Luffy makes one piece 10 times better, he's the perfect protag for it
One piece is great because of its world building, I mean I liked it after the marine ford war, seriously they should have made that arc the first one and then fluffy gets stronger and picks his nakama it would have been the best starting.

To me Tsuna is my GOAT. My boi literally had to grow up and accept the fact that he couldn't run away from his role of running the Vongola. Him along with Yamamoto acting like it was a whole game to make sure him was in the right mindset is a duo I love. Eijun from Ace of diamonds is also a good Mc as he goes through a realistic growth in a sports anime similar to Ippo.

A really nice list, but imo I think Lelouch should be higher, and someone like Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist (either rendition) deserves to be up in the top 10 too. He really stepped out of the shounen protagonist mold back in the day and made it something fresh and raw again. Very well written.

I am very happy you talked about the Souma the way you did, most of the people downplay him cause he isn't a physical fighting protagonist but he has the awesome personality that goes unchecked.
I appreciate you tackling such a difficult subject bro. Building a top 10 anime list or mc list etc. out o your favourites is so hard. I can't get myself to stick to one for more than 5 minutes, and I'm fine with that. There are just too many incredible shows and protagonists.
Big Respect to you to include Soma in your top. For me he is easily in my top five. That being said I will always have Luffy in my number 1 , for me he is the best shonen protagonist all time. Well more than 1000 chapters help to develop your protagonist.

Luffy fs the goat, idk much about the other 2 but I'm liking Tanjiro. (On chapter 70 of demon slayer) His only "bloodline buff" has a good explanation, he isn't a cry cry waaaah loser character who gets stronger, and he has some really good dynamics with other characters. Also, he can think on the fly. Example: using 5th form on spider mother and (mugen train spoilers)

Not sure why talk no jutsu gets so much hate. It's something I admire from naruto, instead of using rute strength all the time. He tries to reason with them, and shows a lot about his character.

People have a problem with it mainly because its used too often. Some characters deserve a death, whether it be swift or not. Ill give an example from part 8.

For me my favorite protagonist has to be Mob from Mob psycho 100. Dude is literally given powers of the gods and still learning lessons. Not how to be a better psychic but a better human.

Johnny Joestar (amazing character arc one of the best shounen mc also.)
Akumetsu (Real underrated shounen mc imagine light but he said fuck the death note and said lets do it with an glock instead great mastermind like lelouch and Light)
Gabimaru (Great New gen mc)
Gon (dope shounen mc kid)
Mob/Shigeo (Amazing character arc s1 to s2. And s3 hype)
Manga Takemitchy (Goat especially black dragon arc and tenjiku and recent arc just pure goat)
HInata Shoyo (Great development from s1 to end of series or even s4 sheesh)
Kiritsugu Emiya (One of the best protag in anime real goat especially with his backstory and after F/Z DAMN THAT HITTED IN THE HEART)
Shirou Emiya (Hated a lot but a real dope one)
Koito yuu (Cute great character etc.)
Kaguya Shinomiya/Shirogane Miyku (Great especially later in the manga No spoilers.)

10) Yukuke Urameshi- Yu Yu Hakusho. Same reasons you said in the video. Also YYH > HxH
9) Ichigo Kurosaki- Bleach. I would put him above Naruto and even Luffy because his motivation isn’t to be the best [insert] ever or be a captain of the Gotei 13. He just wants to protect the people closest to him to make up for his weakness of not being able to protect his mom from the Grand Fisher. He has such great character development as the series continues, however, Naruto and Luffy have characteristics that stand out more than Ichigo.
8) Asta (Black Clover) and Tsuna (Hitman Reborn). They’re both tied because they’re kind of the same character, people who were seen as weak, losers, people who weren’t going to amount to anything. However, people stop sleeping on them when they show them how powerful they really are. Tsuna might be slightly higher because he’s more realistic than Asta, but both great characters.
7) Shinra Kusakabe- Fire Force. Since he has a child, Shinra always wanted to be a hero, but then the Evangelist turned his mom infernal, Sho manifested his power, and set his home on fire, but Shinra was blamed for it for all his life and was known as a devil. However, Shinra still tries to prove everyone wrong and that he can be a hero. I’ll get into manga spoilers, towards the end, the Evangelist started their Great Cataclysm and everyone in Fire Force sees Shinra as their savior from this Cataclysm, everyone begins to value Shinra as the hero they need.
6) Shoya Ishida- A Silent Voice. I’ve had a lot of mental health struggles in the past. I know how it feels to hurt people I care about, hating myself, and feeling alone. Shoya had those same issues, he’s like a spitting image of me.
5) Edward Elric- FMAB. Ed literally sacrificed so much, just to try to get his and his brother’s body back. He truly is one of the most selfless characters in anime.
4) Simon- Gurren Lagann. Simon is someone I’d like to be more of. I always struggled with self-confidence and believing in myself, just like Simon. Simon is just really inspirational, what can I say.
3) Naruto Uzumaki- Naruto Series. He’s the OG Asta and Deku. This man Naruto is so inspirational. Naruto was ostracized for his whole life, but some people still rooted for him, like Iruka and Jiraya. If it weren’t for them, he would’ve been an Obito or a Nagato. What makes him better than Ichigo is that he has the ability to try to make his enemies understand what they’re doing is wrong and see that they’re better ways to go about their goals; talk no jutsu. Gaara and Nagato are good examples of Naruto’s Talk No Jutsu at work. The Naruto series also added motivation for my running career, just like Naruto, I want to be the best runner at my school, but there people who’ve been running way longer than I have and are more talented than I am, but people won’t sleep on me anymore.
2) Luffy- One Piece. Same reasons you said in your video.
1) Lelouch- Code Geass. He’s Light Yagami, but so much better, he’s Itachi, but better. Lelouch wanted to overthrow the empire for the greater good, but the ways he went about where wrong. Also, he’s number 1 for the same reasons you said in your video. He’s just a good guy with good intentions, but went down the wrong path. Heck, it was to point where he sacrificed himself to persevere the world from going to hell.
Honorable mentions:
Ryuko Matoi- Kill La Kill. One of the most baddest female protagonists of all time. It’s like if Erza was the main character of her show (I said Erza because she’s a badass female character, but isn’t the main protagonist). Ryuko is rebellious and defies all the norms of women in anime. We need more characters like Ryuko.
Yuuji Itadori- JJK. Has potential to be too 5. Unlike most shounen protagonist, he’s a lot more realistic, and he’s very selfless, wholesome too. We just gotta see JJK finish. (I’ve heard manga spoilers but I gotta read them for myself).
Denji- Chainsaw Man. Animate his series first and he’ll be top 5.
Shinji Ikari- Neon Genesis Evangelion. Ik how it feels like to run away from problems and be reliant on other people to point where I can’t believe in myself and acknowledge myself for me. However, Shinji doesn’t really get to that point, and just gets even worse. I’m talking about both anime and movie Shinji and not anywhere beyond the first Evangelion movie.
Eren Yeager- AOT. He’s really been through it, his mom was eaten in front of him and he ate his dad. He was kidnapped because of the power he held and the basement. However, I just think Lelouch did a better job displaying the morally gray protagonist, and I don’t think Eren is better than anyone in the top 10.
Light Yagami- Death Note. He’s on here because I don’t know where to rank him, he’s genuinely top 10, I just don’t know where to put him. He’d probably tie with Shoya Ishida, Edward Elric, or Simon tho. But like I said with Eren, Lelouch did it better.

