Excellent discussion, Jeff. As a native Washingtonian, first generation American with part Russian heritage, I am always gauging Russian versus American evolution. I can safely say that twenty three years ago, we underwent a "silent" coup by a global network that had it's hand in the Russian revolution. The parallels between the US's entering wars of questionable nature, and Winston Churchill's machinations of the 1930s are profound and worth studying. On the foreign policy front, the shift began already with the dissolution of the Soviet Union which began already in the 1970s with the "refusenik" movement. The "H-caust" movement also began around the same time, even though over 25 years had elapsed since the end of WW2 with little fanfare of the alleged atrocities that took place up until then. The best lens to view US foreign policy over the past 120 years was summed up by Lord Ismay: "keep the Soviet Union out, the Americans in, and the Germans down". One other observance is the impact that Hollywood has had on national politics over the past 80 years. It is woven into the collective American DNA. How many are aware that the well known actor John Houseman got his start working for the "Office of War Information" in 1942, immediately after the US entered into WW2. OWI was headed by journalist, Elmer Davis. From Britannica: "Davis won respect for his handling of official news and propaganda, although his liberal stance, especially his opposition to military censorship, generated controversy. In 1945 he resumed his career as a news broadcaster with the American Broadcasting Company until 1953. Davis was an outspoken critic of Senator Joseph R. McCarthy’s tactics investigating alleged communist infiltration of the U.S. government".

Great work Jeff. I just wondered are you familiar with the Nick Duffell's work. There is someone else who I think Duffell refers to in Wounded Leaders who also talks about the Anglo-Saxon elite and what lies behind their values and tendencies towards violence. I will have to try and find out his nam e - he concentrates a lot on the corporate and financial world. Someone said that the US learned everything it knows and does from Britain. (In economics that is certainly true. Paul Samuelson basically just restored British Empire Era Classical Economics. ) I wonder also how much Todd talks about the influence of Wall Street. You will find there is a big connection between Goldman Sachs in particular and key political decision makers, both at the Fed and in the US government. It is a kind of revolving door. Wall Street is not physically in Washington. But it is absolutely at the very centre of things.
On Jewish representation in Foreign Affairs, what staggers me is also the huge amount of Eastern European representation. Bill Bradley did a speech many years back now on youtube that lamented NATO expansion and the lost chance that the collapse of the USSR and the goodwill of Perestroika leaders gave. He specifically references large numbers of Eastern Europeans and Eastern European Americans that lay behind the aggressive stance taken towards the Soviet Union. And he is really referring to elites both in Eastern Europe and the US. On Eastern Europe there is a tendency in the West to look at it as a monogamous block. Even in Ukraine pro-Russian and pro-Western Ukrainians largely divide on class lines (see Ischenko "Into the Abyss"). I also wondered about why these Americans of Ukrainian Jewish ancestry support a country that inflicted such horrors on the Jewish people. It was not only Babi Yar. The behaviour of the Trawniki Guards and the Ukrainian SS in places like Belzec was enough to even alarm the German Nazis, and survivors of the Death Camps say they often feared them more than the Germans themselves. Interestingly though Shoah awareness groups have not hesitated in calling perpetrators out even if it embarasses the establishment, hence that incident in the Canadian Parliament. They have also condemned Israel's actions in the Gaza ghetto. Zalensky, an Ukrainian Jew and his links with the Azov Brigade is another curiousity.
@@simonsmatthewZelensky was bankrolled by the same guy who bankrolled Azov. He was also threatened by Right Sektor that they would hang him from a tree if he implemented the Minsk accords.

