  • William Dalrymple, author and historian, wrote Return of a King, on the failure of military intervention in Afghanistan and how British invaders were humiliated and sent packing after the First Anglo-Afghan War.
As the Taliban returns to Kabul and the Americans are confronted with abject defeat after a 20-year war, the parallels with the present are stark. The author talks to Barkha Dutt

And now, after the Taliban takeup of Kabul, Pak has successfully put an end to India's role in Afg. It's a game of state interest. AFG was always a strategic depth for Pak and Pak in any way can not allow any country to have endangered the Pak interests in AFG.

The world was talking about how the Taliban was winning against the Ghani govt military forces without a fight, but did anyone consider that Ghani's govt might have been sabotaging itself from the inside? I wonder what message was being communicated in the administration of those places that fell without a fight. In India, no one blames the administration, it is the politicians that are blamed. No nation must make it's administration fall into such apathy like perhaps the Ghani administration was in.
The Taliban needed Pakistan to win Afghanistan, and I think it's doubtful that the Taliban can survive where it is without Pakistan in the future too. There could be truth in the perception that the leadership of the Taliban is not either close, or friendly with Pakistan, though, and vice versa. However, it is necessary for both the Taliban and Pakistan, to carry this relationship forward.

A country's head can't stop & stoop to media demands. This govt has ensured Leftist media get their news briefings & don't run the govt as was happening under MMS. If you fail to comprehend search Radia tapes, you will hear Barkha talking to Neera Radia. They were discussing which cabinet ministry should be given to which politician. It shows how weak was that govt. Now you decide whom you want to run the country, Lutyens or your elected representative.
