    It just simply smashes the sound of a western guitar... when I hear this it just makes me feel I should put the guitar aside and catch hold of one of these beauties ! It sounds so powerful and deep ! Besides that you can't stop watching the screen because these masters are so playful humorous and geniuses !!! pure silence and they become just the music they play !... too graceful !!! Yes !!!

    The drum on the right is called a "Ghatam". It's primarily used in the South of India in the "Carnatic" music tradition. It is nothing more than a clay pot tapered to the opening with a slightly raised rim. The clay has metal filings and other secret ingredients mixed in to give it strength and extra resonance. Like tabla, there are "bols" that are learned to produce all the different sounds on it. Fun to play too ! ! !

    do sarod players always have to file there nails between sessions?

    • @harikansal
      @harikansal 7 лет назад +1

      its not their nails that they file, it's the calluses that build up on the tips of their fingers. the thickness of the callus changes the sense of touch, so when engaging in faster movements, they are trimmed down to enhance accuracy and sound.

    • @joshuarosen6242
      @joshuarosen6242 10 лет назад +2

      You should be more specific but the instruments are as follows.
      The guitar/banjo type instrument is called the sarod (sometimes spelt sarode in English). The pairs of drums are called tabla and are the most important accompanying instrument in both Hindustani (North India) and Carnatic (South India) classical music. Strictly speaking only the smaller of the two is actually a tabla but they are usually referred to as a pair. They are also played as a solo instrument occasionally, especially by the most respected players. The one that looks like an earthenware jug (which is exactly what it is) is a ghatam.

      Joshua Rosen thanks, guess i shouldve read the video description before asking... :/

    • @Trex0891
      @Trex0891 10 лет назад +2

      Joshua Rosen While most of your information is fairly accurate, Id have to correct you slightly on the bit about the the tabla featuring in Carnatic music. This is definitely not the case. Serious practitioners of Carnatic music have never included the tabla in their recitals as this position belongs almost exclusively to the mridangam followed by the ghatam. The mridangam is a whole different animal with its own repertoire/syllables/mathematics and other percussions which may feature along with it are the ghatam (which I mentioned), the thaavil and the moorsing. Secondly, all tabla players (respected or otherwise) perform as soloists. It is not an honour reserved for only the most established. This the way the instrument is taught, The skills for accompaniment with vocalists or instrumentalists are honed after the basic soloing skills are perfected. This is a flawed method but beyond the scope of this argument. So if you look around youtube, tabla solos of varying quality are performed by a wide gamut of performers and in some case lower ranked musicians often end up playing better stuff than their more established brethren!

    • @joshuarosen6242

      Thank you for that additional information. I am interested in Hindustani classical music but only have an amateur level of knowledge. I don't know anything like as much about Carnatic music so thank you for clarifying that.