@@donalddon5 It would have been interesting to know when these Jews, now in power in D.C., have left Ukraine; were their ancestors there during WWII, or had they left that country before then? Who has suffered in the hands of whom? Were not the Christians who suffered from the atheist Khazarians, who then were forced to adopt a religion? and chosen Judaism? And anyway, does that really give justification for “a little revenge”? This is not “a little revenge”; this is pure hatred and greed to amass the riches of that country and to subjugate the population; something that they have tried throughout history. They failed then and it looks like they will fail again. Praise the Lord!
“Wisdom and knowledge, as well as virtue, diffused generally among the body of the people, being necessary for the preservation of their rights and liberties,” he wrote in “Thoughts on Government” in 1776. (Came to mind at 17mins)
I remember around 10 years ago the word oligarch was used by russian media, basically after the fall of the soviet Union Vladimir Putin told the oligarchs to keep their money and not to interfere in politics, as this would allow corruption to take hold, well look at Russia today, growing economy, rising living standards, better family benefits, along with the restablisment of the church, building a church on the place where the tsar and family were murdered along with the nobility to a certian degree, the list goes on and on, the one thing that has held Russia together is the holiday day of the great patriot war, patriotism is 90% politics, this is what bids a people together, as we in the west have allowed the rise of oligarchy, who believe they are god. The west has also dissolved the core institutes like education, traditional values, culture and religion.
absolutely. He contrasts the liberal oligarchy of the West with the conservative or authoritarian democracy of Russia. He also says how much the West misled itself with all the silly rhetoric like this about Putin and Russia. Great comment.
Check the ethnicity of the Russian oligarchs and you'll see there is a predominance of one race like what is happening in the circle of policymakers in the US. Russia managed to check their advancement but America failed.

I really look forward to your translation of Todd's book. Perhaps I can suggest you make a critique of the realist school. I thought Mearsheimer was the answer to everything as many or at least some of his predictions have come spectacularly true. Also if you could discuss Nihilism defined as; the State is the author of the what is the Good Life and what is bad, regardless of what religion, moral and common sense say in contrast with current definition of nihilism.
I am planning a video on why Mearsheimer is wrong and his realism unreal. I have logged the nihilism idea and will take a look at it later in the year.
Watched your helpful summary of Todds latest again and was amused by the idea of the Shallow State... certainly what we have been watching of US "policy" is a sign of its complete failure to undertand anything...closely followed by the EU. I do wonder though why his book has not been translated still...
Wow second one I’m watching and loving it so far. Heard about this book but was a little skeptical because religion in many ways made Americans meanies. Always against anything that helps the poor and vulnerable. But his point about smaller and smaller social groups is bang on! Capitalists promote individualism and migration etc because it makes them more money. But it’s making us miserable af! Life doesn’t feel worth living
Exactly right. His point about religion is not as many people read it that the West would be better off if people believed in the old faiths again. It is that there is nothing that performs the social function of shared values and practices. Great comment
The Situationalist' idea of the Spectacle becomes internationalized.. vastly different from say the driving concern of the British Empire which ( with some glaring exceptions) was with balance and stability for trade. Even something as bad as the Opium War was ostensibly based on a supposed business motive.
@@theburningarchive Sorry didnt see this. I think one on the role of the West and Britain historially in the ME to now would be. But what bothers me is that his latest book has still not been translated. Do you know why not?
Very interesting ideas about the blob and their mileau/habitus. Wonder how Trump fits into this? The blob seems to oppose him fiercely. Because he is an existential threat to their habitus?
Very interesting question that in current context it is hard to answer directly. I think a key fact of Trump's success and failure was that he was an outsider, shaped by a different social habitus.
"A few cases of over representation...". "A few"? You deftly worked through that issue. Now think about the real centres of power in the west i.e. politics, the media and finance. Hard to be so deft all of a sudden
“Why do the Jews of Ukrainian origin have feelings of tenderness for Ukraine?” This is frankly idiotic. Unless you are a believer in collective guilt and inter-generational guilt, the anti-semitism of the 1940s is not going to harden your heart to the war crimes being carried out in Ukraine. In fact, traumatic family histories will surely make people extra sensitive to images of schools and hospitals being bombed. Germany has a vibrant Jewish population today; that wouldn’t be true if people walked around seething with anger for the mistreatment of their ancestors. I'd also add, if Emmanuel Todd believes in harbouring such resentment over historical wrongs, it's odd he has remained in France where the Vichy government sent 72,500 Jews to concentration camps.
Anne Appelbaum’s biography indicates her ancestors left Russia when it was under Alexander the III, so maybe that influences her Russia hatred, even marrying Sikorski from Poland, who also hates Russia. I read that she holds Polish citizenship citizenship, but not sure.
I disagree on Mearsheimer and realism. The only way to understand the Ukraine war is to see what the US has done to Europe with this disastrous war. And more importantly, so many unnecessary deaths on both sides. Mearsheimer explains it so well.
Suggests that chronopolitics should be understood not as an alternative to geopolitics but as one of its crucial elements - and one that can also be found in the project of a critical geopolitics😅
Thank you for the great content. Just a suggestion maybe it's just me but I find the tone of delivery a bit hard to follow for long because it sounds patronizing. Anyone curious enough to be here you can address as grown ups. No offense.
Democracy began as a very large thing that could not be controlled by institutions, in the 19th 20th centuries. Now technology has made it possible to control and undermine it, which the oligarchies have achieved . To overcome this either we have to start from scratch which would be very painful or the technology would need to be diminished, also painful. The east is a fresh version that will replace us if we don't improve.
excellent point. This is partly what I mean about "post-democracy". I think we all need to adapt to the co-existence of different kinds of political processes. Just as early 20th century democracy adapted to traditional sources of authority and power. Not always successfully!

