Wow, I just came across this while starting to pull ideas for a glam/kitchenette/bar area I'm designing for a client. She wants to do dark walls & the house is a beautiful 5000 sq ft property in the woods of upstate NY so I want to come up with a dark paint color that ties in with nature. I happened to find this & wow, what an amazing teacher this lady is! Love her approach & I'm getting so inspired just watching her talk about the tones! Good thing she doesn't live close by or I'd be showing up on her doorstep with a cake & flowers just to get to spend some time with her:))
Very good. You are giving my pictures a depth they did not have before when I was trying to use black and white to lighten and darken. ...and even though I went into more "sophisticated" lightening and darkening, they didn[t have this sound basis in knowing what I was doing. Thanks so much Dianne.
Hi Dianne, I just started watching your video's, and love them. I'm a Vietnam Veteran with Agent Orange illness, and I paint for relaxation. I want to thank you for your sharing knowledge of painting. A happy person. Johnny
You are a fantastic teacher!! Thank you so much!! Your Quick tips make me so happy and excited. I am writing from Southtowns Ouest of France . Florence
Thanks Ma'am 🙏 Use of Raw umber and burnt umber to cooler and neutral values and use of raw sienna and burnt sienna to create warmer shadows was a good lesson to learn Thanks again Ma'am 🙏
This was a great help as earth colours and which one to choose still gives me problems. Also it would be nice for a video on mixing different sand(beach) colours as there are many different coloured ones. Liked
The best way to learn to use these is to practice working with them. I could show you zillions of "how to" tips, but none of them would substitute for the experience of observing nature, then applying what I DO show you to what you observe. Give it a try - you'll see what I'm talking about.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction Good point. Maybe you could show maybe 5 reference beaches of different sands and just show how you choose the colours you do. I get myself in a real mess especially with earth colours lol.
Thanks for the tip. Today I learned the difference between the burnt and raw color. Now I know why certain colors are named burnt. I have been becoming a nerd for color mixing. Playing around with what can be done with color
I just love your lessons! It is so interesting to listen to your explanations on how to think and why the effect occurs when mixing colors. Thank you!!!
This video and the prior Quick Tip 210 were very timely for me!!! I was struggling with color choices for a portrait of my mother, wanting to give it an "old school" look. Many Thanks!
This is great! Thank you! I'll be digging out that tube of raw Sienna to play with. Can you give us a tip on simplifying things in nature? There is so much detail when I go out to paint I get really bogged down in it, and not knowing what or how to simplify
Not long after we started doing these Quick Tips, I did two that you might find helpful: Quick Tip 12 - ruclips.net/video/RGJZhGOSHIQ/видео.html and Quick Tip 13 - ruclips.net/video/_YI9n4g-10s/видео.html . Meanwhile, I'll put your request on our schedule.
I am new to your very helpful instructions, and very glad to have found you!! Is there any way to go back, or refer to previous tips?? I’m sure I have missed a great deal of helpful informations!
Nazanin, your color choices will depend upon the colors you see in the scene and those depend upon the local color of the streets, buildings, trees and direction of the light source. The best way to find your colors is to observe what you are looking at. In bright sunlight, each image will include a local color in light and that will change (get darker and cooler) in shadow. Find the hue first, then the value, then the intensity of the hue.
That makes me wonder, is there an advantage of darkening yellow, orange and red with earth colors vs. black? I mean, you need an earth color for each hue to darken it and the range is limited, while with black, you can darken any hue and by as much as you want.
There are dark earth colors available, plus the complements of all the warm colors are available in dark, transparent tube colors. Black tends to deaden the hue in middle to light value mixes, but can be useful when a hue change is needed along with an intensity change. It works best, though, with darker mixes.
@@IntheStudioArtInstruction By "deaden the hue in middle to light value mixes", do you mean black reduces the chroma more stongly than earth colors do when mixed with bright colors, such as yellow? That makes sense, but I quess, yellow ocre is no more intense than a mix of green and deep yellow or orange? Cadmium scarlet I'd deepen with Cadmium red deep anyway, if a want really high chroma.
👌👌 I'm very happy to see your wonderful video. 💖💖💖👌👌👌👌 It's really great and beautiful. ♥♡♥♡ ♥ I am a RUclipsr who paints but I learn a lot from you. So thank you. 🌈🍻🍻My friend.👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
J'ai visionné nombre de vos vidéos, très bien expliquées, merci! cependant je travaille l'aquarelle qui est une technique différente, mais pour les mélanges de couleurs cela m'aide beaucoup! bon week end!
Although the techniques for working with watercolor are so different from those of oils, the principles of composing are universal. I always think of the way we use color as an integral part of the composing process.
Check out Quick Tip 7, Caring for Brushes ( ruclips.net/video/WpUwu-LLsZk/видео.html ). To your other questions, my opinion is that if you worry about wasting paint, you do injustice to your painting, however I do have a tip that might be helpful in Quick Tip 162 ( ruclips.net/video/xvlYAxw7uVY/видео.html ) and this one, Quick Tip 172 ( ruclips.net/video/qre6FyJN5kU/видео.html ) I will put varnishing on our schedule.
I don't use any medium while painting unless I want an area to dry quickly. In that case, I'll use a tiny bit of Liquin. But I prefer the consistency of the paint as it exits the tube. I use only brands that have that consistency.

Keep in mind that the cool/warm factor her is referring only to the relationship of the umbers and siennas.

When I add black or umber to earth yellows or bright yellows it creates a natural looking green.
Use whatever works.
Such good and useful tips thank you

One of the very best tips Diane.. I have neutral color in my watercolor set, is it a total waste of money if I have the colors you mentioned?
I wouldn't say a waste of money. You can always enhance those neutrals with more saturated hues.
Also the famous Zorn palette for portraits has only yellow ocher a red (cad red) white and black
That makes me wonder, is there an advantage of darkening yellow, orange and red with earth colors vs. black?
I mean, you need an earth color for each hue to darken it and the range is limited, while with black, you can darken any hue and by as much as you want.

Yes you can!

Many of the colors on my palette are transparent as are many I use from time to time that I don't keep on the palette.
Yes, I enjoyed this tip by all means!
