I’m an ABC and I gotta say you did a great job of explaining the basic essentials!!
Haha~ Great job Lauren! As a Chinese, I have to admit your explanation is perfect! I'm living in Europe and my western friends always complain that Chinese is a difficult language...I would suggest them in watching this video and I believe it will change their mind. Chinese is even easier than English sometimes!
One tip for other people who want to travel in China and do not want to learn any Chinese: Since most of people travelling in China can speak English, one could try to contact some professors/teachers in the local universities/high schools through emails. Let them recommend some students who want to practice English with foreigners. Problem solved! :)
I'm moving to China in a month and a half and this definitely makes me feel better about the difficult language barrier. I downloaded the app immediately! There's actually another really useful app called "WayGo" which is, I think, free and you can use your camera to point to Chinese characters and it'll translate it without you having to take a picture! It looks like it would be super useful traveling the streets of China! Your videos are really helping calm my nerves about going! Thanks!
Oh that sounds like an awesome app! I'm so, so glad my videos are helping with your upcoming transition :) If you want more advice on living in China, check out my China Travel Guide on my blog: bit.ly/chinatravelguide Happy travels!!
I LOVED China! It was awesome. I spent time in Dalian (3 weeks in July 2018 and 2 weeks in Oct 2018). People are soo nice! You will be completely safe.
take every single opportunity to learn mandarin in China. I've been learning mandarin for the past 4 years (outside china) and I doubt I could really make some dialogues with chinese themselves.
I only learned a little bit of Chinese, but am hoping to learn more in the future :)
thankyou so much! this has made me feel alot more comfortable about my exchange to china in october, about to binge watch all you're videos ahahah thankyou!
You are so welcome! I'm glad it helped you :)
I'll love to be with you!@@LaurenWithoutFear
omg! I need to write those down somewhere!!!
This is seriously perfect timing for you, huh? You can find a written version of this guide on my blog here: www.laviesanspeur.com/?p=980
I’m traveling to China this summer and I absolutely loved this video!
I’ve been trying to learn mandarin and this is the first video I’ve ever liked and has ever helped!
My flight is in a couple of hours! You're a lifesaver! Thank you!
omg so helpful even tho I'm gonna be in mainland for 2 days before i go down to HK... thank you!
I'm glad you found it helpful!!
Thanks for the lesson.. 😊
Thank you for informing me about pleco. I'm about to take Mandarin in school and I think it's a god send that I found your vlog with the suggestion. I'm sure I'll use it alot. Sheeyah sheeyah :)
Pleco is literally the best app for vocab and translating Chinese to English or vice-versa. You can also use the apps microphone button to say a phrase in Chinese which will translate each character back into English can be somewhat helpful if you can get the tones right.
brilliant! moving to China for a year so will be super useful
Awesome! Glad you found this :) Be sure to check out my China Travel Guide on my blog if you want more tips: bit.ly/chinatravelguide
When I was in Australia. Every time I went to SUBWAY for something,I was always like " This this this ..." n then I changed to " all except for those four". I just felt like not so confident until one day I just searched on google about them n literally spoke each one's names out. How did I feel? Pure relief!
Haha that's awesome!!!
Lauren!! I am going to Taiwain in March (apparently the languages of China & Taiwan are kind of comparable to American English/British English.. so hopefully I will be ok..) I have been studying this video for ages. I have been testing my pronouncation by speaking into Pleco and seeing if the correct word comes up! Great for practicing pronounciation. :)))
That was really handy thankyou
I just wanted to tell you I love this video!
Thank you, that was helpfull young lady, wish you all the best!
you are awesome! I'm going to Beijing in 30 days and a bit nervous. your vids help

Fun video. Also, I think your hair is really pretty.
I have the day off today, so I'm catching up on some old youtube videos..(not stalking your old videos or anything ha ha....)
Not currently going to China anytime soon but loved watching this video, I cracked up so much, your so entertaining! haha :'D
'hey girl hey'
Haha hey girl hey :)
I'm Chinese, I watched anyway haha!!
CHEATER! haha :)
@@LaurenWithoutFearI'm really enjoying your vids!
Isn’t nihao with a second tone
What website did you use to see the tones or how to pronounce things? Since I noticed you were referencing something. Because your descriptions were sooo helpful!
It's not easy at all to learn any languages in general. I did live with some people who were from different parts of the world. But whatever how long I lived with them,I usually just could say something that I was interested or it's sort of easy for me to learn. I think your Chinese pronunciation is quite good though. For me,I've been learning English for years n I'm still learning haha. I think you did a nice job 👍
Thank you!
really good channel, thank you! I'm going to China next week and am excited to try some of your video suggestions :)
lol did u hate it?
great video. I would have liked just leaving the words on the screen until you said new words, but that is what the pause button is for. :D
hey girl heyyyyyy
tai guay luh! omg the best one :D
Hey great video! How do you say "please" also :D do Chinese people use this word much?
Chinese people don't say please as often as we do in America, but if you want to say please you can add the word "qing" which is pronounced like "ching" at the end of your sentence. The tone if you want to get it right is like that dip down and back up :) Hope that helps!
Ah thank you!
Honestly, you should be teaching Chinese to English speaking folks. You're a natural. )))
Lol you said “hella” are you from the Bay Area of california
Hahaha you caught me. I'm not from the Bay, but lived in SF for 3 years and I'm going on 2 here in Hayward :)
