  • A quick look into the working relationship and, as I argue, later friendship between two giants of the Pan-African Movement, W. E. B. Du Bois and Kwame Nkrumah.
Thank you very much to Brandon Jyrome Jones and Lisandro Boccaccio for the VO they provided for this video.

They did a lot for us. We need to come together to continue their vision.

Absolutely. Well said. I try to make that my mission statement for my historical research and a lot of my filmmaking.

ABSOLUTELY. Many of our people sacrificed so much to improve the conditions of black people worldwide and our generation needs to continue that legacy.

when in Ghana in 2010 on a Fulbright at UG Legon, I delivered a speech on this subject at the Nkumah Centennial celebration, Cantonments, Ghana, before Nkrumah's daughter and son. My efforts to research their relationship while in Ghana were hindered by fiercely held attitudes, loving and despising Nkrumah, which made interviews difficult if not impossible.

Wow James that is super interesting. I'd love to read a copy of your speech or what research you were able to compile despite the difficulties with interviews. If you have any of this handy could you send it to me?
For this project I wasn't able to conduct any interviews, so I mainly relied on their correspondence, (which was unfortunately pretty limited until they started talking about Du Bois moving to Ghana) and a few secondary sources. When I started, I was honestly quiet surprised at how little there was to go off of given their partnership in Du Bois' later life.

I also have recorded interviews with the people dispatched to Italy by Shirly Graham Du Bois to learn all of the engineering necessary to create Ghana TV and Ghana Radio. They also discussed Shirley's insistence that upon returning, they go to Winneba, for "re-education"

Dubois got to thank Nkrumah for allowing him to be Ghanaian citizen. But Dubois was too arrogant especially with his rows with the Honourable Marcus Garvey and Booker T Washington.
