Please keep doing server related videos. There's not enough homelab content on RUclips and they've always been some of my favorite videos produced by LTT, Level1Techs, Craft Computing, etc, but not enough of it!
I definitely dig these kind of videos (I sub to Level1's channels). I appreciate being able to have a diverse opinion pool to draw from, so appreciate other creators who sprinkle more of the technical aspects in.
Love it Nick, I set up my own Unraid server from an old PC from my employer, yeah its only got 8 gig ram and a dual core but for a home server it works well, the steep learning part was trying to figure out how to set up Unraid and get it working, and also how to setup plex to run in it too.

I got an Epyc CPU + motherboard for similar reasons. Upgrading a couple old Xeon machines and migrating from truenas core to scale. Consolidating 2 systems to 1 having and 5 PCI-E 4.0 x16 and 128gb of memory in that one is going to be nice when it's finally all up and running.
What's the going price when using a setup you and Gear Seekers are using? I run numerical weather prediction models at home and this the Epyc might be something I should look into.
I'm EXTREMELY interested in server stuff. I'd love more of these videos and I'd especially love to see more about the software side of things, virtualization is underrated imho! With even consumer CPUs having lots of cores and motherboards supporting lots of RAM, virtualization is becoming a viable workflow for everyone, not just big servers
Great thing with virtually machines is the snapshot feature and easy o.s deployment. Alot can also be said for running things in it's own container and resource allocation to maximise the hardware.
I haven't had a fiddle with esxi since early 2000 when I was studying network security. Amusing that most of the teaching material then was all focused on running on a standalone dedicated server. Most people now days will tell you to use unraid or something similar but personally I'm big fan of esxi. The interface was extremely intuitive even when I was a noob with virtualiztion and just runs. Can totally see why you use it.

Just starting my Networking Journey and taking the Harvard cs50 via edX for free..... That ESX... looks like a good interface to start with.... Basic GUI, One Stop Shop.
Have you ever thought about using EPYC? Since you only need the lanes, the 16 cores EPYC plus the motherboard is relatively cheap, especially if you just sell that TR and mobo combo.
Do you have a breakdown of all of the components you’ve used here? I’m extremely new to servers, and I’ve been looking for a chassis that makes sense, but can’t find anything with 12 drives available for lower than $800. And it seems like you added the drive modules after? I’m not quite sure how I should be looking for the chassis and modules that would be cost effective and not break my wallet. Hot swap would be preferred, but I’ll settle for anything to help with figuring out how to get started.
I ran ESXi for a long time, however with the free version you can't make full vm backups with for instance Veeam. Also the PowerShell CLI functionality is super limited...

You said you've made an internal network for the VM's to communicate directly to eachother without going on the network. But doesn't VMware do this automatically? The virtual switch on the hypervisor should know the machine you're trying to reach is on the same host. Speed wise it shouldn't matter.
Just a question do you feel the need for ECC ram? I'm trying use my old 5800x as Small business server for our company as a developing/test server with a few Virtual machines running. It will be running 24/7
@@GearSeekers My guess is he must have been an older esxi adopter. If my memory serves me right early days esxi had a fairly strict hardware compatibility list. Deviating from that list would introduce some weird problems. Alot of amd products then where not recommended by the hcl. I'm sure much has changed and these kinds of vids make me want to have a fiddle with esxi at home again.

Yeah that was my idea as well. We had 2 servers doing things and all I ever wanted was one box that does it all.
