How much RAM do you recommend for a photography workflow with Lightroom Classic and Photoshop on the new MacBook Pro with M4 Pro chip? I work with RAW photos with 40+ megapixels. Are there any workflows where choosing 48GB would be better than 24GB?
Personally I use Photoshop in combination with a lot of other adobe products including Adobe XD, Illustrator and InDesign. And for that purpose I would definitely go at least 36 or 48GB of Unified Memory (which they say is allegedly double normal RAM) I’d recommend if you’re only using Photoshop and Lightroom, start off with 24GB first, you have two weeks to change your mind and upgrade if need be. Just to prevent you from spending too much extra money without needing all that excessive power. Keen to hear how you go with your new MacBook once you get it!
There's a channel call Artisright that does a whole breakdown of the models and performance differences for lightroom. I'm still using a 14" M1 MBP, with 1:1 previews to make it a bit easier on the machine.
Such a calm, sweet unboxing tbh M4 Max is overkill for web design if you are running browser-based tools like Canva, but you've got the money, so why not take the best product. I build software and run local LLMs, and it flies through all, such that sometimes I miss friction in life, it is so smooth
After using it for the past 2-3 days I did try to stress test it by opening a bunch of Adobe applications at the same time. Unfortunately the rainbow buffering wheel of death did appear, especially when using InDesign. Activity Monitor is also showing that I’m consistently using around 32GB of unified memory out of the 36GB I have (Which is kinda crazy as unified memory is supposed to equal 2x RAM) I even attended a Genius Bar appointment yesterday and they did advise me to upgrade to the 48GB or 64GB of unified memory 😅😭 Hope you found that helpful! Would this be a topic you’d be interested in me making a more in depth video on?
@@emptistudio Great video! Just a quick tip on the RAM - just because you saw 32gb out of 36gb of ram being used doesn't mean you're almost out of RAM. Mac OS uses wasted Ram. If you upgrade to the 48gb variant, you'll constantly see that you're at 36-40gb of ram doing the same tasks. So except you're constantly getting those buffering wheels and your memory pressure is not on green, then you'd be more than fine with the 36gb
I actually just use my phone, it's the iPhone 14 Pro Max and I use the Enhance Image feature in CapCut to up the quality to HD... Honestly biggest hack 🤣
I had the M1 Pro 16" for the last 3 years and it was time to upgrade. I got the M4 Pro with 48gb memory since I do a lot of pro work. Love it, but I got It in Space Black and these finger prints are horrible...to this day, my Silver M1 Pro looks brand new and aged beautifully (as you alluded to). I think I am going to exchange this for the Silver even though when clean, this black is amazing looking.
Anorher workaround for a matte screen is the privacy screen that apple sells. It has two sides. One side glossy and the pther side is matte. So something to look into if you want a matte screen
I’m stopping by the Apple Store to see this nano texture IRL. I’m a huge glossy fan and mostly use my computers in controlled light work environments. Losing color saturation and black levels is something I don’t think I can give up. As they say once you go black you can never go back!
@@emptistudio Okay so I stopped by the Apple Store and spent a good half hour looking at both side by side. Here’s my take… I can see the appeal of the nano texture. It definitely suppressed the reflections, not fully, but enough where you are not distracted by it. Honestly, I wouldn’t have noticed the reflections on the glass version if you didn’t point it out to me. That being said the blacks are definitely elevated and the colors don’t pop as much as the glass version. The best way to describe it is the glass version is like you are looking out a car window and the nano texture feels more like looking at a piece of art on canvas. It’s softer and more muted. Which one you prefer boils down to preference. If you are on the go a lot, work outside or have difficult lighting conditions to deal with (e.g. studio lights, office lights, sunlight) the nano is probably the way to go. If you have a good light controlled setup, enjoy sharp contrast and watch a lot of video content the regular glass would be my preference. I could definitely use the nano texture on occasion when I travel and take my laptop with me, but most of the time I’m just using it at home where I can manage the light conditions. So for the 10% of the time the nano texture would help, is not worth it for me. That being said…If they ever came out with nano texture for the iPhone where I’m regularly on the go with, I would definitely get the nano texture version.
Okay one more update...I actually went out and purchased both MacBook Pro M4s one with nano and one without. This was at the suggestion of the Apple employee since there is an extended holiday return policy to January 8th 2025! He just said try them both out and see which one you like better...And so for about a week now I have been using both... As per my original recommendation, given my light controlled environment...The text is absolutely sharper on the glossy screen...Some complain that this might cause eye fatigue, but for me this means not having to wear reading glasses as much when using my laptop. The other issue is the screen is definitely grainier and softer on the nano...Think heavy anti-aliasing...At least for my use case of being in a light controlled environment I will absolutley stick with the glossy display. The nano-texture will only be appreciated for maybe 5-10% of the time and so not worth the loss of clarity and sharpness for me.

Not the best choice. The maxed-out 14” MacBook Pro doesn’t perform as well as the 16” due to thermal throttling. So, if you’re going for the 14”, choose it with the Pro chip, and if you need the performance of the Max chip, the 16” is the better choice.

I use photoshop and light room and I have an M4 max and it uses roughly 40-48 gbs of ram while using lightroom so I would go 48 at the MINIMUM
48 may not be enough to be very honest.

It’s not 3x faster than a m1…. Most of those specs they compare it to is based off Intel versus M chips. It might be 1.3 times faster than m1.