Kaneki Ken (manga version) deserves to be here somewhere , but Light, Eren, Lelouch, Edward, and Kaneki are for sure in mine. I would have to think more on the other Shounen protags, but they are all really good honestly. Yusule, Tsuna, and Ichigo are personal favs of mine.
Naruto is the best for me because he was hated by the entire village ever since he was an infant and didn't even know why. And he could've went the wrong path and get revenge against the village that hated him, but instead he was so inspiring that even within the first arc he got a bridge named after him and the support of that village. Although a lot of people think talk no justu is weak, the ability to change people's mindset stopped future catastrophe's. For example if Naruto simply beat Neji without words, regardless of finding out the truth about his father, his hatred could've drove him to get much stronger and kill the upper branch of the Hyuga clan. If Naruto hadn't talked to Gaara and just simply beat him, Gaara would've never changed and would of became a threat to the rest of Ninja world rather than an ally. He also inspired Tsunade to accept the role of Hokage, which helped to stabilize the village much faster and reduce the risk of danger. Even if Naruto simply beat Nagato nothing would've changed, all the people in the village who died would've remained dead including Kakashi. But thanks to him he stopped so many funerals, and if Kakashi died, the 4th Great Ninja War would've ended very differently. Everyone that Naruto comes into contact with changes for the better. He fought a war, and right after that was able to save Sasuke and all his plans by changing his mindset. Naruto just is the best

Dude, I wanna know so bad why Gintoki is considered as one of the best protagonists but I just CAN'T watch Gintama, I've been trying for more than 1 year, I've watched like 22 episodes and it still doesn't get interesting, I'm literally struggling to watch it, and I have a question, does it ever get better?
@@alexinio0535 gintama as most of long series it is difficult even very difficult to get into but if you want where it starts to pick up I would definitely say after the 1st serious arc after 50 or so episodes

Rob I only have one question for you. How do you do it? All of your videos are really just a treat, I have Shonen showdown in my top 10 RUclipsrs, you make fair debates and manage to bring some from both sides of an argument so mostly everyone can be happy with the result of your videos. You are also unbiased for the most part, I personally dont think you are but some people say you overscale luffy. And you are able to convey your arguments so smoothly that its pretty much impossible to missunderstand them. I can only think of a few other RUclipsrs with an ability like this. I can tell you put in work for your videos too, there's no way this video didn't take a bunch of research. And on top of that your opinion on most anime is something most people can agree on. How do you manage it?

Light yagami (Death note):He is one my favorite anime character and the best villain (behind johan and guts) Light totally break the rules of good guy bad guy where he is the mc but he is the bad guy which make us root for this villain.He was just evil and his character development by becoming even more evil throughout the series it what make this character even more.The best thing about light was his ingenious intellectual to develop the best criminal detective chase in anime the only bad thing light had was his overconfidence and arrogance which led to his fall
Luffy (One Piece):For the nostalgia and the impact he had on me he is one of favorites. Luffy is that typical shonen mc and still he is better written than any of them Nothing can match the charisma and the unpredictable epicness of one the most easily loved mc He is the definition of "the plot doesn't happen to him he happens to the plot"
Luffy is the character which oda transmit the theme of one piece which is freedom
Luffy want to find one piece not because he want the treasure fame or huge power but because that make him the pirate king the most free person in the world which is why I love him so much (please don't make aot jokes about this)
Guts(Berserk):The best mc in all of fiction.Guts its a perfect character. He is one of the biggest example of the struggle and suffering of a character. We follow his character development throughout his entire life.He is perfect fusion of baddas and tragic character,cold and caring character, a perfect strong phisically and fragile mentally of a character in fiction.

Denji from Chainsaw Man is definitely up there for me. The way he figures out the vulnerability of/his plan to win against the final villain (not saying the name to avoid spoilers) is heartbreaking. He’s surprisingly deep for a guy who turns into a devil with chainsaw blades for arms and a chainsaw for a head.

Saitama since he was one of the first anime I watched and I find him funny.
