Adding Conjure Women to my “want to read” list. I’m iffy on historical fiction, but I like the review you gave and I’m a sucker for magical realism.
The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dawson is one of my favorite books I’ve read in 2023. It is set in a not to distant Florida ravaged by climate change and hurricanes. I really, REALLY liked it.

Conjure Women sounds amazing and I keep hearing good things about it! I just finished Cane River (an older book) and I feel like nothing could top just the level of research that she did to be able to write that. I also have In the Upper Country on my side table in my pile of books I’m currently reading but I haven’t been hooked in yet. Hope you do one for kids books too! I’ve read some good ones this year!

Age of Vice reminds me a bit of a book I loved this year. I think you would enjoy The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff! So good!!
Oh my goodness, Megan, so I just read Kairos, and I am originally from Austria, so German is my native tongue, and I just had to order it in its original version because it was so good and still sticks with me. So many reasons why that is. I heard about it on NPR, how did you come across it? Anyway, once I've read it in original language, maybe I'll understand historical references better and interpret the ending better, because I got confused. Don't want to spoil it for you, anyway, it's a book that keeps on giving and keeps getting better. I loved True Biz and have added Conjure Women to my TBR! A book I just finished and have been recommending to everyone is Yellowface by R.F. Huang-it's amazing and a great look inside the publishing world. There might be a connection to the Midwest for your reading map, but I'm not sure😁A book I wasn't to jazzed by was The Hacienda by Isabel Canas. I'd already read some other Mexican gothic books, so this one didn't hold up to those.🤷🏽♀Enjoy the rest of your summer!
