FILM DESCRIPTION:
Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) is a successful writer of teen literature who returns to her hometown with a dual mission: to relive her glory days and steal away her now-married high-school sweetheart (Patrick Wilson). However, her mission does not go exactly to plan, and she finds her homecoming more problematic than she expected. Instead, Mavis forms an unusual bond with a former classmate (Patton Oswalt), who has also found it difficult to move past high school.

This scene is so interesting, because Mavis finally has a moment of clarity, and this hanger-on from high school allows Mavis to slip back into her delusions. It shows how neither woman has moved forward from high school BS, and how both are stuck in their heads.
Yes, she's the empathetic but unfortunately misguided enabler.
How is she delusional?
@@dorinioanaalexandra that people in mercury couldn't be as happy as they seem because they aren't like Mavis or want the same things as mavis
@@megb7758 I’m really struggling to understand this perspective as I believe we are taught since an young age that we need to better ourselves, get out of our comfort zone, strive for better, travel the world, learn etc. The people in mercury haven’t really done much in life. That doesn’t mean her abusive behaviour (talking badly to the new mom, seducing a married man etc) is justified, on contrary.
@@dorinioanaalexandra Yeah I also never really understood that. Obviously Mavis can treat those around her a lot better, and she has to take some more care of herself. Trying to break up a marriage and drinking diet Coke first thing in the morning aren’t exactly indicative of a healthy person. But you know, you have to give it to her; at some point she found the courage to move out of her hometown and meet new people, which got her a decent career. Doesn’t matter that the series is finished. Work can be found elsewhere.
I don’t know, what she did in the movie is horrible, but the people who invited her out of pity are equally to blame. Parents knew something was up but didn’t say anything. Whole freaking town knew she wasn’t okay but noone except Matt cared enough to actually help her. So much for that small town kindness.
In the end I think it’s just about being proud of who you are. Mavis isn’t a bad person, but she’s lost and trying to find clarity in the past. Had she been proud of who she is, an accomplished writer making a decent living in a nice city, than she would have never dug up the past, and none of this would have happened. She would have also known then that everyone can be proud of who they are and what they have done, and she wouldn’t have seen the whole of Mercury as some depressed hick village just because she doesn’t want to live there. You have to be proud of yourself in order to see the pride of others.
This was so savage
"People in Mercury might as well die"
"Take me to the Mini-Apple"
"Oh, Sandra.. you're good here"
If you're lame enough to refer to Minneapolis as "the mini-apple" you won't like it very much.
“You’re good here, Sandra” OUCH 🤣
Underrated gem as hell...this movie is a must watch..
devastating scene, what a masterpiece.
Never even heard of this film, good job RUclips
Same here😁
You’re missing out! Watch this movie, it’s incredible! Charlize is absolutely amazing in it
I remember thinking it was a good movie. Psychological problems masked by success/looks. Plus, the TFC song "The Concept" is a nostalgic favorite of mine. Just like the characters in the movie.
i laughed so hard
when charlize said: my life is a disaster!
and the girl replied: just buy yourself a new dress. 😂😂😂
Her knee popped when she got up off the chair.
This is in my top 5 of favorite movies 🍿
What are the others?
What are the others?
I hated Mavis so bad for not taking Sandra with her in Minneapolis
that is cuz Mavis is a one of the most hurtful villians in film history
To the Minniapple*
@@Zenexfriend 🤣🤣🤣🤣 this comment
You missed the point. Mavis realized that the town is so lame because despite her fails as an adult random people worship her just because of shallow things because the town is so simple that someone like her stands out. Plus, she knows what Sandra is saying is not true because she realizes that there are good people in Mercury but the town is not for her. She also seems a bit unhinged to Mavis who is already unhinged.
@@michz9304 Well said. Also, Sandra was emotionally stunted to the point where she recalled every detail from high school. It seemed like she hadn’t moved on from that era either.
this is such narcissistic behavior. mavis needs the adoration of other people and when she gets it she is good. she doesnt care about anyone else but herself.
She's from Observe and Report.
Yeah what a good movie hey
Bruh is she evil
Beautiful actress

I LOVE HOW INTELLIGENT THE SISTER OF MATT IS. SHE JUST SAYS EVEFYTHING SHE THINKS MAVIS WANTS TO HEAR IN ORDER TO GET TO LIVE IN MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA
I wanted to do a review on this because in my older years i find my perspective has changed. This ending is significant because she helped Mavis realize why she left. She was above those people as she was never afraid to show her true colors. All those other ppl that lived in that town were not happy or fulfilled at all and they used mavis’s struggles to make themselves feel like they were above her. This movie is genius. You just have to dig past the surface to find the deeper meaning.
I still do believe that Sandra is an enabler here and Mavis gets back on her BS, but it also always stood out to me that the "midwestern nice" small town folk in her circle pretty much knew she was unravelling and let her fall on her face, even when they overtly expressed concern for her (mostly referring to Patrick Wilson's character, but haven't rewatched super recently and am going off memory.)
That's really good writing
this is so sad poor sandra
Damn it, fell to the algorithm again.
Because this is what she is.. nice catch by the way

So many failed films... So much wasted money and Charlize's time... Instead of 10 parts of "Atomic Blonde" with Boutella's legs on her broad shoulders...
