    I’m in zone 9 b. Phoenix Arizona, I bought a blue ice 11/2 years ago. I bought it a bit smaller than the one on this video. It’s now pushing about 51/2 ft. Tall 4 ft. Side. Such a beautiful tree. It doesn’t change color ever. Blue all year. I have many unique tropical flower trees and fruit trees, blue ice is still my favorite tree I have.

    Some great information & I agree with all that is stated in this video, with one important exception. I have two beautiful & large Arizona Cypress, that are each approximately 25 ft. tall. I live in Southeast Arizona in a rural area, which is inhabited by deer. Contrary to what the Host stated in the video, that deer will stay clear of Arizona Cypress is not correct. I was forced to protect my beautiful cypress tree's with 6' tall fencing, because the deer were stripping off the foliage to bare twigs, as high as they could reach. This was also the case with an Italian Cypress tree, that the deer were devouring, during their frequent visits to my property. So I can attest to this fact, from personal & long term experience.

    The fragrance is astounding--a little hard to describe. It smells like the desert, and perfume. It smells like a tree that doesn't take crap from anyone. I think it's wonderfully unique and pleasant, but some might call it--interesting?

    I have had mine for 12-13 years in zone 8 central Texas. It is 40ft tall / 15ft wide. Beautiful. It is my only conifer that has not had bag worm issues (knock on wood). People have knocked on my door to ask me what kind of tree it is. I love the clean fresh pine smell after it rains.

    Firstly, a fantastic video. Easy to understand, and you don't go ON AND ON AND ON like some videos. What I would like to know is how to cultivate more plants from the one plant I have. I see it has like little nuts on it - are they the seeds? Can I grow additional plants from these and if so, how?
    Thanks again, really enjoyed the video.

    Bought one in March 2022 here in Birmingham, Alabama. It's now June 2022 and it's getting established. Found them being sold at our local Lowe's, and they are still offering them. It's at least a North American native tree species, and I'm hopeful it will also be used as a larval food plant for some of our native butterfly species, such as Juniper Hairstreak, as well as a nesting site for Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. I'm using it as a specimen tree. I hope people don't use it in a hedgerow, which would not look very natural, and would also run the risk of eventually being pruned at the top, which would just be a maintenance nightmare over the longterm. I think it's best used as a specimen tree, and it's a real standout given the unusual silvery blue foliage color. Trouble-free, great in full sun location, and I anticipate enjoying its low-water usage in the years to come.

    I am a pro gardener. I call myself a master gardener however I cannot seem to grow these darn trees! The cultivar we have in NY is a little different.
    Humbling to say the least.
    Different environments, in ground or in planters etc. Pennsylvania to NYC locations.
    I have browning first then slowly degrading. Very little growth and root growth.
    I am currently fighting to save 2 12 ft. Topiary.
    It is on sunny rooftop in planters with drip irrigation.
    Perhaps the northeast environment is just not ideal.
    But if nurseries can do it I should be able to also.

    I put a row (9) of blue icy (10ft) trees in my backyard as a screener last spring. They initially were beautiful. I live in Nashville, Tn area. Around mid summer to fall last year they started turning brown and I was told they were just shedding (inside out). Throughout the winter and early spring they started to perk up and I thought they're not dieing after all and they'll live. Now a year later after last years shedding they have gaping holes throughout and really aren't providing much of a screen element. Now again they are starting to turn brown from the inside out as well as on the outer branch. Will these trees every fill in? Like Mary, how long does it take this tree to establish? They have grown at least 3 feet since last spring, but I'm really disappointed they haven't filled in are so shallow looking.

      Rather surprised a nursery would sell these in Tennessee as this tree thrives in a Mediterranean type climate and soil. Long hot dry summers and wet winters in extremely well drained soil. Summer rains on this tree would likely cause disease or rot.

    Well, I'm back a year later with the same 120+ Arizona Cypress trees but a different issue. Some of my trees, now in the ground for 20 months, are leaning. We had a very very wet year. More rain than Maryland has ever seen in a year. Anyway, I dug up the tree that was leaning the most. The roots were in knots wrapped around themselves instead of being spread out. I don't know what happened to cause this, but since the trees are about 4 feet high now and still easy to handle, I was wondering if I can dig up the leaning trees, unravel the roots and then replant? Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated!

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  5 лет назад

      We had the record rain here as well. I would definitely stake them as soon as possible. The other is up to you. You could kill a few for sure digging them up and doing root damage to them. I probably wouldn't at this point.

    • @davidherman1554
      @davidherman1554 5 лет назад

      @@JimPutnam I'll stake them as you suggest, much easier than digging. Perhaps they will stabilize themselves over the summer.

      @Isabel Livieva Thank you for posting this information. I learn so much from reading these comments! I just discovered this past week that I have clay soil in my front garden about 8 inches to a foot deep in a certain section of the garden. I was soo upset but it helps to explain why the plants that I planted last summer are not doing well despite diligent watering and a top layer of compost put down by previous homeowner. I will definitely mound up some new plants and amend the soil some more, and have everything sloping away from the foundation. ❤️

      Does not have full sun but I think enough-no choice on location because of size. I’ve been afraid to cut it at all. Spring is not too far away now here in Southeastern Virginia. I think I’ll give it a few warmer months to see if it gets any stouter on its own. If not, I guess I can top it a little in the Fall. Thanks.

    I just planted 120 of these in my yard last spring. They were doing very well but now, about 1 year later I am seeing a lot of the trees have brown coloration on the lower branches. Are these plants sick or is that just an effect of the winter here in Maryland?

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  6 лет назад

      I don't know how dry it was in your area in the fall, but it was extremely dry in mine. Conifers tend to thin at the bottom and interior when they are drought stressed.

      You may benefit from pulling a soil sample. Your local ag fertilizer company will be able to interpret the sample and make a fertilizer/soil amendment recommendation based on that. Your local university extension may be able to analyze samples for viruses if the virus in question is common and present in commonly grown agricultural crops in your area. Pest issues are also not out of the question and can be diagnosed with a bit of research and a 10-20 power hand lens. I'm still learning about these shrubs, but in my area (WA), some mite pests require higher powers to be seen in some crops.

    Jim, got a handful of these and they have done great through drought. Out lasted Leyland and Greengiants. Mine are about 5 ft off property line. Neighbor just put up chainlink fence so now I have trouble getting mower on back side. Also the fence is back off the line and I have mulched up to the line. So rather than have them go in and butcher anything hanging over, I want to go ahead and prune it myself so it will be done right. My question is how well do they do when you prune 2-3 year old growth? Will they fill back in or will I have a bald spot?