This is a good point. There is a large constituency for America's disastrous foreign policy within America. This video focussed on the people making the decisions. Might need to address the popular belief the USA is the "greatest" another day.
Mearsheimer himself departs from realism in his discussions of US foreign policy today because he explains it largely in terms of domestic politics. But then, to the extent there is a bipartisan foreign policy consensus, there are also no checks and balances. Biden reminds me of the crazy driver with his foot on the gas and his hands off the steering wheel
I am not convinced that the eventual religious aspirations of the elites ever affected the greed of the elites. It seemed to me that the writer's thesis suffers from excessive endogenicity and ignores the transformations in the balance of power that, for the first time in more than a century, threatens to remove the primacy of the West. Another aspect that seemed flawed to me is the relevance given to a supposed decline of a Jewish intellectual caste, which somehow guided the worldview of the 1%.
I don't think the RUclipsr is representing the book well, especially not chapter 10, which is the chapter being discussed in this video. I also agree with your idea in general, but it's not as bad as this video makes it out to be. The chapter talks about the Walt and Mearsheimer books on US foreign policy establishment sociology and makes a fairly reasonable case for certain trends in personnel and leadership. Todd mentions the Jewish Origins of figures like Blinken and Nuland and surmises they have 'forgotten' about the anti-Semitism of Ukraine in the 1880s to support his claim about the lost memory via lost religion of the American Political Establishment.
@@cyberpunkalphamale I'm going to try to get Emmanuel Todd's book, because one thing caught my attention, the characterization of the American elite as a Gang.

other titles - the nature of America - oligarchy and nihilisms europe oriantal Russobia and postmodernism ?? This is great. you done a great job in making the distinction between realist school and Todd's school of linear modernity I wonde though about this shallow thought idea though - In terms of the Deep State probably the most important person i can think of is Peter Dale Scott's work - the ex canadian diplomat who sees the deep state in terms of its mechanism's of power - not so much about this quasi conspiratorial idea of grand thinkers plotting - but Deep as in - the obvious covert work of the C.I.A. and how these mechanisms produce functionaries within the system of power, who are shallow and bureaucratic. the Novelist Javier Marias work gets inside this world in beautiful detail. Depth is more about obscured, hidden, deep "in the shadows" as Dick Cheney famously said about the torture programs in Iraq. etc etc. But i also agree there is a kind of auto-pilot hubris going on in the blob - just following orders with very little thought to the effects i'm thinking Blinken and the State Dept, and their monumental stupidity in Russia, and the horrors of gaza - these people are on auto-pilot , shallow cogs in the wheel of empire
The theory of realism always seemed a dubious theory to me - a little like the also spurious Homo Economicus, the man with infinite ability to make rational decisions. Which has never been spotted in the wild. Why would anyone assume the people in power - and they are individual people with names - would act super rational? And not be animated by personal interests and ambitions, biases, irrational beliefs and resentments, fear, corruption, nepotism, stupidity, etc. Like everybody else. To imply anything else, seems almost to deny the central tenet of Christianity: we are all fallen. Also the state of affairs really ought to dissuade anybody that states are very rational players.
Listening to Mearsheimer, I think it has similar origins in simplified game theory, which at its heart is a form of economics. Mearsheimer reduces states to single motive (survival) actors in a highly simplified 1 v 1 game (hegemon v challenger). Rand Corporation applied these theories to superpower competition in the 50s and 60s. I feel it lives on now as international relations "theory". I would need to check my sources to be sure. "If we want to anticipate Amerika's Strategic Choice's we need to abandon with all hast the axioms of rationality".....so essentially what Emmanuel Todd is saying is AMERIKA IS MAD, essentially!
or that they have fled reality as I discussed here johnmenadue.com/the-crooked-timber-of-an-unhappy-dangerous-american-empire/

