i think derek aproaches the keyboards exactly the way it should be played, ive seen a lotta people hatin on this guy for not being "good enough" but in the end its not a piano and its not supposed to be played like a piano derek is the exact definition of a keyboardist
A synth is not just a bunch of keys: that's a piano. A synth is a keys + pitch bend + mod wheel + pedals, and only Derek is able to use them all effectively and thus use them as they were meant to
Derek and Matt Guillory are my favorite keyboardist. I love how they tackle the keyboard as another guitar in the band and extract such amazing sounds.

I´ve said this before: Derek´s sound is way better than most Rudess sounds. Apart from Chaos in motion Keytar, in general Derek´s playing is way more powerful. Technic wise, Rudess is parsecs ahead.
Well, he for sure has much better sound than Ruddess. But any synth he plays, he arrives to very similar sounds at the end. You guys simply forget about the master of sound and hooks - Kevin Moore. He has no competition. He can create sounds that none of those two can. His music could be called dark yet in all that darkness, great melodies shine through and sound colors beat both of the above hands down. I play keyboards. I get sick of listening Ruddess (who otherwise is a wonderful guy), and I will recognize Sherinian "blindfolded", even when I listen to something of his that I didn't hear before and had no idea he plays on it beforehand. useless arpeggio? what a low minded musician you are or maybe a beginner. LOL! arpeggio is one of the most technical style of playing keys. if you're already a virtuoso musician then mastering arpeggios is one of the best techniques not only for keys but for all musical instruments. if you're a keys player or guitar player then try executing arpeggios with an accented accurate phrasing with dynamics up to 4 octaves of the notes or more if arpeggio is just useless to you then meaning to say it's just a piece of cake for you then show us your vids. lmao!!!
I think the difference between kevin moore, derek, and jordan, kevin is more on targeting emotional impact, while sherinan is more exploring his style snd approach on the instrument, and jordan is versatile but I think focus on showmanship and technicalities, I like both style but there is something in moore's music that you will like listen time to time
D.S. is a fan of guitar music (from his words Van Halen was a one of influences), and he's playing keyboards with guitaristic approach, pulling synth controllers like a whammy bar and playing sort of tapping technique on the keyboard. He's capable to play electric guitar too (and he did occasionally with Dream Theater live)

People don’t know what the meaning of keyboard in a band. What proves it it’s the fact that many see Rudess better than Derek, or even better than Kevin. They confuse technique and speed in the instrument with the meaning of what music is and what it really means in a work. Derek and Kevin are the meaning of keyboard in a music with their tones, aggressive chords and their string sounds and lead phrases. Jordan is very good but is like a musician in the wrong instrument.
