I live in southern US. Alligators won’t bother you in the water. They usually only attack when your on the bank. I’ve swam in alligator water a lot, even seen them on the bank. No big deal. They’re actually pretty chill.

I live in Florida and I gotta say I look out more for Crocodiles!! They’re much more dangerous and sooo territorial! I’ve even heard zoo keepers on Reddit threads say alligators are so chill that they aren’t worried with them when feeding them but crocodiles they are 100% focused and careful! But always be careful where u swim in Florida cause you’re never alone, we also got snapping turtles and snakes too! I see movies of people swimming in lakes and stuff where the water is dark like nope I need clear water to see around me and the bottom like the beach or pool. We got huge pythons eating deer and alligators or die from trying to eat huge adult gators or other things like cows that they kill!

Our bus tour stopped at some falls in the northern territory on our way to Darwin & we were all desperate for a swim coz we were sweltering in the bus. There were signs warning about the possibility of crocks in the water (i guess they have to cover themselves) but it was clearly a place that a lot of people swam regularly. My mum tried to stop me going in and pointed out the signs but half the tour bus was already in and some of them were pretty poor swimmers, so they needed a life guard really. I shepherded 3 waves of swimmers back & forth to the falls and mum was livid with me when i finally got out 🤣

Alligators are more less comfortable in salt water than Crocodiles. One of the reason why the Chinese Alligator is such an isolated species.
Most Alligators found outside out of the SE USA are pets that were abandoned. Thought it’s entirely possible they may have swam up a river system in the summer months.
