    When we are talking about lightweight, we don’t mean how much disk space the OS and the software takes up. We are talking how much CPU and memory it uses. You can have very lightweight Linux OS with a terabyte of software.

      I think one could make the argument, that sometimes you don't have the additional resources needed for the heavyweight install (there are alternative distros for that, though) or the necessary time or know-how to safely remove all of the components that you might view as "bloat", or even the ability to identify what might fit in that category. That's why some even enjoy building their own distros, or having highly custom Arch installs.
      I use Linux Mint btw, honestly it just works and I even switched over to the Cinnamon desktop after using XFCE for the longest time ever, plus not having such a heavy push for snaps is just sublime!

    • @Blaze6108
      @Blaze6108 3 месяца назад +7

      Idea: OS installs should be in 'reverse'. The OS comes with drivers and heavy machinery to support every possible hardware and application configuration, then at the end of the install or at any point later, the user can run a 'prune' or 'optimize' command that strips most things that fulfill both criteria of having never been used, and not being part of a 'common requirement' whitelist.

  • @kennystrawnmusic
    @kennystrawnmusic 3 месяца назад +19

    From my experience it depends on what specific resource it's heavy on, because this varies greatly:
    * Heavy on CPU: Gentoo, especially during installation and package management because it requires you to compile everything from source (if you don't have a Threadripper, it's going to take days to install)
    * Heavy on RAM: probably Mint or Pop! OS, although Gentoo also has an issue in this category when compiling qtwebengine in particular
    * Heavy on graphics: definitely Garuda
    * Heavy on disk space: there are several options here, and sure, Qubes is definitely one of them, but so too are penetration testing distros - Parrot for example will literally take up 16GB of disk space of whatever it's installed on, while a full, complete BlackArch installation (i.e. literally running `pacman -S blackarch) will set you back 60GB just in the sheer number of hacking tools alone. Not sure how Kali compares to those two as I haven't used it as much (only very briefly as CEHv12 switched entirely to Parrot for its official VM set).

    Interesting. I never see Mint as 'heavy' - in part cos just 3GB download (including LibreOffice and all other software basic user needs), but also because I use the MATE desktop, which now is about the same RAM (sometimes lower) than the 'lightweight' XFCE. Has all the functionality I could want and is intuitive. Mint out performs all other distros except in one area: it's not bleeding edge updates cos its based on Ubuntu, but we can never get around sacrificing bleeding edge software for stability, so fundamentally I prefer stability (and really, unless there is a specific new feature you want from software that's only compatible with a newer Ubuntu OS, then stability is always better).

    "Heaviest Linux Distro" the first thing i thought is exactly QubesOS (it need 16 GB of RAM and each virtual compartment is a VM of a distro so basicly distro containing another set of distros in it)

    The heaviest Linux OS distributions are those that are immutable or they install a package that contains all its dependencies without sharing with other packages. This results in considerably more storage for the OS but storage is cheap and getting cheaper all the time. I would rather avoid linked library hell and make it a thing of the past. Making things immutable improves security.

    Linux mint is the most put together out of the box Linux distro out there. I've tried other Ubuntu and Debian distros, arch, Slackware. I always come back to Linux mint. Because 9/10 times I found that several things didn’t work or weren’t easy to find a workaround because several things were missing from the distro in question. Out of the 3 desktop environments from mint xfce is my favorite it’s most like windows 7 it’s the simplest and easiest and lightweight. Plus most drivers for Wi-Fi and printers are already available in Linux Mint out of the box!!

      @andrewnoonan8175 Wayland is smooth but isn't as compatible as x11 with Nvidia GPU. The interesting aspects of Mint for I are its reliability and stability. Another thing I love that is Linux mint gui in some parts is much better than Windows!! Thats awesome. Mint reminds me of Mac OS. Just boot the PC and focus on development. Thanks for your instructions.

    Not sure Qubes fits into this, it's not exactly a Linux distro and even then it's so substantially different that it doesn't make sense here IMO. I think a better fit would be Garuda Gamer edition, comes with so much software per installed that you're not gonna use, and it's one of the most heavily visually customized distros.

Qube os boot fast actually in my personal experience.Also I'm having fun exploring trinity desktop environment. Elementary os looks nice but laggy on low powee hardware. Then gnome and kubuntu running reasonably fast but I prefer using kde cause i can disable most of the animation to make it snappy. Now I run i3 and compton on this slow laptop.

You just need to choose a distro, flash it into your usb drive with tools like rofi, and boot into your flash drive after turning off secure boot in your bios. From then you can either figure it out on your own, or use the internet for help. Good luck!

    The "recommended specs" are not a measurement, they are an estimated number recommended for a "good" experience, which is also not a measurement. Dont use those specs to measure how heavy a distro is. Measure it by running the distro and checking how much RAM, storage, CPU etc are ACTUALLY used by the distro 🤦

      The bloat in cubes os comes from having tons of actual separated virtual machines, so if a hacker want to get in and do anything, it needs to bypass each virtual machine.
      Instead in any other distro, the moment the hacker gets in, you are cooked
      So i would say it is safer and more private (since programs can't communicate with programs in other virtual machines)

    Linux Mint isn't "heavy", they specifically strip out crap like Snaps and other things you don't need and even provide a version of two very lightweight desktop environments. Just because they provide a few helper programs doesn't really make much difference. But the behind the scenes stuff they do does.
    Mint is based on Ubuntu, but is "lighter" than Ubuntu.
    But yeah, the whole thing is bollocks anyway, you can install Gentoo or Arch and then make it as bloated as anything.
