Its exactly 25 years to this day. Sydneysiders were cheered about the Olympics.
Amazing piece of history for Sydney. I just think the Olympics has lost relevance nowadays though

Who’s here after Brisbane Won the 2032 games?
Oh hello there!
brisvegas won nothing - they were awarded because no one else wanted them. They will cost us billions and for what?
Thanks for uploading this! I can see it came up a few weeks ago.
Heard people singing the National Anthem.
So proud.
I was there in 1993. Not in Sydney. I was there in Monte Carlo.
Greg Eccleston wow I am a Sydneysider I knew Ian Thorpe at the time of the games it was a magical time in our city
And a special time in my life
Where you part of the aoc delegate?

Woo! What a great moment!
This was on Both BBC and ITV (in the NW as a specially extended edition of Granada Tonight)
Because of the Manchester 2000 bid that launched a year prior

Beijing, Manchester, Berlin, Istanbul, and also Brasilia were also bidders, but Brasilia withdrew at the last minute.

yes not a chance at all
Sandy Roberts and Jennifer Keyte - wow! I do remember watching that crucial "The winner is Sydney" moment.
Jennifer Keyte appeared on channel 9 in the late 1990s
@@MisterPolitical1 Thanks for that memory and reminder. We all associate her with Seven - at least of a certain age.

Wow. Hong Kong was set for handover to China in 1997, and a Hong Kong billionaire wanted to donate Beijing's 100,000 seater main stadium.

Brisbane confirmed as the preferred 2032 host by the IOC
And the Monagesque move me hard especially the lozenges and the corporate boxes.
Ten's coverage was better because it was more localized and their coverage of the actual announcement was much better with more emotion.
I don't know if I particularly remember Ten's coverage of the Olympic bid...
@@adelaidedupont9017 And Seven was going to be the host country’s broadcaster for those games anyway.
Better than 7, abc (2) & 9
Channel 7 was more on monaco
Beijing was expected by most to win the bid. Quite the surprise when Sydney took it.
Beijing was bad because of human rights violations
Where was everyone in the Istanbul crowd? Sure it was the first of successive bids (sans 2016), but you'd think there still be some enthusiasm.
And then you remember "the youngest population in Europe", David.

As an Aussie I obviously would want it any other way, but how special would’ve an Olympics in Berlin have been, within a decade of reunification?
Beijing 2000 is the winner defeating Sydney 2000 for the Games of the XXVII Olympiad aka the Games of the New Millennium.
