Not married but from a child of divorce, about balance of holidays with two families, we always did thanksgiving with one, Christmas with the other and switch every year 😊
Alone time... In the beginning of my relationship I wanted to be present with him all the time, but after about 10 years, he still wanted to be with me all the time. He even wanted to be with me in the bathroom. I remember one time I took an especially long bath just to have "alone time" and he came in the bathroom and I got so so pissed! Eventually, everyone needs some alone time, PRIVACY! It doesn't mean that you don't love the other person. It just means that you want to be yourself without that person for a "moment", you just need a sense of privacy.

Hi I'm also Monica! Me and my husband also had a long distant relationship for a couple of years before we were married. I'm from Texas and he is from Missisouri. We've been married for almost 5 years and now live together in Missisouri. We would rotate the holidays. If we spent Thanksgiving in Texas then we spent Christmas in Missisouri and swapped it the next year. Now we have 2 kids and we will still be swapping Thanksgiving, but we will be spending Christmas eve in Missisouri with his family and Christmas morning in our home and then traveling to see my family in Texas for Christmas night thru New Years.
To add a comment about sharing holidays between families. In our case our two daughters and families live in Texas and we reside in Missouri. Both of our daughters' husbands also have their families to consider. We tend to swap holidays between families especially the more important ones like Thanksgiving and Christmas. If it is not your turn to have say Thanksgiving a particular year, don't begrudge the family that is spending the holiday together. You can always celebrate the holiday on a different date when you are all together. It's not the date that is important but the wonderful times spent together that count.

The way my family does it (my dad's family and my mom's family) is we go to my dad's family's house on the day before the holiday (Christmas Eve, thanksgiving eve, etc.) And we go to my mom's family on the day of the holiday.

7:28 My wife moved up to Canada from the US to be with me when we were in our mid 20s, and went through the same thing as Sam. It took almost 18 months to finally get her permanent residency and allow her to travel back to see her family. It will be important to let Sam go back home and see family and familiar places when he allowed to travel. He'll probably want to have more trips back to the UK in the first year or so afterwards. Like you said though, communication is important, but understanding and recognizing when you or your partner are feeling homesick or missing family is critical. Make time and effort for that.

Holidays are soooo difficult for us and we've been married 27 years. Our parents are both near us. My brother and his family live in Iowa though. So usually on Thanksgiving they come back home. So we stop at my husband's families for a couple of hours before we go to my parents. My husband's Mom wanted Christmas Eve with his side, so we have everyone from his family here and then my parents come over Christmas night for dinner. Now our kids do their own thing too because one is married and the other has a serious boyfriend. So things are going to change again because we want to share our kids with their husband's family or boyfriend's family. Our kids don't feel very close to my husband's family. His Dad seems to forget they are also his Grandkids.

While myself and my wife's distances aren't as much as yourselves while we lived together at her parents we would alternate who we saw Christmas day but now we live in wales we are 4 hrs ish from both families so we try and split all holidays between them both and they now come to us around Christmas as we have two young boys.

For our family gathering we do christmas with my family then the New year with his family, for the following year we can switch or take both holidays just for us. But im not so sure if it might be useful in your situation since your family are in different country. 😊
