I'd do a Dakota hole fire with this setup. The dual advantage is that if the wind picks up and blows into your shelter then the fire would be shielded from the wind and it would only take a few green logs to build an awning for the fire to shield from rain too.
I have an idea for a video. Unpredicted severe cold rain starts and it's getting worse. The temp is dropping quickly. This was NOT on your weather app. You have a large waterproof poncho on, covering your backpack but you have to stop short of your goal and camp. How do you get that poncho off without getting soaked and setting up an emergency "tent" until morning?
I just got a 10 x 12 tarp that has all the extra tie outs. That is a great setup. I was thinking when I recreate something like it I would like to protect the tarp above the fire. A simple and easy way is to tape some tinfoil to the corner that is exposed or set up a tripod and put tinfoil around the top. if you set up a ridgeline it would be super simple to make it into a super shelter with some clear plastic sheeting.
You are actually the first survival videos we have ever watched, and the best we’ve seen since then. We live in very cold upper Michigan, and the tarp setups are great for Spring, Summer and Fall. We enjoy your videos and watch them over and over. Thanks for the quality videos. You helped us get into survival and prepping! God bless!
I love how you started the fire with your knife and Ferro rod technique... seems much more easier and effective... I never thought of doing it that way!... Thanks!
this is a great simple and to the point instruction video. I'm looking for someone to show me a simple 1 man tarp shelter that I can have a fire to not only cook but to keep me warm in the sub degree winters of Wisconsin. I have seen a few but nothing that is as simple as I want it. I have used this shelter setup and a log fire wall and built up rocks in a U shape which helps a lot, that may be the best I can get. I'm checking out your other videos, im sure I will find a lot of useful info on all kinds of things. thanks for taking the time to teach others the craft of outdoor survival.
Nice setup, I will have to try this sometime. Only downside seems to be that if it is windy and rainy (like it is here a lot) you would need wind going only one direction... Thanks for the video, great stuff
If you used a Dakota fire hole it would be better I would think. Not knocking what you've done it just made my mind run a bit, I know that's what you always do for me, make me think. Thanks for what you do and show us. By the way I'm known as Snake also.
I often use the same set up for daytime. I just call it a box shelter. At night I drop the ridgeline 18-24" and pull out the sides and it makes a good shelter for two people. Regards JB. (South Coast UK)
I have that Aqua Quest Safari 10x10 camo tarp in my bug out bag and it's a really nice tarp. I've had it for about a year and a half and it's still going strong. I would like to try out the Defender version, I just went with the Safari to save on weight and bulk.
Aye Joey, I have the 10X10 Defender and it is seriously an exceptional tarp - and I'd suggest you get it if you deserve a gift to yourself!! It's heavy to hike with; over 5 LBS, if I my memory is correct. I'm about to purchase the 10X10 Safari for the exact reason you bought yours, but I'm supper happy I will have the Defender as well. It is a thick, tough, 4-season tarp, and can store in the trunk of the car. If you had to bug out it's the Defender you would insist on taking with you, if you could only take one or the other. These tarps are worth every penny.
The British army used to use bungees a lot for their basha shelters but I think they seem to be going more for jungle knots instead now from what I’ve heard.
I love your information but spotting you is half the fun. I noticed you said don’t use wood that throws sparks or embers, how do you know if the wood will?
Practice, though I'm not always right. Fatwood, heart of pine, yaupon, and well dried hardwood usually are winners. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Outstanding demonstration brotha very spot on I'm totally digging this shelter, do you own any small twig stoves?? This is where they SHINE the fire stays very small throws immense heat and gets full burn of wood, little to zero ash. Thanks for sharing stay strong&healthy safe&happy!!(=✌💚
My Amazon link has it. I need to check my site and make sure I have it listed...but either way its on Amazon. I go to the Aquaquest website to see which ones I like best.

In that area i can't do a Dakota fire pit... the ground is like stone. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I always carry a 6x6 foot piece of clear poly drop sheet to use on the open side to create a green house affect to warm up the inside
Excellent. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Dakota fir pit would be great, but sometimes the extra labor gets in the way, or the ground is too wet or hard. Thanks for the view and comment!
Wow, Snake, I had no idea you are 6-1/2 feet tall!
Another great vid, keep 'em coming brother!

He tied that tarp at five feet off the ground. I . .thought he must be a tall boy. No wonder he wanted the headroom John in Wilmer Texas
Very cool and smart shelter-system! Best regards!

So a square tarp warped into a half tent 😳what's not to like ? I just bought bungees and the setup is super fast 🤗
Thanks for watching and commenting!
it seems like if you wanted you could put a smaller reflective tarp or a mylar blanket at the back on the inside for extra heat
Definitely. Thanks for watching and commenting!
This is the first time I have ever considered using a tarp. Great video and explanation!

I like the set up, would rather use a canvas tarp though , heavier but more durable without having to worry about ambers
