when i try to select the image, it says layer empty, even though when i click on the layer the screenshot is there..

Hey Heidi! When you tap on a layer, you have to scroll up from the default blending mode (Normal) to find Multiply. The format of the blending mode selector changed with Procreate 5, however all the modes are still there - just takes some scrolling!
