This sounds very like the case of John Haigh, the acid bath murderer, hanged in 1949. Haven't got past the plastic fingernails and the repulsive Detective Superintendent being patronising yet, but that was Haigh's MO.

I agree it sounds like the Haigh case. Martin Clunes appeared as the lead on Tv a few years ago. Played Haigh well.
