Two times I had the pleasure to play with Rafael Méndez as a student in high school orchestra. As a trumpeter myself, I attended the clinics he held. In concert, I was mesmerized by his skill and virtuosity. I learned better the techniques of double-tonguing, triple-tonguing, and circular breathing. The singular song he played that impressed me more was "Flight of the Bumblebee."
Met this wonderful human being and maestro in 1967, Canada's Centennial year, when the orchestra from York Memorial Collegiate,Toronto, toured Mexico. A perfect gentleman that spared time for us young musicians. Such an influence that I carried on playing trumpet and conducting for 35 years.
Everyone trying for a dark sound today. Because to this day there has never been another who sound the way Raphael sounds if we could we would all sound just like Mendez.
olivier oliver sergei not. Impressive technique, less music. You forgot to mention Wynton Marsalis and of course Arturo Sandoval. I think he is the current number one, although he is not my favorite trumpet player
Julian: Don't like Arturo's sound and he tends to be a bit of a show off. Compare his La Virgen de la Macarena to Rafael's and tell me which one sounds better, cleaner. I prefer Doc Severinson for the kind of playing Arturo does. Doc is better IMO.
Others may have a wider, higher lower range, but that does not make them a "great trumpet player". The ability to use the range the trumpeter wishes is the key to a great. This man in my humble opinion is the greatest ever..
to David Meneses: I am playing a Raphael Mendez #2 trumpet mouthpiece. Is this, by any chance, the actual mouthpiece that Raphael played? If not, do you know exactly what he played? Thank you, John.
Rafiel, without adoubt, Is the greatest trumpet player evr. His sound and his atrticulation is the best that I have ever listened to. And I have listened to a great amount of Trumpet players. His double tongueing and triple tongueing goes without saying anything. I only wish that I could be half as good as he is. All I can add is fantastic,And Great,Great,Great
Our Band Dir. arranged for Mr Mendez to play a concert with us in 1956. I was a freshman in the band. He toured and Soloed with many school bands during that time. A Fantastic Musician. Will always remember him.
Browsing your computer while recording this? There are very obnoxious Windows clicking sounds throughout the album. Such as, at exactly 21:33 , 21:43 and 21:51 What the heck? lol
Who ever recorded this probably was. This is a direct vinyl rip you can tell by the sound of the dust hitting the needle while the vinyl is playing( sounds like a little pop).

First time I ever heard him, he became my hero. (50yrs ago)
I absolutely love Raphael's playing. John.
He is not playing notes, he is expressing his feelings through his trumpet. He plays from the heart and that is a wonderful gift from God.
That's what makes the difference between Rafael Mendez and guys like Nakariakov or Ruben Simeo.
Mendez had fabulous technique and he loved a bright sound. All his recordings have a touch of the mariachi sound !
So lucky to have seen him live on four occasions before I was 6 years old, two of those in concert with his twin sons! What control and feeling! :)