Paul Samuelson basically just restored British Empire Era Classical Economics. )
I wonder also how much Todd talks about the influence of Wall Street.
@@simonsmatthewThere been a lot of talk about destroying Ukraine, Rice, under Obama talks about this as well as RAND papers. If I was a Jew like Blinken', Schumer, Nuland, I might seek a little revenge myself.
@@donalddon5
It would have been interesting to know when these Jews, now in power in D.C., have left Ukraine; were their ancestors there during WWII, or had they left that country before then? Who has suffered in the hands of whom? Were not the Christians who suffered from the atheist Khazarians, who then were forced to adopt a religion? and chosen Judaism?
And anyway, does that really give justification for “a little revenge”?
This is not “a little revenge”; this is pure hatred and greed to amass the riches of that country and to subjugate the population; something that they have tried throughout history.
They failed then and it looks like they will fail again. Praise the Lord!
Clearly the blueprint is.still being followed ,with the subjugation of the Gaza population. This seems to be the plan for the USA population as well.
A unique ecosystem of sorts. Thank you Jeff.

The Russians accept even revere their history, warts and all. You don't see them pulling down statues.
Great segment.

Thanks for the breakdown. I have a machine translated copy of the text in English. I feel Todd will become a bigger name in the next few years.

Can we get the book translated???
I understand from the publisher there are no current plans to license English rights. Disappointing...
The Ukrainian eagerness to persecute "The Chosen" in WW2 was not some act for no reason at all. It was retribution for what had happened since 1917.

"A few cases of over representation...". "A few"?
You deftly worked through that issue.
Now think about the real centres of power in the west i.e. politics, the media and finance. Hard to be so deft all of a sudden
Do we know whether the book will be published in English?
I have asked Gallimard (the publisher) and will let my Channel know through the community tab when they reply.
I'd also add, if Emmanuel Todd believes in harbouring such resentment over historical wrongs, it's odd he has remained in France where the Vichy government sent 72,500 Jews to concentration camps.
thank you.

I do wonder if there should be an international commission into CIA/US foreign policy at some point.
@@theburningarchive Oh please, let it be so. Followed by an ICC trial.
True. Curiously, the metaphor of a crazy driver was used to describe the Russian state in the last years before Feb 1917.
Democracies always fail.
All happy democracies are the same; all unhappy democracies are unhappy in their own way, perhaps?
You said they leead nato to disaster. No they leead Muslim Arab countries to disaster

@@cyberpunkalphamale A separate comment, which does not concern the theme of this video, but which is dear to me, in central countries, even the poor look with contempt at the people of other nations.

This is great. you done a great job in making the distinction between realist school and Todd's school of linear modernity
I wonde though about this shallow thought idea though - In terms of the Deep State probably the most important person i can think of is Peter Dale Scott's work - the ex canadian diplomat who sees the deep state in terms of its mechanism's of power - not so much about this quasi conspiratorial idea of grand thinkers plotting - but Deep as in - the obvious covert work of the C.I.A. and how these mechanisms produce functionaries within the system of power, who are shallow and bureaucratic.
the Novelist Javier Marias work gets inside this world in beautiful detail.
Depth is more about obscured, hidden, deep "in the shadows" as Dick Cheney famously said about the torture programs in Iraq. etc etc.
But i also agree there is a kind of auto-pilot hubris going on in the blob - just following orders with very little thought to the effects
i'm thinking Blinken and the State Dept, and their monumental stupidity in Russia, and the horrors of gaza - these people are on auto-pilot , shallow cogs in the wheel of empire
Current NATO Washington Gang
is like fictional)? political satire?
film from 1960s called Dr. Strangelove!!
Great comment
