かける is one of the strangest words in japanese... I sometimes think that when i finally have learned all of its meanings, i will reach enlightenment. Thank you for another great video!

I view かける with same dread a Japanese may feel about "get."

かける is something very weird and scary.
I have 4 "かける" on my anki deck and they mean something very different, I always found kind of weird but never question it, but weirdly enough none of them said something about being "half/in the middle of something".
The 4 on my deck mean: Hang, put on, bet stake, to burden someone and to make a call(of course with different kanji, but I usually use listening more than reading so I always get confused since I am not always reading what is being said.)
The only "middle" definition I have is 中(ちゅう).
Boy when you think you know you just don't really know.
I am wondering if my deck is wrong somehow... but either way I will add the definition you presented on this video.
Can't wait for the N3 be finally done so I can watch weekly/monthly just like I do with N4 and N5.
The thumbnail with the 13 sentinels girl is so cute, can't wait to finally being able to play this game in the future, got convinced after watching your video about the game.
    Great content as always

You're videos always come eerily on time, I really like the song 花束のかわりにメロディーを and it uses that grammar. I understood it in general but I thought, I hope マットさん will do a video on it... 😳😱 How do you know!!!?? lol, anyway, I'm looking forward to it.

@@GameGengo haha yeah don't break your head over it, When I translate from Punjabi to English, music is always the hardest because it's so idiomatic. You're doing awesome as is. Keep up the good work 👍🏼it's just nice to see your lessons pop up in the everyday Japanese media I try to consume..just keeps proving how helpful these videos are.

hahaha to cover EVERYTHING かける can do will certainly require its own video like ところ
Actually that's probably the next one I'll cover. But this right now is just the N3 usage :P

Loving this series! Thank you Matt! Question regarding ~かける and ~中 they both kinda mean in the middle of something? For example 飲み中 = in middle of drinking, 飲みかける = also kinda in middle of drinking?

As someone who’s watching this video because I don’t know the grammar I would say 中 is quite literally in the middle of drinking and かける implies that your in the middle of drinking and are not finished yet, maybe meaning you had to stop and do something else etc.. at least that’s my limited understanding of it

@@abrahamgamer8331 Yeah, that's about it. As someone who also just watched the video, best way to think of it is like that かける is that you were already in the act of it, while ~中 is like midpoint middle
